Hoffenheim boss again promises to streamline 39-man-squad

Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Schicker has promised immediate 'streamlining' of his club's absurdly large 39-man-roster. A squad of such size is unheard of in the Bundesliga. The Sinsheimers – who narrowly avoided relegation last season and only have the league and cup to contest this year – have desperately been trying to shed players since the end of last season. Schicker has made this specific promise before, but hasn't exactly executed her the course of the summer. German youth international Joshua Quarshie remains the only departure on the TSG front thus far. Meanwhile, Schicker and staff have brought in four new arrivals: striker Tim Lemperle, defensive midfielder Leon Avdullahu, and defenders Bernardo and Koki Machida. Advertisement There continue to be rumors that the Hoffenheim administrative team are targeting still more players. Schicker nevertheless emphasized to reporters at the club's summer training camp that 'one or two loan deals' would help him and the front office reduce this 'very, very large squad'. Hoffenheim's squad features plenty of obvious deadweight that can be cut. Players such as Haris Tabakovic, Mërgim Berisha, Valetin Gendrey, Arthur Chaves, Stanley Nsoki, Florian Grillitsch, and Attila Szalai are still not likely to generate much interest. It does appear as if the Kraichgauer can fetch decent transfer fees for talents such as Fisnik Asllani and Anton are also a few whispers that Grillitsch and Szalai can be parked in loan locales. Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu does report that Süper Lig club Kasımpaşa may be interested in bringing the Hungarian centre-back back to Turkey, but such rumors have proved false on multiple occasions in the past. German footballer spends the night in hospital after being 'attacked' on night out - and will miss crucial game in his side's season

A German footballer has been taken to hospital after he was allegedly assaulted on a night out. The star, who plays for Cologne in the second division in Germany, will now likely miss his side's crunch game against Kaiserslautern on Sunday. Cologne are currently second in the table, but will slip out of that position if they lose and SV Elversberg or Paderborn win their games. Tim Lemperle, who plays as a forward for the club, was, according to Bild, out on Sunday evening with friends in a borough of Cologne when he suffered a broken nose in a confrontation. A fight is said to have broken out in a boathouse bear near the bank of the River Rhine, involving Lemperle's group and another group. Lemperle and his friends were allegedly attacked at around 9pm local time when leaving the venue before things calmed down. The player, though, was reportedly taken to a local hospital and stayed in overnight before leaving on Monday morning, two days after he had played against FC Nuremberg in league action. The police are said to be investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses. The forward's manager, meanwhile - Friedhelm Funkel - admitted the man is unlikely to play a part in the final game of the league season. 'I know he was physically assaulted on Sunday,' The Cologne boss said. 'He sustained facial injuries. 'The likelihood of him playing on Sunday is slim. It can't be completely dismissed, but it is slim. I can't say anything more about it.' The former Frankfurt forward, who has also played for the likes of Mainz and for Germany at various youth levels, has scored 10 goals for his side this season. He has played mainly as a centre forward, but is also comfortable on the right wing.
