Previewing the Frozen Four: BU and Penn State have different pedigrees, but similar journeys to St. Louis

Penn State (22-13-4) finished fifth in the Big Ten, one of four from the conference to reach the postseason, and the only one to make it out of the first round, as Michigan State, Minnesota, and Ohio State were all bounced. Advertisement BU barely resembled a team that would even qualify for the tournament, never mind reach the Frozen Four, when it dropped a 7-5 decision at Yale on Dec. 29. But when asked after Wednesday's practice at Enterprise Arena if he envisioned his squad back in the Frozen Four after stumbling against the Bulldogs, coach Jay Pandolfo said he still had plenty of belief. 'I think sometimes it's good for a team to go through the adversity we've went through this year, as long as you learn from it,' said Pandolfo. 'And I think we have, in a lot of different moments. Advertisement 'Right after the game maybe if you asked me, I would have said something different, but knowing these players that we have, I'd say, 'Yeah, we'll find a way.'' Helping to spark the turnaround has been goalie Mikhail Yegorov, who has started the last 16 games since enrolling in the school in January, going 10-5-1 with a .931 save percentage and a 2.04 goals-against average. Mikhail Yegorov joined the Terriers after the new year. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff Even with the turnaround, the Terriers have had a few clunkers, including a 5-1 loss at home to Northeastern on Feb. 21 and a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of UConn in the Hockey East semifinals on March 20 that didn't even feel that close. But they responded with a pair of strong showings in the Toledo Regional, posting victories over Whereas bouts of inconsistency continue to plague BU, Penn State has been on a roll since the holiday break. After sputtering to a 7-9 start, including an 0-8 mark in Big Ten play, the Nittany Lions have gone 15-4-4 since Jan. 1. They received the final at-large bid for the tournament and were the No. 4 seed in the Allentown Regional, but managed to post wins over Advertisement Goalie Arsenii Sergeev will certainly look familiar to Hockey East fans. He played two years at UConn before transferring to Penn State for the 2024-25 season, going 19-8-4 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average. He was the goalie of record for the Nittany Lions' second-half surge. Although both teams are getting stellar play in net, the game shouldn't lack for offense. BU ranks fourth in the NCAA in goals per game at 3.8. Penn State is seventh with 3.5. Junior Quinn Hutson and freshman Cole Eiserman each have 23 goals to lead the Terriers. Hutson's 1.39 points per game is second in the NCAA, while younger brother Cole Hutson leads all NCAA defenseman in points per game (1.24) and is first among NCAA freshmen in points (46) and assists (32). Related : Sophomore Aiden Fink leads Penn State in goals (23) and assists (30), and is third in points per game nationally with 1.36. Freshman Charlie Cerrato is second on the team in both assists (27) and points (42). Previewing Denver-Western Michigan While BU and Penn State are meeting for the first time, the day's first matchup features teams that are very familiar with each other. Western Michigan (32-7-1) and Denver (31-11-1) met three times this season, all decided by one goal, two of which went to overtime. The NCHC foes split a series in Kalamazoo, Mich. in December. The Broncos took the rubber match in the conference championship game March 22, rallying from a 3-0 hole to force overtime and prevailing, 4-3 against the defending national champions. This game also features a disparity in postseason experience. Denver has won 10 national titles, the most of any Division 1 program, and is going for its third in four seasons. Western Michigan is making its first appearance in the Frozen Four. Advertisement The winners will meet in Saturday's championship game (7:30 p.m., ESPN2). Follow Andrew Mahoney

Canucks prospect rankings: Anthony Romani looks like a draft steal

It's getting easier and easier to wonder if the Vancouver Canucks found a diamond in the draft rough with Anthony Romani. Vancouver's 2024 sixth-round selection bagged a hat trick in the Barrie Colts' 7-3 win over the Niagara IceDogs in Game 2 of their best-of-seven OHL first-round playoff series on Monday. Barrie has a 2-0 lead in the set, pairing Monday's victory with a 4-2 triumph in the opener last Thursday that featured two goals from Romani. The 19-year-old Romani was first star in both games. Game 3 was slated to go Tuesday night. Romani finished the regular season with 11 tallies in his final 12 contests, giving him 21 goals and 35 points in 35 games on the campaign. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed shot started the season with the North Bay Battalion, suffered a broken clavicle just six games in and was traded to Barrie while he was recovering. Last summer was his second crack at the draft. He was coming off a 58-goal season with North Bay, but there were questions about his skating. Romani told Chris Faber of last month: 'The injury is obviously something to work through. It sucked that it was at the beginning of the year, but I think it allowed me to have time to work on different stuff, like getting bigger and stronger and being in the gym more. I was able to do that at the beginning of the year, gaining a couple of pounds and some muscle.' Romani continues to climb up our Canucks top-10 prospect power rankings. To be eligible for the rankings, players must be born in 2000 or later and can't currently be with the big club. Here's the latest instalment. Last week's rankings are in parentheses. All stats are as of Tuesday morning. 1. Tom Willander, D, Boston University Terriers (1) The Terriers play Penn State in the Frozen Four semifinals April 10 in St. Louis. Denver and Western Michigan are in the other semis, and the final is April 12 in St. Louis. BU (23-13-2) beat Ohio State 8-3 and then Cornell 3-2 in overtime last week to win the Toledo Regional. Willander (37-2-21-23) is in his sophomore season and there's been speculation that the 20-year-old, who was Vancouver's first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in 2023, could leave school and sign on with the organization in some fashion when the Terriers' season is done. That could include him inking an amateur tryout for Abbotsford and finishing the year there, which would allow the start of his entry-level contract with Vancouver to bump to next season. 2. Sawyer Mynio, D, Calgary Hitmen (2) The No. 3-seeded Hitmen carried a 2-0 lead on No. 6 Saskatoon into Game 3 on Tuesday of their best-of-seven WHL Eastern Conference opening round set. Mynio had two assists in the first game versus Saskatoon. The 19-year-old was a 2023 third-round selection. 3. , LW, (3) Abbotsford (37-23-2-1) had won nine straight going into a Tuesday visit to Bakersfield and had climbed to third spot in the AHL's Pacific Division as a result. They are at San Diego on Wednesday and home to Laval on Saturday. They had nine games left in the regular season going into Tuesday. Bains is the team's top scorer currently and he carried a four-game point streak (0-4-4) into this week. The 24-year-old signed as a free agent in March 2022. 4. Max Sasson, C, Abbotsford (4) Sasson missed the back-to-back 5-1 wins in the San Jose weekend twin bill because he had been recalled to Vancouver on an emergency basis. He was reassigned to Abbotsford on Sunday. The 24-year-old, who signed as a free agent in March 2023, has 10 points (2-8) in his past seven games with Abbotsford. 5. Anthony Romani, RW, Barrie Colts (7) Barrie are the No. 2 seeds in the Eastern Conference, Niagara are No. 7. Romani was a part of a couple of playoff runs with North Bay and was 38-17-4-21 in his OHL playoff career going into Tuesday. Game 4 of that series is Thursday. 6. Kirill Kudryavtsev, D, Abbotsford (6) The 21-year-old was plus-2 in Saturday's 5-1 win in San Jose, pushing him to plus-13 on the season, which leads the team. Kudryavtsev was a 2022 seventh rounder. 7. Danila Klimovich, RW, Abbotsford (5) Klimovich leads Abbotsford in goals. The 22-year-old, who was a 2021 second rounder, had an assist in Friday's 5-1 win in San Jose. 8. Ty Mueller, C, Abbotsford (8) Mueller is tied for third on the team in plus-minus (plus-8). The 22-year-old, who was a 2023 fourth rounder, had an assist Friday and has five points (1-4) in his past five games. 9. Nikita Tolopilo, G, Abbotsford (9) The 24-year-old won his fourth straight decision, stopping 38 shots in that Friday 5-1 win over San Jose. Tolopilo (16-14-2, 2.66 goals against average, .901 save percentage) signed as a free agent in March 2023. 10. Riley Patterson, C, Barrie (10) Patterson had an assist in Barrie's 7-5 Game 2 win on Monday. The 19-year-old, who was a 2024 fourth rounder, was 64-25-34-59 in the regular season. @ sewen@ Canucks prospects: Tom Willander and Boston University start elimination playoffs Thursday Canucks sign prospect Aku Koskenvuo. How to watch Ohio State vs Boston University hockey on Thursday in NCAA Regionals

How to watch Ohio State vs Boston University hockey on Thursday in NCAA Regionals After a heartbreaking loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament last weekend, the Ohio State men's hockey team will begin its quest for a NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship. The Buckeyes earned a No. 3 seed in the Toledo Regional and will face the Terriers of Boston University, the No. 2 seed in the same bracket. Boston University is 21-13-2 on the season. The Buckeyes and Terriers didn't play many common opponents but did face a couple in Michigan and Notre Dame. Boston lost both matches to the Wolverines and beat the Irish in their lone game. For comparison's sake, OSU was 4-0 against Notre Dame and split 2-2 with Michigan. Ohio State should have a slight home-ice advantage as Toledo is just a short drive from Columbus. As if the opening round wasn't hard enough, should the Buckeyes topple the Terriers, they most likely will get a rematch with the Big Ten Champion Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans earned the No. 1 seed in the Toledo Regional. But let's not get ahead of ourselves as the Bucks have a tough task ahead in the first round. Here's how to watch Ohio State take on Boston University on Thursday afternoon, including time, TV schedule, and streaming information: What channel is Ohio State vs Boston University on Thursday? TV Channel: ESPNU Live Stream: Fubo (Watch Now! - Regional restrictions may apply) Ohio State vs Boston University game time Thursday Date: Thursday, March 27 Thursday, March 27 Start time: 2 p.m. ET Ohio State vs Boston University predictions, picks, odds Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Friday, Nov. 21 Prediction - Ohio State 4, Boston University 3: This will be no easy task for the Buckeyes. The Terriers are ranked No. 8 in the country and OSU is ranked No. 9. Boston has a slightly higher goals per game than Ohio State, but the Buckeyes allow fewer goals per game. The game could easily go either way, but we'll give the nod to the Buckeyes with the ever-so-slight home-ice advantage.
