Australia joins two-state call

TDT | agencies The global movement to recognise a Palestinian state received yesterday a big push with Australia declaring it will recognise it at the UN General Assembly in September. International concern is growing about the plight of the more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the fighting has triggered a dire humanitarian crisis and warnings of mass starvation. 'The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is rightly at the forefront of the global agenda,' Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday Humanity's best hope 'A two-state solution is humanity's best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Midd l e E a s t a n d to bring an end to the conflict, suffering and starvation in Gaza,' he told reporters in Canberra. 'Until Israeli and Palestinian statehood is permanent, peace can only be temporary. 'Australia will recognise the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own. We will work with the international community to make this right a reality.' 'There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it,' Albanese said. He said that Australia's decision was predicated on reassurances from the Palestinian Authority that there would be 'no role for Hamas in any future Palestinian state'. The Palestinian Authority, however, does not have a presence in Gaza, which has been governed by Hamas for nearly two decades. France announced on 24 July 2025 that it will recognize Palestine in September 2025 at the United Nations General Assembly. Malta is also slated to formally recognize Palestine around the same period in September 2025. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said his country would carefully consider whether to do the same over the next month. He added that New Zealand's recognition of a Palestinian state was a 'matter of when, not if'. Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry.

At Geneva Conference, Bahrain Renews Call for Two-State Solution for Palestine

Bahrain has reaffirmed the importance of dialogue and international parliamentary cooperation as a path to achieving lasting peace and justice in a world facing increasing political and humanitarian challenges. Speaking at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and head of Bahrain's parliamentary delegation, said that today's complex global crises demand collective action and multilateralism. 'Constructive dialogue creates sound policies that serve mutual interests and protect nations and people from the tragedies of wars and conflicts,' Fakhro said. He emphasized the growing role of parliaments in promoting good governance, building trust between nations, and upholding international law and human rights. Fakhro also addressed the deepening humanitarian crises caused by armed conflicts, climate change, and widening development gaps. He stressed that history has repeatedly shown that 'lasting peace can only be achieved through honest and responsible dialogue based on shared values and mutual respect.' Highlighting Bahrain's commitment to peace and human dignity, he renewed the Kingdom's call for an international conference to resolve the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution. He condemned the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza under the current blockade, and urged the global community to ensure the establishment of a sovereign, viable Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders. Fakhro urged parliaments around the world to embrace their historic role in building a culture of peace, not just as a political slogan but as a legislative and moral responsibility that ensures social and economic justice. He called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union to continue championing just causes and acting as a voice for the world's conscience. Despite global instability, he expressed hope that international institutions, led by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, could help steer the world toward peace and prosperity. 'Hope will never fade as long as parliaments stand firm on principles and give voice to the aspirations of people,' he concluded. Bahrain's delegation to the conference included Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, MP Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, and Dr. Bassam Ismail Al-Benmahmood, a member of the Shura Council's Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee.

Bahrain Highlights Peaceful Innovation at Global Parliamentary Conference in Geneva

Bahrain reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful innovation as a key driver of sustainable development and stability during the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in Geneva from July 29 to 31. Dr. Bassam Ismail Al-BenMohammed, a Shura Council member and representative of Bahrain's parliamentary delegation, said that under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain has built a comprehensive national framework to support innovation in governance. He explained that this approach not only enhances digital transparency but also empowers young people and civil society to contribute meaningfully to decision-making, while keeping pace with global changes in a way that balances national values with international developments. Speaking at a panel discussion titled 'Innovation for a Peaceful Future and New Solutions for a Turbulent World,' Dr. Al-BenMohammed highlighted Bahrain's achievements in developing legislation that supports peaceful innovation and the knowledge economy. These include landmark laws on personal data protection, cybercrime, electronic transactions, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property—reflecting the Kingdom's clear political will to use innovation as a tool for stability and long-term peace. 'Innovation for peace is not a luxury or just a slogan,' he said. 'It is a conscious political act, reflected in forward-looking legislation, effective oversight, and fair partnerships that restore people's confidence in peaceful change. Every law passed with foresight and every transparent decision is an innovation that serves human stability.' Bahrain's delegation to the conference also included Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives. The event, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the United Nations, carried the theme 'A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace and Justice for All.'
