Ex-Premier League referee David Coote banned for 8 weeks over Klopp rant

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed an eight-week suspension and directed to complete a face-to-face education programme after making offensive remarks about ex-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in a private video that was later widely shared on social media. The incident, which led to his dismissal, was reviewed by an independent regulatory commission that announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday. Coote accepted the Football Association's charge of misconduct for using abusive and insulting language in a video reportedly recorded around July 2020. The footage, believed to have been taken via a mobile phone, showed Coote sharing personal opinions about Liverpool FC and Klopp in a conversation with an unidentified individual. Coote faces consequences for his comments In the video, Coote referred to Liverpool with an expletive and used a derogatory term to describe Klopp, calling the German manager 'arrogant' and accusing him of previously alleging that Coote had lied during a post-match exchange. The FA deemed the remarks an "aggravated breach" of its rules, citing the inclusion of references, explicit or implied, to nationality. Coote was initially suspended, and after a formal investigation, he was terminated from his position in December by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who stated his continued role was 'untenable.' In addition to this case, Coote had previously faced scrutiny following a report by The Sun, which claimed he discussed issuing a yellow card with a fan during a match. Coote denied the allegations, and the FA confirmed in June that no charges would be filed regarding that incident. Meanwhile, UEFA has also opened an inquiry into Coote after a separate video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showed him using cocaine during this year's European Championship.

Woman Smokes On Istanbul-Cyprus Flight, Threatens To ‘Blow' It Up

The woman blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. A shocking incident on a flight has been going viral on the Internet, where a female passenger was seen smoking inside the cabin. The incident took place on a flight from Istanbul to Cyprus. The woman, dressed in a blue burqa and sunglasses, was seen sitting by the window when she began smoking a cigarette inside the plane. She blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. As seen in the clip, the woman, who was sitting alone in her row, takes a puff and pulls down her burqa to exhale the smoke discreetly into the cabin air. However, the smell gave her away. A man, sitting on the seat in front of her, quickly looked back at her to check if she was really smoking. He then removed the seat cover to prevent any mishap. The cabin crew, too, acted swiftly and snatched the cigarette from her hand. Things took a turn for the worse as the woman then took out a lighter and tried to set the cover of the seat on fire. She did not stop there. The woman then took out a piece of white cloth and tried to light that as well. But the crew acted immediately and tried to take away her lighter, which she resisted. Another crew member reached her seat with a bottle of water, pouring it over the flame to extinguish it. The video shared by The Sun on Monday, August 11, on X has garnered over 2.5 million views. People have expressed concerns over violations of such safety regulations, while a section slammed her for her actions. Meanwhile, a few other users pointed out that the incident happened years ago and isn't a recent one. Reportedly, the bizarre incident took place in 2019. According to several media reports, the original video was posted on X, where the woman on the plane going from Istanbul to Northern Cyprus threatened to 'blow up" the aircraft as it was taxiing at the Istanbul airport. She shouted, 'I am an FETO member, and I will blow up the aircraft." The woman was later detained by the authorities. She was allegedly from the Gülen organisation, which has been classified by Turkiye as a terrorist organisation under the names Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and Parallel State Structure (PDY). FETO was behind a failed coup in the country in 2016. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 16:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
