Ken Hinkley slumps to unwanted record as Adelaide romp to biggest Showdown win in history
Adelaide's Riley Thilthorpe has dominated a record 98-point belting of arch foe Port Adelaide which lifts the Crows to top spot on the AFL ladder. Thilthorpe booted three goals in a 20.13 (133) to 5.5 (35) victory on a sodden Saturday night at Adelaide Oval. The margin was the biggest in Showdown history and consigns departing Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley to an unwanted record in his final season. He cut a dejected figure as he walked off the field following the post-match presentations. The long-time coach now has four matches remaining before he bows out. The Crows will sleep on top of the ladder, though Collingwood will likely re-take pole position on Sunday with a win over Richmond. Adelaide will finish the round no lower than second after logging five consecutive victories for the first time under sixth-year coach Matthew Nicks. The sole blemish on Saturday night was a hamstring injury to Max Michalanney, who was substituted in the third quarter. The 201cm-tall Thilthorpe defied the heavy rain with his influential 19-disposal display featuring six clearances, and veteran Taylor Walker and Ben Keays booted three goals each. Adelaide's Jake Soligo (35 disposals) and Sam Berry (20 touches) scored two goals each. On-baller James Peatling (26, one goal) and captain and 150-gamer Jordan Dawson (21, one goal) were also prominent, while Mark Keane and Josh Worrell ruled in defence. The Power slumped to an 8-11 win-loss record and added another player to their lengthy injury list with Lachie Jones substituted because of a corked thigh. Port vice-captain Zak Butters (34 touches), Ollie Wines (25) and skipper Connor Rozee (22) battled against the tide while Jed McEntee kicked two goals. The match began bizarrely when Port's Miles Bergman roved the first bounce and launched a 50 metre kick - the wrong way. Adelaide's Darcy Fogarty marked the Bergman blunder and missed the set shot, but his side enjoyed early control. The Crows created an ominous 3.6 to 0.1 lead before Port hit back with three consecutive majors of their own - a stunning McEntee shot from a boundary line reduced their deficit to five points at quarter-time. Adelaide then produced a game-breaking burst, scoring four goals to none in the second stanza as Thilthorpe took control. The big Crow scored with an audacious 50m left-footer on the run as Adelaide crafted a 29-point half-time advantage, 7.8 to 3.3. Thilthorpe had 14 disposals, his eye-catching goal and six clearances for the half and extended his influence with the opening goal of the third quarter. The strike was the first of five goals to Port's two for the term as Adelaide led by a whopping 50 points at three quarter-time, 12.11 to 5.3. And Thilthorpe again took centre stage with the initial goal of a last term when Adelaide piled on eight goals to nil to cruise to victory and a 30-28 overall record against Port.

Thilthorpe shines as Crows score key win over Bulldogs
Riley Thilthorpe's career-best six goals have spearheaded a crucial 11-point AFL win for Adelaide over the Western Bulldogs. The 16.13 (109) to 15.8 (98) win on Saturday at Marvel Stadium consolidated the Crows' top-four berth with six rounds left and leaves the Bulldogs in danger of dropping out of the AFL's top eight. Thilthorpe, an imposing figure in the Adelaide attack with his bushy beard, took nine marks. It is Adelaide's third straight win at Marvel Stadium as they zero in on their first finals appearance since the disastrous 2017 grand final loss to Richmond. Worryingly for the Bulldogs, all their seven losses this season have been against finals contenders, and Saturday represented a significant test that they failed. They didn't give up, kicking five goals to two in the last term, but they fell too far behind when the Crows held a game-high lead of 32 points early in the final quarter. Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli was mighty with a game-high 37 possessions, and his counterpart Jordan Dawson also was outstanding in the midfield, while Dogs key forward Aaron Naughton kicked five goals. The first half was a tale of key forwards - Naughton kicked all of the Bulldogs' three goals in the first term and added his fourth in the second. Then Thilthorpe made life tough for the Bulldogs defence with four goals in the second quarter. Adelaide defender Jordon Butts had kept Bulldogs key forward Sam Darcy goal-less, but the Crow suffered a chest injury in the second term and ended up in hospital for tests. The Crows were left a man down in the third term when Brayden Cook, recalled for this game, had a clash of heads with Rory Lobb as they went for the ball. Cook immediately left the game with concussion, but Lobb was able to continue. There was no love lost between Naughton and his opponent, combative Irishman Mark Keane. When Naughton kicked his fifth from a free kick off the ball in the third term, he immediately went over to Keane, which sparked a melee. The Crows slowly pulled clear of the Bulldogs, leading by 19 at the main break, then 27 points at the final change.

Blues suffer double injury blow, Magpie skipper back
Carlton will be without stars Jack Silvagni and Zac Williams for their AFL clash with Adelaide, while Collingwood will welcome back captain Darcy Moore against Geelong. Silvagni underwent surgery after fracturing his hand in an exchange with Patrick Dangerfield in the first quarter of the Blues' round-seven win over the Cats. It is hoped the defender will spend just one week on the sidelines, but he could miss two games. Flat that both of the boys won't be out there this weekend, but looking forward to seeing them back out there real soon 🙌And a massive shoutout to SOS, who played through the pain for four quarters to perform a crucial role for the team in a big Navy Blue win 💙 — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) April 29, 2025 Blues forward Williams has been ruled out for two weeks with a calf strain. He suffered the injury after kicking a goal in the first quarter against Geelong. Moore returns for the Magpies after vertigo symptoms related to an inner-ear issue ruled him out of last week's Anzac Day win over Essendon. He is available for selection, while teammate Lachie Schultz faces a test following a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Adelaide are set to regain forward Riley Thilthorpe against Carlton, but they have lost defender Nick Murray for at least four weeks to knee surgery. Thilthorpe has been cleared to play in Saturday's match after seemingly suffering a compound finger fracture in their 18-point loss to Fremantle on Friday. His bone had pierced the skin, but the Crows confirmed on Tuesday that Thilthorpe had suffered a minor fracture. Thilthorpe is expected to be joined in the forward line by Darcy Fogarty (shoulder), while Murray will require an arthroscopy on his troublesome knee. Murray has continued to experience discomfort after jarring his knee at training earlier in the season, with scans proving inconclusive. The defender could spend four to six weeks recovering after the surgery. Luckless Sydney forward Logan McDonald could also go under the knife after suffering a stress fracture in his fibula, having already recovered from ankle surgery. Swans defender Sam Wicks (calf) is in the frame to play in the Sydney derby, but skipper Callum Mills (foot) remains a week-to-week assessment as the club waits on scans regarding Ben Paton's calf strain. Fremantle ruck Luke Jackson (hamstring), St Kilda's Mattaes Phillipou (leg), North Melbourne defenders Zac Fisher (hamstring) and Matt Whitlock (ankle), and Melbourne duo Jake Melksham (leg) and Daniel Turner (concussion) are all available for selection. Hawthorn have lost defenders Karl Amon and Jack Scrimshaw to concussion, while Essendon pair Matt Gueli (hamstring) and Nik Cox (calf) will make their return to football via the VFL.

Brayshaw, Serong star as Dockers beat Crows in Perth
Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong have put on a midfield masterclass to lead Fremantle to an 18-point Anzac day victory over Adelaide at Optus Stadium. Brayshaw racked up 37 disposals, six clearances and 522m gained while Serong tallied 32 possessions and 10 clearances in Friday night's match as Fremantle posted a 12.13 (85) to 9.13 (67) win. A bumper crowd of 53,048 turned up for Fremantle's annual Len Hall Tribute Game, with Brayshaw winning the inaugural Arthur Leggett Medal as best afield. Dockers coach Justin Longmuir questioned his team's toughness in the wake of last week's shock 10-point loss to Melbourne. But there was no doubting Fremantle's intent against the Crows, with players regularly putting themselves in harm's way for the good of the team. Adelaide kicked 4.5 to 0.5 in the last quarter to add respectability to the scoreboard, but it was Fremantle who were the deserved winners. The result improved Fremantle's record to 4-3. Adelaide are also 4-3, but have now lost three of their past four matches. Crows forward Riley Thilthorpe managed to kick three goals despite suffering a major injury scare in the third quarter. Thilthorpe headed to the rooms in pain after damaging an already-strapped finger on his left hand while attempting a mark. The 22-year-old was able to return to the field for the final quarter, but it remains to be seen if there are any lingering effects from the injury. Adelaide's Mitchell Hinge could be in trouble for his off-the-ball hit on Brayshaw during a blood rule pause in the second quarter. Josh Treacy kicked two goals and had 444m gained to lead Fremantle's attack, with Jye Amiss, Oscar McDonald and Michael Frederick also kicking two goals apiece. Treacy was an imposing force in the opening quarter, kicking one goal and playing a hand in two others as Fremantle entered the quarter-time break with a 38-13 lead. The Dockers dominated the inside 50m count 17-7 for the term, with Hayden Young, Shai Bolton and Brayshaw all getting busy. Adelaide's best highlight for the quarter came when Izak Rankine grabbed a bobbling ball from the pack and threw it onto his boot for a special checkside goal. The Dockers are looking unstoppable!#AFLFreoCrows AFL (@AFL) April 25, 2025 Alarm bells were ringing for Adelaide when Amiss and Treacy kicked goals early in the second quarter from free kicks to stretch the lead to 36 points. By that stage, the free kick count read 15-7 in favour of Fremantle, and Adelaide players looked clearly frustrated. Josh Rachele, in his first game back from three broken ribs, halted Fremantle's momentum with a goal against the run of play. And when Thilthorpe kicked two goals from marks to make it three in a row for the Crows, the margin was back to 20 points by half-time. Adelaide fluffed a series of golden chances in the third quarter, and it came back to haunt them as Fremantle kicked 4.2 to 0.4 for the term. Emerging Fremantle star Murphy Reid provided the main highlighted, outsprinting his opponent before dribbling the ball through for a goal with the outside of his right boot. The Dockers turned for home with a 42-point lead, and it proved too much to overturn despite Adelaide making a late push and Fremantle missing a host of good chances.
