Saffie Osborne calls on Steve Cauthen for Preakness pointers

It will be the first time the 23-year-old has ridden in America when her father Jamie gives her the leg up ahead of the Triple Crown contest, and the excitement is now building having been given some pointers by weighing room titan Steve Cauthen prior to the trip to Baltimore. 'It's really exciting and I've been so busy that it never really hit me until this week, once the draw was done and the build-up to the race started to be more noticeable,' said Osborne. 'It's obviously been in my mind for a while since Dubai but it wasn't confirmed until last week, so now it's a really exciting time. 'Fortunately I've had some experience on the dirt in Dubai but it will be my first time riding in America. So it will be a new experience for me, but I've spoken to plenty of people about the track and the opposition. 'It's amazing how many people have been willing to help and Sophie Doyle, James' sister who now rides in America, she was our apprentice when I was only eight and has been helping me out. 'Michael Hills also put me in touch with Steve Cauthen and there's no man better to speak to about American racing. I've been doing plenty of homework and hopefully it will stand me in good stead.' Heart Of Honor enjoyed a fine winter in Dubai, winning his first two at Meydan before suffering heartbreaking reversals in three subsequent hot events. The UAE Derby (G2) runner-up HEART OF HONOR will compete this Saturday in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Here is more on the story of the trainer @osbornejamie and his daughter jockey making her US debut @OsborneSaffie. — FanDuel Racing (@FanDuel_Racing) May 14, 2025 The three-year-old came agonisingly close to emulating Osborne's former star Toast Of New York in the UAE Derby and although that defeat still rankles his big-race pilot, she hopes the experience will serve her mount well ahead of stepping into the American unknown. 'He ran some huge races in Dubai, but the UAE Derby was a fairly gutting experience which doesn't get any easier even now,' continued Osborne. 'But we wouldn't be doing this and going to America if we didn't think he had a chance. Anyone would love to have a runner in an American Classic but we're not there to say we've had a runner, we want to go and try to win it. 'It's a totally different kettle of fish going from Dubai to America and we're stepping into the unknown a little bit, but we'll see on Saturday how he copes.' Memories of the aforementioned Toast Of York are making the Heart Of Honor journey even more special for the father-and-daughter team. A young Osborne could only sit and watch on TV as the globetrotting Toast Of New York was denied Breeders' Cup Classic glory by the barest margins at Santa Anita in 2014, but is now central to the next chapter in her family's American adventures, eager to correct the record of 11 years ago. Osborne continued: 'When Toast Of New York ran in the Breeders' Cup Classic, I was at home sat on the edge of mum and dad's bed watching it late at night. 'I always remember Dad doing an interview last year about the race 10 years on and at the end of it he kind of got emotional and said he wants another like Toast so he can try to experience it all again. 'So it's funny how since he's said that, this horse has come along and it wouldn't be possible without his owners Jim and Claire Bryce, who adore their horses. It's great to have such willing and kind owners to share the experience with. 'I was always hoping Dad would have another Toast Of New York and people always ask jockeys which races would you like to win and everyone says the Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but there's a part of me that would love to win a Breeders' Cup Classic, just for a bit of recompense for Dad.'

Heart Of Honor primed for crack at Preakness glory

The three-year-old enjoyed an excellent winter campaign in Dubai, impressing in victories at Meydan in December and January before finishing second in three successive races, most notably when beaten by a nose when bidding to emulate former Osborne star Toast Of New York in the UAE Derby. Toast Of New York was famously beaten a nose in the Breeders' Cup Classic at the end of his three-year-old campaign and 11 years on, Heart Of Honor is now set to begin an arduous journey to Baltimore to make his Stateside debut in the second leg of the American Triple Crown on May 17. Osborne said: 'He leaves here tomorrow and there's lots of moving parts to his life over the next five or six days, which makes it even tougher for him, but sadly there's no way around that. 'He'll land in Churchill Downs sort of middle of the night tomorrow, he'll do his 48 hours quarantine there, then we're going to exercise him on the track at Churchill for a couple of days and then ship him down to Pimlico on Monday afternoon. 'It's 11 hours from Churchill Downs to Pimlico, which is not ideal, but clearly he's a horse that wouldn't ever run in Europe, so if we weren't doing this, he'd have his shoes off and be having a break and it's a long time between now and next winter's Middle Eastern season.' Osborne insists Heart Of Honor has shown him all the right signs since returning from Meydan and confirmed his daughter Saffie will keep the ride at Pimlico. He added: 'If at any stage he'd come back from Dubai and showed us that he wasn't going to be able to perform at his best over the next couple of months, then we wouldn't be going, but they're only a three-year-old once, he appears to have thrived since he came back, so we felt it was a risk worth taking. 'He improved during his stay in Meydan, he looked to have improved physically before the UAE Derby and obviously that reflected in his race – and it looks like he's continued to improve. 'We're under no illusions, it's a tough ask for him, but I believe he's not a forlorn hope.'

Jamie Osborne targeting a 2nd UAE Derby triumph with Heart Of Honor on Dubai World Cup night

LONDON: British trainer Jamie Osborne is eying another victory in the Group 2 UAE Derby as he prepares Heart Of Honor for the prestigious $1,000,000 race on Dubai World Cup night on Saturday. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The Lambourn-based handler, who memorably won the contest with Toast Of New York in 2014, is hoping his latest contender can emulate that success. Osborne's charge has been a regular feature at Meydan throughout the Dubai Racing Carnival, notching two victories before narrowly missing out in his last two outings. The David Redvers-bred colt, from Tweenhills in Gloucestershire, will head into the race with a tactical change — he will wear blinkers for the first time in a bid to sharpen his performance. Adding to the family affair, Heart Of Honor will be partnered by Osborne's daughter, Saffie Osborne, in the high-profile event. Speaking to Great British Racing International, Osborne detailed his hopes for Heart Of Honor's performance. 'Heart Of Honor won his first two races in Dubai and was not disgraced in defeat in his last two races. I think there were factors involved in his last defeat and I don't think he was at his best. We learned a lot about him,' he said. 'I think he just needs to be sharper through the gate and sharper through the first half of his races, and the application of blinkers is to help him with that. We have got him in a better place now than we got him before the Al-Bastakiya. We are hopeful that he will run his best race next Saturday. 'It's great for the owners, who have trusted me to do this. The plan when we bought him was always to bring him to Dubai for a Middle Eastern winter campaign with the hope that he would make it to the derby. Thankfully this plan has worked out so far, but we have got one more mission to accomplish,' Osborne added. Osborne remains the only British trainer to have won the UAE Derby, and he reflected on Toast Of New York's success a decade ago. '(That) win is something that I look back on with pride, and getting the opportunity to do it again this year with Heart Of Honor is special. It's even more special to get to do it with Saffie on board,' he said. 'When Toast Of New York won it, she was 11 years old and was screaming at the television at home. When we arrived home from Dubai, she had made all the banners for his stable and was very excited, so it's thrilling to get the chance to do it again with her,' he added. Osborne has been a regular competitor in Dubai in recent years, sending a steady stream of runners to the Middle East and picking up notable victories with horses such as Cliffs Of Capri and Ouzo. He also landed the Dukhan Sprint in Qatar in 2023 with Emaraaty Ana, placed fourth in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup in 2022 with Alignak and finished runner-up on Saudi Cup night in 2020 with Mekong. Osborne said he was enthusiastic about competing in the region. 'Personally, I enjoy coming to race in Dubai and the Middle East during the British off-season, and my clients enjoy racing their horses here, too,' he said. 'We've had a good year this year in Dubai, and my horses have won plenty of prize money finishing placed in big races. We look forward to coming back again next year as it works well before our racing starts here in the UK.'
