The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to publish a district-wise list of around 65 lakh voters whose names were deleted from the draft electoral roll after the special intensive revision exercise in Bihar. The court directed the list be published on the websites of the state's district and chief electoral officers. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant also told the panel to specify that those who submit claims for inclusion in the list can furnish Aadhaar cards. Besides, the court said the poll body must provide the reason for each deletion. Sharing this will improve 'voter confidence' in the institution, the Supreme Court added. The court passed the directions while listening to petitions challenging the voter roll revision in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections, expected in October or November. Read on. The Supreme Court said that the problems related to the street dog population in Delhi are because of the inaction of local authorities. It made the observation while reserving its order on pleas challenging the directions passed by a two-judge bench on Monday to capture and shift street dogs in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram to shelters within six weeks. The suo motu case on stray dogs was shifted to a three-judge bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath after some lawyers told Chief Justice BR Gavai that the directions issued on Monday conflicted with previous orders of other benches. A day before song release of new movie, Darshan set to go back to jail as Supreme Court cancels his bail
The cancellation of Darshan Thoogudeepa's bail in the Renukaswamy murder case by the Supreme Court Thursday came just a day before the release of the first song of the Kannada actor's much-awaited movie The Devil. The makers of the movie announced on August 10 that the song 'Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek (if you live, live peacefully)' will be released at 10.05 am on Independence Day. Thoogudeepa was arrested from Mysuru while shooting for The Devil on June 11, 2024, over his alleged role in the murder of a fan, Renukaswamy, who allegedly stalked and abused his close friend and actor Pavitra Gowda on social media. His associates and Gowda were arrested after investigations revealed that the actor allegedly paid a few men for the murder in Bengaluru. In September, the Bengaluru police filed a 3,991-page chargesheet, naming Gowda as accused number one and Thoogudeepa as accused number two. Thoogudeepa was released from prison on October 30 on interim bail after spending 131 days in jail. On December 13, the Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Thoogudeepa, Gowda, co-accused Pradoosh Rao, Jagadish alias Jaggu, Anu Kumar, Lakshman M, and Nagaraju K. The Karnataka government then approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail. A Supreme Court bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan Thursday cancelled the bail, noting that the relief 'suffers from serious legal infirmities.' Shortly after the Supreme Court ordered the cancellation of bail, the Bengaluru police began preparing to contact seven accused, including Thoogudeepa and Gowda. A police officer said the accused must appear before either the police or the court, after which they will be taken to jail. 'Darshan Thoogudeepa will be sent to the Ballari jail, from where he had previously been released,' the officer added. After the Supreme Court judgment, the police arrived at the actor's house in R R Nagar, but he was not present there. Senior advocate Chidanand, representing the Karnataka government legal team, said the Supreme Court observed that no one is above the law and directed that a copy of the judgment be sent to other states as well. 'We informed the court about the two FIRs registered over special treatment in the jail. Also, we informed it about his movements after he was granted bail, which will influence the trial and witness,' he said. A S Ponnanna, legal adviser to the chief minister, said he welcomes the Supreme Court judgment. 'The state government challenged the bail order and also tried to convince the court of the influence that the accused can cause on the witnesses and the trial. We welcome the decision.' Renukaswamy's father Kashinath Shivannagoudar expressed his relief after the Supreme Court order. 'We were concerned when the Karnataka High Court granted bail, but the Supreme Court has shown that no one is above the law. We are relieved, and justice must prevail,' said Shivannagoudar. After his release from prison, Thoogudeepa chose not to attend public events and instead visited many temples, particularly in South India. In June, he obtained permission from the court to travel to Rajasthan, Dubai, Europe, and Thailand to complete the shooting of The Devil, directed by Prakash Veer. He returned from Thailand on July 30. According to sources, the movie's shooting has been completed and is now in the post-production stage. Renukaswamy murder chargesheet The Bengaluru police in their chargesheet recorded statements of 97 people, including the 27 recorded before the magistrate under Section 164 (recording of confessions and statements) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), three eyewitnesses, eight FSL and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) reports, 59 panchas and eight government officials (tehsildars, doctors, RTO officials and engineers). As many as 56 police officers were also included in the evidence list. Besides Thoogudeepa and Gowda, the others named in the chargesheet are Pawan K, 29; Raghavendra, 43; Nandish, 28; Jagadish, 36; Anukumar, 25; Ravi Shankar, 32; Dhanraj D, 27; Vinay V, 38; Nagaraju, 41; Laxman, 54; Deepak, 39; Pradosh, 40; Karthik, 27; Keshavamurthy, 27; and Nikhil Nayak, 21. Keshavamurthy was also involved in two criminal cases in the past.

SC cancels bail granted to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa in Renukaswamy murder case
The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa by the Karnataka High Court in the Renukaswamy murder case, reported Bar and Bench. The court also cancelled the bail of actor Pavithra Gowda, who is Thoogudeepa's partner, and five others in the matter. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan was hearing an appeal filed by the Karnataka government challenging the High Court order granting them bail. The court warned against the accused persons being provided special treatment in jail. 'The day we come to know that the accused persons are being provided five-star treatment, the first step would be to place the superintendent into suspension along with all other officials,' Bar and Bench quoted the bench as saying. Thoogudeepa was arrested on June 11, 2024, in connection with the murder of a 33-year-old man named Renukaswamy, who was his fan. Renukaswamy had allegedly been sending abusive messages to Gowda. His body was found in a drain in Bengaluru's Summanahalli area on June 9, 2024. In October, the High Court granted interim bail to Thoogudeepa for six weeks to undergo surgery. It also granted regular bail to Thoogudeepa, Gowda and the five other persons in December. The single-judge High Court bench of Justice S Vishwajith Shetty had said that the prosecution had failed to provide grounds of arrest to the accused, Bar and Bench reported. On July 24, the Supreme Court said that the High Court's approach in granting bail to Thoogudeepa was ' troubling '. The observation had come a week after the Supreme Court said that it was ' not convinced ' by the High Court's decision. The bench had also asked the actor's lawyers to provide 'good reason' why the Supreme Court should not interfere with the bail order. Advocate Siddharth Dave, representing Thoogudeepa, had said that the High Court found the statements of the two eyewitnesses to be contradictory. He added that one of their statements was also recorded after 12 days. However, the Supreme Court had verbally observed that it was more concerned about the manner in which the High Court dealt with the actor's bail plea, further asking if it follows the same approach in all such applications. In August 2024, a Bengaluru court allowed the police to shift Thoogudeepa to the Ballari district prison from Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru after reports emerged that he was being given preferential treatment in custody. Nine central jail officials in Bengaluru were suspended after a photograph showing Thoogudeepa sitting on a prison lawn in the company of three inmates was widely shared on social media.

State Women's Commission urges action on online abuse targeting actor Ramya
Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Women's Commission, in a letter sent on Monday, urged the Bengaluru Police Commissioner to take action against the surge of online abuse directed at women, including former MP and actor Ramya, following 'derogatory posts' on social media, allegedly made by fans of Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa. 'There is a report about derogatory messages being posted on social media against former MP and film actress Ramya. This is affecting the status of women, and the State Women's Commission has taken this matter seriously,' the letter said. A copy was shared with the media. The Commission asked Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to investigate the matter, take appropriate action against those responsible, and ensure that 'the abusive content is removed from social media platforms.' Reports earlier indicated that Ramya (known as Divya Spandana) was planning to approach the police regarding the alleged harassment. She is said to be compiling the abusive messages to submit as part of her complaint. On July 27, the actor shared screenshots of some of the posts on her Instagram page, claiming, 'It is because of trolls with a misogynistic mindset that women and young girls are subjected to harassment, rape, and murder.' Ramya has consistently spoken out against the rising trend of online abuse targeting women, often calling out the violent and abusive nature of such trolling. Thoogudeepa, a popular figure in the Kannada film industry, is currently out on bail in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a native of Chitradurga. Renukaswamy, reportedly a fan of Thoogudeepa, was allegedly killed for posting derogatory remarks about Pavitra Gowda, an associate of the actor. Thoogudeepa's fanbase, which refers to him as 'D-Boss', is known to 'defend him aggressively on social media.'
