Bahrain Gains Full Membership in the Mediterranean Parliament
A delegation from Bahrain's Parliamentary Division, led by Dr. Jehad Abdullah Al-Fadhel, Second Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, has officially received full and permanent membership in the Mediterranean Parliament. The membership was conferred during the closing session of the 19th General Assembly of the Mediterranean Parliament, held in Rome, Italy, from February 19 to 21. The delegation had previously submitted an official request to join, emphasizing Bahrain's commitment to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and fostering unified perspectives on key regional and international issues.
During the assembly, the delegation witnessed the election of a new president for the Mediterranean Parliament for the 2025-2026 term, along with the selection of new members for the council's executive office. Additionally, they attended, as observers, meetings reviewing reports from three of the Parliament's standing committees.
The delegation actively participated in discussions within the First Standing Committee on "Political and Security Cooperation and Activities for 2025," which covered topics such as "Geopolitical and Security Developments in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions" and "Emerging Threats from Terrorist and Criminal Activities in Mediterranean Parliamentary Areas."
Furthermore, the delegation attended sessions of the Second Standing Committee, which focused on "Economic, Social, and Environmental Cooperation and Activities for 2025." Reports discussed included "Challenges and Opportunities for Economic Growth in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions" and "Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Desertification: Implementation of the Three Rio Conventions and Environmental Prospects in Mediterranean Parliamentary Areas."
The Third Standing Committee also presented its work on "Intercultural Dialogue, Human Rights, and Activities for 2025." Topics reviewed included reports on "Human Trafficking During Complex Crises in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Regions" and "The Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation as a Fundamental Human Right."
Bahrain's full membership in the Mediterranean Parliament marks a significant step in enhancing its role in regional and international parliamentary affairs, paving the way for greater cooperation and dialogue on issues of shared interest.
