The most shocking Simpsons episode ever aired 30 years ago today
The Simpsons is renowned for referencing some of the most famous films and TV shows of all time. From re-creating Springfield's version of The Sopranos to The Shining and Thelma and Louise, viewers have been treated to a vast array of tasteful rip-offs. But delving further into the cannon of Simpsons episodes and moving past the spooky Halloween storylines, the show's writers created one of the most shocking episodes ever 30 years ago today. Within the format of a 'whoddunit' mystery, Who Shot Mr Burns has continued to intrigue audiences still today. After airing on May 21, 1995, the two-part episode was the final in series six of the animated show. The first part began with Mr Burns stealing oil after it was found in Springfield Elementary School, bringing misery to the citizens. However, at the end, Mr Burns is shot by an unidentified assailant. In part two, Springfield's police try to find out who shot him, with the main suspects being Waylon Smithers and Homer Simpson. Written by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, the amazing twist (spoiler alert) was that Maggie Simpson shot Mr Burns. Taking to Reddit to commemorate the episode's 30th anniversary, fans still could not believe who was the killer. Writing on a discussion page for the episode, TheCozyHorizon wrote: 'This was so epic for the time… a murder mystery in real time of a family everyone watched.' Theghostwhorocks added: 'The hype was real. Everyone was talking about it in the summer leading up to the reveal.' Malaclypse also said: 'There is a tell in part one. When Burns turns up to the town meeting, he says 'You all talk big, but who here has the guts to stop me?' 'The camera pans around the crowd, and everyone's eyes look away – except Maggie, who is at the bottom of the screen, staring daggers.' DJWGibson responded to this comment, saying: 'They did a lot of set-up and tells. It's quite impressive.' After the episode was put on Disney Plus, Oakley – who wrote the episode – said himself that it was 'one of the best episodes to watch there'. This comes after the replacement for a long-running Simpsons character was announced last week. In 1989, Pamela Hayden joined the American animated series, voicing characters including Milhouse Van Houten, Jimbo Jones and Rod Flanders. More Trending But in November 2024, after appearing in more than 700 episodes over 35 years, the 71-year-old revealed she was leaving the show. 'The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons?……not easily,' she shared in a statement. Six months on, it's now been revealed who will be replacing Hayden as Milhouse, best known for being Bart Simpson's best friend. View More » The Simpsons is streaming on Disney Plus. Got a story? The much-admired film is presently available on Channel 4 and promises to touch your heart in just a little over an hour. The cherished British actress, known for her roles in The White Lotus and Sex Education, recently popped into the Criterion Closet to chat about some of her most treasured films. She highlighted Céline Sciamma's touching work on the themes of youth and bereavement, Petite Maman, labelling it as a 'heartbreaking' film that's a must-see. Speaking about the celebrated French creation from 2021, she referred to it as "the sweetest, most haunting, beautiful film and it just tears me apart. "It's just mums, mums. Anything about mums gets me right in the ticker. I love my mum, I've got her name tattooed on my arm. "And I also love [Sciamma's] Portrait of a Lady on Fire, so I love all of her movies, so she's just one of my faves." For those needing more persuasion, cinephiles have shared glowing five-star feedback supporting Wood's enthusiasm for Petite Maman. Very poignant. I wanted more!" Meanwhile, a fan on Letterboxd raved: "What Céline Sciamma achieves in a mere 72 minutes is dumbfounding." Petite Maman is available to stream on Channel 4.

Susan Sarandon's daughter Eva Amurri reveals why she was 'scared' of going for a boob job
Eva Amurri was "scared of the judgement" that would come with getting a boob job. The 40-year-old blogger - who is the daughter of Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon and her former partner Franco Amurri - feels "amazing" after having a breast reduction, but admitted that it took her years before she plucked up the courage to actually go under the knife. She told PageSix: "Oh my God, I'm so happy. I feel like they've never looked this good in my entire life — even when I was 18. "It's so freeing and amazing to feel so comfortable in my own skin, to really look at myself and see myself proportional for the first. "I wanted it for 20 years but because I was scared of judgement, I gaslit myself into thinking I didn't have to feel totally comfortable in my body." But the 'Middle of Nowhere' star - who has Marlowe, 10, as well as sons Major, eight, and five-year-old Mateo with her ex-husband Kyle Martino - celebrated her milestone 40th birthday in April, and as she prepared to marry Ian Hock last year, she decided that she "deserved" to look the way she wanted. She said: "I turned 40 last month. And I thought to myself… You know, in the months leading up to my wedding, you know what? I'm turning 40 next year. I deserve this. I deserve the thing that I've been wanting to do for a long time." Her comments come just days after 'Thelma and Louise' star Susan - who also has Jack, 35, and 32-year-old Miles with Tim Robbins - recalled "dragging her kids all over the place" at the height of her career and while some of it might have been "awkward" at the time, she knows that they appreciate it all now. When asked what sort of legacy she wants to leave behind for her children, she told 'Entertainment Tonight': "That makes me cry because I can't think about leaving them but one of the things about being in this business and dragging your kids all over with you is that they're very flexible, and they're not afraid of other cultures. "Their bubble has been very big and sometimes it was a little awkward because there was no picking up at school or whatever but at the end of the day, they look back at it now and they're grateful for it."
