580 tonnes of waste collected during Chithirai festival events
Madurai: Madurai corporation has collected a total of 581 metric tonnes of waste generated during the major events of the ongoing Chithirai to corporation officials, the highest volume of waste — 280 metric tonnes — was cleared following the Vaigai river entry of Lord Kallazhagar on Monday. The event drew lakhs of devotees to the riverbanks, creating a massive influx of garbage including food waste, plastic bottles, slippers and other the corporation removed 175 metric tonnes of waste following the Thirukalyanam (celestial wedding) and temple car festival. Another 126 metric tonnes were cleared after the Edhir Sevai event, when Lord Kallazhagar ceremonially entered support the intensive clean-up efforts, corporation deployed more than 300 additional sanitary workers and 109 vehicle drivers to the festival zones. Temporary garbage bins were placed at key congregation points and waste was cleared in multiple shifts to ensure cleanliness and from sanitation, the civic body took several public health measures. A total of 34 medical camps were set up across the city to provide first aid and respond to health emergencies. Sixteen ambulances were strategically stationed near crowd hotspots, especially along Alagarkovil Road and near the Vaigai riverbanks. Drinking water tanks were also installed at 52 locations. Corporation officials said the operations would continue until the end of the festival to maintain cleanliness and public safety.

Thousands Throng to Celebrate Meenakshi Sundareswarar Celestial Wedding in Madurai
Madurai: Amid a sea of devotees filling the air with intense devotion, the and , the highlight event of the 12-day annual Chithirai festival, was held with the tying of the divine knot amid the chanting of Vedic hymns at the Sri in Madurai city on the 10th day of the Chithirai festival, devotees started lining up in numbers from as early as 4 am at the temple to catch a glimpse of the grand 'Thirukalyanam' ceremony. In the evening of the same day, thousands of devotees thronged the four Masi streets to catch a glimpse of Goddess Meenakshi brought for a procession on the 'Poo Pallakku' or floral palanquin.

‘Thirukalyanam', the wedding for the masses
Elaborate arrangements had been made for the devotees who gathered on Chithirai streets outside Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai to witness the 'Thirukalyanam' (celestial wedding) of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar on Thursday. Giant LED screens had been installed on all corners of the Chithirai streets for devotees to have a virtual glimpse of the 'Thirukalyanam'. As per tradition, the women devotees replaced their 'Thali' with a new one on the occasion. The devotees eagerly paid 'moi' outside the temple as if it is the wedding of known persons. Several people distributed mangalsutra, vermilion powder and pictures of the presiding deities to fulfil their vow. People of all ages from different parts of the State had come along with their families to attend the grand event. Tin sheet roofs had been installed around the Chithirai streets and other places near the temple to protect the devotees from the sweltering summer heat. Water bottles, biscuits and hand fans were also distributed. A large number of police personnel had been deployed around the temple, and ambulances, fire tenders and mobile toilets stationed near the premises. Following the celestial wedding, thousands of devotees headed to the 'Thirukalyana Virundhu' organised by Pazhamudir Solai Thiruvarul Murugan Bhaktha Sabhai at Sethupathi Higher Secondary School, where close to a lakh devotees were treated to a grand feast. The devotees were served several dishes that included 'ven pongal', sambar rice, tomato rice, curd rice and vegetable pulao. The essential items like rice, ghee, oil and vegetables were contributed by the devotees.

Celestial wedding performed in a grand manner at Abirami Amman Temple
Thousands of devotees on Thursday witnessed the Thirukalyanam, the celestial wedding of Goddess Abirami Amman with Lord Padmagreeswarar at Sri Abirami Amman Temple in Dindigul, on the 10th day of the annual Chithirai festival. The celestial wedding took place at 10.20 a.m. and a 'maha deeparadhanai' was performed. The women devotees who gathered at the venue replaced their 'thali' with a new one. It is believed that the marital bond will become stronger. The deities were taken out on a procession. Annadhanam was provided to the devotees. The Chithirai festival began on April 29 with the hoisting of the holy flag on the temple premises. Dindigul Collector S. Saravanan, Mayor J. Ilamathi, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department officials and temple authorities were present. The authorities had made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival. Basic facilities like drinking water and toilet facilities were provided for the devotees. A large number of police personnel were deployed at the venue to ensure safety and security of the devotees. The car festival will be held on May 9 and 'theerthavari' the following day on May 10. On all festival days, the deities will be taken in a procession, according to a press release.
