Champaign Police Dept. announces results of speed awareness campaign
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department issued 19 warnings, 61 citations and made two arrests on Speed Awareness Day. Department officials said the statewide traffic campaign was done as part of an effort to reduce speeding. The traffic campaign was held on July 23 in partnership with Champaign Police, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and more than 200 law enforcement agencies statewide. Crime Stoppers seeking tips on July burglary in Ogden 'Every day, Champaign Police join our partners across Illinois in keeping our roads safe for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists,' Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler said. 'The joint focus of Speed Awareness Day helped to keep our communities safe from speeding and the real harm it can cause.' Champaign Police officers spent 53 hours enforcing traffic laws with a focus on high traffic roads, especially in areas that impact neighborhoods. The results included: 19 warnings issued for traffic infractions 61 citations 40 citations for speeding 7 citations for expired registration 5 citations for driving without insurance 4 citations for driving without a valid license 4 citations for moving violations, including running stop signs and failure to signal 1 citation for distracted driving 2 arrests made for outstanding warrants 'Injuries reported' in Monday morning crash on I-57 in Champaign The police department said the campaign was made possible by funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Champaign County honors lives lost in the line of duty for National Police Week
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Signing up to be in law enforcement is no easy task. That's why Champaign County took time to honor their officers during National Police Week. The community came out to support the men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty Tuesday morning. The ceremony focused on officers in Champaign County and throughout the state, calling each person's name one by one. Boone reappointed as Urbana Police Chief WCIA caught up with law enforcement leaders from Champaign County. 'Nobody should die from violence,' said Champaign Police Chief Timothy Tyler. 'And to see the family members — this is not the only time we see them. We see them at weddings, at funerals, at graduations.' They said being able to carry on the officers' legacies and have the community support them is what it's all about. 'Every time we see an officer who has been killed in the line of duty, it just helps reiterate the importance of this job and the importance of taking this job seriously and those community partnerships that we make,' said Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman. So far in 2025, there have been 25 officers killed in the country. To continue National Police Week, Champaign will be have an award ceremony on Wednesday and an open house on Saturday. Champaign Police invites community to attend Police Week events
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is encouraging community members to participate in events during the 2025 Police Week. This year's National Police Week is taking place from May 12-18. The events will honor fallen officers, highlight employee accomplishments and teach the community about the law enforcement through the return of the biennial Champaign Police Department Open House. Champaign, Urbana to participate in Bike and Roll to School Day 'Police Week allows all of us the chance to pause and reflect on the work we do and the incredible teammates who do it,' Police Chief Timothy Tyler said. 'As part of this week of ceremony and celebration, we are excited to give a behind-the-scenes look at your Champaign Police Department, featuring tours, exhibits, and demonstrations for everyone to enjoy.' The Champaign Police Memorial Ceremony will be held on May 13 at 9 a.m. at West Side Park and will honor law enforcement officers from around the world who have died in the line of duty. This ceremony will pay special tribute to Champaign Police Officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Champaign community. The three fallen officers being honored by the Champaign Police Department are Thomas Dodsworth (end of watch July 6, 1913), Robert Tatman (end of watch Nov. 25, 1967) and Christopher Oberheim (end of watch May 19, 2021). The Champaign Police Employee Awards Ceremony will take place on May 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Champaign Police Department at 82 E. University Avenue. This will honor the exceptional efforts of officers and professional staff members during the last year. U of I alum inducted into US Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame Awards at this event will include the announcement of Employee of the Year and Officer of the Year, along with recognizing officers who went above the call of duty in specific actions. The biennial Champaign Police Open House will be held on May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at the department's facility at 82 E. University Avenue and brings the community inside for a closer look at the police department's operations. It will feature a fun, family-friendly atmosphere to learn about Champaign Police and their community safety mission. The Open House will include features such as touch-a-truck with multiple CPD vehicles, demonstrations from specialized units including the Crisis Negotiation Unit, Crime Scene Unit and SWAT team, access to historical displays, and tours of the Champaign Police Department. National Police Week has been held since 1962 in the week that includes Peace Officers Memorial Day, which takes place on May 15.
