Countryfile star John Craven shares poignant final wish
Countryfile presenter John Craven has been a firm favourite on the BBC show since 1989 and has now shared his final wish. John Craven, the much-loved presenter of Countryfile, has made a touching revelation about his final wishes and his deep affection for a particular spot in Yorkshire. The BBC stalwart, who recently issued an apology on the long-running show, took viewers on a tour of some of Yorkshire's most beloved spots and disclosed his desire to have his ashes scattered at one of these locations. In Sunday's episode (17 August), John delved into the rich culture of Knaresborough, with its ancient castles, cliffs, and enigmatic caves, often referred to as a "hidden gem". As the 84-year-old explored the River Nidd and discussed its rich history, he also showcased his extensive knowledge of the county and its environs. The presenter, who recently marked 30 years fronting the documentary series, had previously expressed his wish to have his ashes scattered at his favourite Yorkshire location, reports the Express. He confessed: "Still one of my favourite places in the world is Wharfedale and Otley Chevin, where I used to cycle with my mates. "I love the coast too, especially Whitby, though we had family holidays in Bridlington because I suspect it was a bit cheaper. "I'd like to come home and have my ashes scattered in Yorkshire, maybe on the top of Otley Chevin," he told The Yorkshire Post back in 2019. Despite not having lived in the county since his twenties, John still has family there and makes regular visits to Yorkshire. In the most recent Countryfile programme, John spoke with fellow specialists and examined age-old traditions, from the historic Holgate windmill to a cutting-edge, solar-powered micro-distillery converting heritage grains into environmentally-friendly spirits. Additionally, he explored the programme's archives to revisit conventional techniques and cherished crafts that have formed the backbone of countryside living. In the Countryfile magazine, the host expressed his regret at failing to obtain a coastal property. "All my life I've dreamt of a home by the seashore but somehow have never managed to achieve it," he revealed. Instead of dwelling beside the coast, he lives more than an hour's drive from his nearest beach in Oxfordshire, and settles for his own garden space when he cannot make the trip. John added: "Confession time: sometimes I sit in my garden, play recordings of the sea and pretend I'm there, doing just that." With no indication of stepping down, the host is also widely recognised for presenting the children's news show Newsround for 17 years from 1972. After his exit in 1989, John joined Countryfile that same year and has stayed a beloved fixture on the show ever since.

Prince Harry, Prince William's Cousin Found Dead With "Firearm Nearby": Report
Rosie Roche, a distant cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, was found dead at her family's Norton, Wiltshire home with a "firearm nearby" on July 14, according to reports. Ms Roche, 20, was the granddaughter of Princess Diana's uncle and a second-year English literature student at Durham University. She was preparing for a trip with friends when her mother and sister found her body at the family home, PEOPLE reported. A representative for Durham University said that she "will be sorely missed." A Wiltshire and Swindon coroner has opened an investigation, deeming the death "non-suspicious" and noting no indications of "third-party involvement." The subsequent session of the inquest is set for October 25. On July 19, The Yorkshire Post published an obituary for Ms Roche. "Darling daughter of Hugh and Pippa, wonderful sister to Archie and Agatha, granddaughter to Derek and Rae Long," it read. There will be a private family funeral for her, followed by a memorial service. In February 2024, Thomas Kingston, the husband of Lady Gabriella Kingston, was found dead at his parents' residence in a Cotswolds village in England with a gunshot wound to the head. He was 45 and was once romantically linked to Pippa Middleton, the sister of Kate Middleton. Kingston's death was characterised as "impulsive" and "unexpected" during a pre-inquest examination, per the BBC. According to an earlier statement from a coroner's office spokesperson, Kingston died due to a severe head injury. Officially, his death was determined to be a suicide. Lady Gabriella, 43, said in her heartbreaking witness testimony that she believed her late husband's "impulsive action" was probably caused by the medication he was receiving in the weeks before he died. Officials stressed they were unrelated and that no such connection should be drawn.

Resident faces enormous penalty after reckless tree-clearing operation: 'This case ... should act as a warning'
When it comes to standing up for our environment, sometimes we have to enforce stiff penalties to help living organisms that can't protect themselves. One man found that out the hard way after he violated a tree preservation order put in place to safeguard ancient woodlands. As The Yorkshire Post reported, the incident took place near Sheffield, England. Saeed Nazir, a local to Sheffield, was fined over £65,000 (around $84,000) for cutting down around 30 trees that were located in a protected area. According to authorities, Nazir had cut down the trees to make room to house his sheep and goats. He claims he was unaware of the tree preservation order. Councillor Ben Maskell, chair of the Sheffield Council's transport, regeneration, and climate police committee, referred to the pricey fine as an excellent deterrent. "This case, and the size of the fine, should act as a warning," Maskell said, per The Yorkshire Post. "We will take action against anyone who breaches a Tree Preservation Order." In the UK, Tree Preservation Orders are put in place to protect specific trees or groups of trees from deliberate damage and destruction, per the government website. This can be done to improve air quality, protect wildlife habitats, or maintain the sanctity of ancient woodlands. Trees can act as silent partners in the fight against a warming climate, as the Nature Conservancy detailed. Trees absorb carbon dioxide that is emitted in surrounding areas, making our air easier to breathe and trapping less heat in the atmosphere. Nathan Edwards, chair of Sheffield Street Tree Partnership, offered some additional insight into what trees mean to our environment. "As a Street Tree Partnership we understand the importance of street trees to connect green spaces, including woodlands, both for nature recovery and climate resilience, but not if those spaces have been damaged or destroyed," Edwards said, per The Post. "As such we welcome and support the council's action against the destruction of ancient woodland and hope that it serves as a reminder to others that we will collectively defend our natural heritage."
