5 friends recognized by the city during scholarship banquet

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL)— From forming the group on a cruise ship to their second annual scholarship banquet, the Fab Five now have their efforts officially recognized by the city of Wichita Falls. For two years now, the Fab Five, made up of friends Dr. Sonja Calliste, Sophia Adair, Stacy Barrett, Cheryl Lynn, and Jackie Oats-Campbell, have dedicated a large chunk of their time to helping high school students in Wichita Falls attend college. This year, they gave out three scholarships to students from Memorial, Legacy, and City View high schools. Mayor Tim Short recognized their hard work over the last two years. He said it truly exemplifies what he thinks a Wichita Falls citizen should aspire to be. 'Have pride in your community. Take care of your yard, your street, your community, your neighbor. They do that,' Short said. 'They personify that and it's a breath of fresh air. And you get to see them be celebrated tonight as well as their scholarship recipients.' After receiving recognition from the mayor, the Fab Five are set on continuing their mission to help Wichita Falls youth achieve their dreams through education and hard work. Two of this year's recipients will attend Midwestern State University, and the third will attend Texas Tech University in the fall. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Wichita Falls councilors make final decision on lake lots sale

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The chapter of lake lots between Arrowhead and Kickapoo neighbors with the city of Wichita Falls has come to a close. After more than a year of setting the new lease rate and getting the land appraised, the city has made a decision on a potential sale. Wichita Falls maintains drought restrictions amid lake levels 'We are not going to sell any lake lots at any price at any time in the foreseeable future,' Wichita Falls Mayor Tim Short said. A sigh of relief for some Lake Arrowhead and Kickapoo neighbors, but frustrations remain high. 'I think it's very sad to up our leases and give us nothing in return,' Tina Jones said. 'At what point does it become [a] much [higher] priority for the city of Wichita Falls, not just a priority for lake residents?' a lake neighbor asked councilors. A third-party appraiser returned samples of the lots at fair market value, but some said they were not fair and unaffordable. 'At $145,000, and I fell over,' one neighbor said. 'It's a great lot, but dang, you know, so not having to come up with that money is a relief.' 'I do not think the values are appropriate. You're creating a situation where the community has a destruction of community value.' City Attorney Kinley Hegglund explains selling one or two lots doesn't make fiscal sense. 'To try to sell one or two or three lots in the middle of an unplanned and surveyed large parcel of land is problematic without getting the whole parcel of land surveyed. That would be in the neighborhood of 4 to $500,000 to do that,' Hegglund said. Neighbors call for a bigger voice on the dias. Also, accusing the city of not keeping up with road conditions. 'Y'all can elect a member that says, hey, this is the representative that's going out and having the town halls at Lake Arrowhead or Lake Kickapoo.' 'The roads out there are or is in good shape or sometimes better than what we have, in the city limits. And I'm saying that as a general rule, not every road,' Assistant City Manager Paul Menzies said. Mayor Tim Short reminds citizens he's a phone call away, making a call to action for neighbors to form a committee. 'If there are groups that want to meet you, let me know,' Short said. 'We'll be there,' Short said. The council is making its final decision on the lake lots. It could be another five years before the issue is revisited to determine the lease rate. Community leaders join ENJJPT trainers to foster relations

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — It turned out to be a beautiful morning to fly over Wichita Falls. From briefing to takeoff and more, three area mayors got to experience ENJJPT. An experience they call continuing to build community relations. 'I actually thought I might [be getting] pranked,' Wichita Falls Mayor Tim Short said when asked about his reaction to the invitation. Short, along with Holliday Mayor Brad Litteken and Iowa Park Mayor Jeff Pogatshnik, took to the sky inside T-38s, an opportunity Short was quick to accept when invited. 'This shows just an added level of support between our community and our NATO partners to be able to come out and have this kind of experience is quite an honor,' Short said Littleken said Sheppard is sewn in all surrounding communities. As Holliday's mayor, getting a glimpse of ENJJPT helps him better his community. 'It's a big outreach,' Litteken said. 'It's definitely necessary, but we need to build those bridges with them. We've got plenty of pilots and things that live [in Holliday], so they're obviously directly connected to it.' Flights took off around 10:50 a.m. and lasted a little less than an hour. 80th Training Wing Commander Colonel Jeffery Shulman said bringing community partners on base will be a win-win for everybody. 'It's nice to be able to share some of that with them. To bring the military family together with the community. That's why we do these kinds of things,' Shulman said. 'We cannot do our mission; our families cannot be successful without the support of the communities around the base.' As communities come together, they continue to support the mission of ENJJPT.
