Heinz axes classic sauce from UK supermarkets and replaces with rebrand

Launched on May 6, Heinz's newest condiment, called Fish & Chips sauce, replaces the iconic and beloved Tartare sauce, discontinued in 2022 - and it's finger-licking good. Heinz, one of the UK's most popular beloved food brands and condiments, is diving back into the supermarket middle aisle to bring a fresh take on a traditional favourite - remember the Tartare Sauce? Famous brand Heinz takes the lead when it comes to sauces, and its newest condiment is a revamped version of the traditional tartare sauce - and it's aimed to be the best condiment for a cheeky Fish and Chips on a Friday. ‌ With a literal name of Fish & Chips Sauce, also known as 'Tartare 2.0', the ingredients include gherkins, dill, salt, parsley and mustard. While the bottle wears the 'Fish & Chips Sauce' label, the ingredients are listed in a style that's similar to the classic tartare sauce. On the packaging, Heinz has also listed it as 'Tartare Sauce', bringing back the nostalgia. ‌ The Tartare sauce has been a classic to seafood dishes like the fish and chips, and Heinz has described the new condiment as 'fresh and herby' which was 'posed to become Britain's new go-to pairing for fish dinners - and, of course, the nation's beloved dish, fish & chips.' In a statement about the launch, Heinz added: 'If tartare is the OG fish condiment, then think of Heinz Fish & Chips sauce as Tartare 2.0 – 2025's hot new upgrade… Love tartare? You'll be obsessed. Never tried it? Consider this your tasty gateway to next-level fish & chips.' Heinz's Tartare Sauce got removed from supermarket shelves in 2022. However, it's still available in some restaurants and online. The new Fish & Chips Sauce sells at £3.40 for a 400g bottle, promising to deliver the same good old flavour with a modern twist. Thiago Rapp, director of taste elevation at Heinz, said: "At Heinz, we're always exploring bold and exciting flavours, inspired by the latest food trends and what people across the nation are really craving." "We want to give fans endless flavour possibilities and unexpected pairings that elevate every bite. And when it comes to British classics, nothing quite compares to fish and chips. It's a national treasure, whether enjoyed as a seaside staple, a proper chippy tea on a Friday, or a comforting midweek meal." He concluded: ''We've created a sauce that pays homage to this beloved British dish, crafted to be the perfect companion for every fish-filled occasion.' Introducing the new Fish & Chips sauce, Heinz isn't just bringing back a classic condiment. Whether you're a long-time tartare sauce fan or just curious to try something new, this could be the best condiment sauce for your Friday meals. This follows recent reports from Which? revealing that shoppers prefer supermarket own-brand bargains over big-brand favourites. In Heinz's case, it was revealed that the best ketchup was Lidl 's Batts Tomato Ketchup.

Heinz fans baffled as sauce that disappeared is given ‘outrageous' replacement

When you think of Heinz, you probably think of tomato ketchup and baked beans, but there's another condiment that fans have always loved. The brand's Tartare Sauce disappeared from supermarket shelves in the UK in 2022, and has only been available in certain restaurants and locations ever since. But this week, those who've been missing being able to buy the product from their local shop were treated to what the brand has dubbed 'Tartare Sauce 2.0'. The new condiment is known as Fish & Chips Sauce and is similar to the OG classic but has a slightly different recipe. Tartare sauce is traditionally made using mayonnaise, chopped pickles, lemon juice, tarragon and dill. While the new Fish & Chips Sauce blends gherkins, onions and herbs like parsley and dill. It's said to be a 'creamier' and 'herbier' condiment than tangy tartare sauce, with Heinz hopeful the 'hot new upgrade' is going to be a go-to pairing for fish dinners, taking fish and chips in particular to the 'next level'. Thiago Rapp, director of taste elevation at Heinz said: 'At Heinz, we're always exploring bold and exciting flavours, inspired by the latest food trends and what people across the nation are really craving. 'We want to give fans endless flavour possibilities and unexpected pairings that elevate every bite. And when it comes to British classics, nothing quite compares to fish and chips. It's a national treasure, whether enjoyed as a seaside staple, a proper chippy tea on a Friday, or a comforting midweek meal. 'We've created a sauce that pays homage to this beloved British dish, crafted to be the perfect companion for every fish-filled occasion.' A number of foodies can't wait to get their hands on a bottle of the stuff, with @ on Instagram branding it a 'saucy upgrade' and adding: 'That fish & chip tea just levelled up thanks to Heinz!' Similarly @hamiltonbeachuk claimed it's 'revolutionary' and @ said: 'Ooooft! Hello!!!!' But others were confused and upset over the changes to the OG product. On Facebook, many shared their thoughts with Martin Buckle branding it 'outrageous'. He wrote: 'This is outrageous dumbing down of an elite condiment. If people are to stupid to know what Tartare Sauce is for then they deserve to suffer sauceless.' Sally Perry was baffled by the new sauce, saying: 'Surely 'fish and chips sauce' is either tartare sauce or good old fashioned vinegar!' And Tom Walvin asked: 'WTF is fish and chips sauce?' Mark Long too was 'confused' commenting: 'What are they trying to sell us now that will sit on the table, 'Hey I've got fish and chip sauce'. Then it goes up in price lol, the mind boggles lol.' 'If only there was a sauce previously to serve with fish and chips,' Jim Lunn joked. Heinz hasn't missed these comments and the mixed reactions have actually prompted them to make a rather interesting decision about the new product. More Trending The brand announced they'd be 'handing the reigns' over to customers to decide if the name of Fish & Chips Sauce should stay as it is or be changed to Tartare Sauce. They said: 'Fish and Chips Sauce = a creamy, herby sauce for the beloved fish and chips. But everyone thinks it's Tartare… so we're handing you the reigns. Taste it and let us know your thoughts in the comments, should we make a name change here? Tell us and we'll change it… maybe.' Heinz 'upgrades' classic sauce as shoppers brand the move 'revolutionary'

Take a classic British dish to the next level with this brand new sauce Fish and chips is a staple dish across the UK. Whether it be by the seaside or a Friday night takeaway, it's a go-to order that has become synonymous with British cuisine. It's also quite versatile, as it pairs well with virtually any condiment, with some loyalists preferring ketchup, while others tend to just stick to salt and vinegar. However, many will know that the OG is Tartare sauce. ‌ Fans of the classic sauce will be pleased to hear that there is a brand new bottle on the market, as this week Heinz unveiled its Fish and Chips Sauce that they have branded as "Tartare 2.0." ‌ The beloved food manufacturer often cooks up an assortment of unique-flavoured sauces for fans to try out, with its latest offering already going down quite a treat with fans on social media who have branded it as "revolutionary." Hailed by Heinz as the "new companion for fish and chips", its herby and creamy sauce combines a few similar ingredients to the OG condiment such as gherkins, parsley, and dill. Those who are keen to give Heinz's Fish and Chips Sauce a try out the next time they order the staple dish will be able to find a 400ml bottle for £3.40 at Tesco, or on the firm's website for just £2.90. Based on the product description on the Heinz website, the sauce isn't just perfect for pairing with fish and chips, as it can bring a "refreshing twist to any dish". This includes a dip for fries, or for adding a herby flavour to vegetables and potato salad. ‌ After announcing the sauce on Instagram earlier this week, fans were quick to share their positive thoughts, as one responded with: "Now this is revolutionary!" A second Heinz fan wrote: "Ooooft! Hello!!!!" While someone else said: "Wow! its amazing!" ‌ A few shoppers on Facebook were a little more sceptical, as they thought the rebrand was just the exact same sauce but in a different bottle. One such user wrote: "It's Tartare Sauce for god sake." However, it is worth mentioning that, despite some comments, the Heinz Fish and Chips sauce is slightly different, as it does not contain capers which is one of the key ingredients in tartare sauce. The firm also responded to a customer saying it "added herbs and onions." ‌ Thiago Rapp, Director of Taste Elevation at Heinz said: "At Heinz, we're always exploring bold and exciting flavours, inspired by the latest food trends and what people across the nation are really craving. "We want to give fans endless flavour possibilities and unexpected pairings that elevate every bite. And when it comes to British classics, nothing quite compares to fish and chips. ‌ "It's a national treasure, whether enjoyed as a seaside staple, a proper chippy tea on a Friday, or a comforting midweek meal. We've created a sauce that pays homage to this beloved British dish, crafted to be the perfect companion for every fish-filled occasion." The Heinz Fish and Chips sauce (400ml) is available to buy for £3.40 at Tesco and £2.90 on the Heinz website.
