Jacks fall in series finale at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Thomas pitchers Riane Ritter and Max Skilbeck combined for 10 strikeouts and limited South Dakota State to two hits as the league-leading Tommies claimed the decisive game of a three-game Summit League baseball series with a 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Koch Diamond. St. Thomas ran its overall record to 19-14 overall and 13-4 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits dropped to 8-26 overall and 5-11 in league play. The Tommies got all the offense they would need in the first two innings. UST got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning as Ben Vujovich singled and stole both second and third base, scoring on an errant throw on his steal of third. UST loaded the bases the next inning on a hit, walk and hit batter to set up Max Moris, who notched a two-out single to center field to score both Tanner Recchio and Vujovich. Riane Ritter carried a shutout into the sixth inning, when SDSU tallied its lone run on a home run to left by Luke Luskey. It was Luskey's second home run of the series and league-leading 12th round-tripper of the season. The Jackrabbits' burst of momentum was short-lived, however, as St. Thomas responded with single runs in both the home half of the sixth and seventh innings. Zan Von Schlegell plated the sixth-inning run with a sacrifice fly and Matthew Maulik added a run-scoring single in the seventh after Vujovich created more havoc on the bases. Vujovich tallied two hits, stole three bases and scored three runs while Brigs Richartz led the Tommies' 10-hit effort with a 3-for-4 day at the Sintek posted the only other Jackrabbit hit, a single in the third inning. Ritter worked seven innings en route to the victory, striking out five and walking one. Skilbeck finished on the mound for the Tommies with five strikeouts in two hitless and scoreless frames. For SDSU, starter Owen Bishop was assessed the loss after walking three and surrendering three runs in only 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked three. Reece Arbogast finished the second inning before giving way to Jake Goble, who pitched the final six frames. Goble struck out four and did not walk a batter in his longest outing of the season UP NEXTThe Jackrabbits return home for a 3 p.m. game Tuesday afternoon against Northwestern (Iowa) at Erv Huether Field. ST. PAUL (SDSU) – South Dakota State rebounded from a series-opening shutout to claim a victory on Saturday against St. Thomas and force a rubber game on Sunday. The Jackrabbits fell 6-0 to the Tommies to begin the series, then ended Saturday's doubleheader with an 8-5 win at St. Thomas' South Field. Game One South Dakota State produced just five singles at the plate while St. Thomas scored six runs in the opening three innings en route to a 6-0 result. The Tommies scored a trio of runs in both the first and third innings, while recording six of their eight hits in the game across the first three innings, to jump ahead. South Dakota State left nine runners stranded on base over the course of seven innings. Mia Jarecki had three of the Jackrabbits' five hits. Madi Mangulis made the start for the Jacks in the circle and took the loss. Hailey Herman highlighted SDSU's pitching efforts with three shutout innings of relief. Game Two The Jackrabbits scored three runs over the last two innings to break up a tie and claim an 8-5 victory. SDSU jumped out to a 4-0 edge with four runs in the second frame. Alivya Bollen hit an RBI single, Akayla Barnard followed with an RBI double, then a two-run double off the bat of Emma Vike put the Jacks in Tommies scored two runs in the bottom of the inning before another RBI single by Bollen in the top of the fifth made it 5-2 in favor of the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State pitcher Sylvia Shromoff had a strong start in the circle before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. A three-run home run ended her day after 4 1/3 innings of work as the two sides stood tied at 5-5. Tayler Baker came on in relief and got SDSU out of the inning with the Tommies stranding runners on second and third. The sixth saw the leadoff batter in Jarecki get hit by a pitch. Vike crushed a pitch down the right-field line scoring Jarecki as her RBI triple put SDSU in front, 6-5. Vike then dashed home on an infield grounder and beat the throw to the plate, giving Brooke Dumont an RBI and the Jacks a 7-5 advantage. Barnard hit a solo home run in the seventh to give SDSU a three-run cushion. Baker was in line for the victory as the Jackrabbits brought Amanda Vacanti in to pitch in the sixth. Vacanti threw consecutive 1-2-3 innings to capture the first save of her college career. Vike, Barnard and Bollen had two hits apiece for the Jacks. Vike finished with three RBIs, while Barnard and Bollen each drove in two. Alli Boyle was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two walks. NOTES The Jackrabbits are now 21-19 overall on the season and 6-2 in Summit League play. The Tommies are 20-16 (5-3). St. Thomas' win was the first between the two sides during the Tommies' Division I era. SDSU stands at 9-1 all-time against St. Thomas with both members of the Summit League. Vike had a team-high nine-game hitting streak end to begin the series. Dumont's 25-game reached base streak continued through Saturday's doubleheader. Vacanti now has a team-low 3.40 ERA in 16 appearances this season. Shromoff follows her in ERA 3.99 across 26 1/3 innings. UP NEXTThe Jackrabbits and Tommies square off in the series finale Sunday. VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball split Friday's doubleheader with St. Thomas at Nygaard Field. The Tommies took the first game 6-4 in an 11 inning marathon of a game, while the Yotes responded in game two of the afternoon with an 8-6 win in the series finale. Game 1 – L, 6-4The Yotes ran into trouble in the top of the second, as the Tommies quickly loaded the bases with one out. St. Thomas plated the first run of the day with after drawing a walk. Edwards forced a groundout back to herself in the circle, getting the force out at home, but the Tommies brought in a second run via a hit by pitch in the next at-bat. The Yotes limited the damage, however, with a groundout to Brylee Hempey at second base. Rylie Jones led off the fifth with a bunt single and would find her way home on an RBI stand-up double from Sara Iburg in the next at-bat. An infield single from Abi Brown and throwing error by the shortstop would result in Iburg scoring and cutting the Tommies lead to one, 3-2. A Tatum Villotta groundout to second would move pinch runner Piper Ruhl over to third, and in the next at-bat Ella McGee's infield single knotted the contest at 3-3. The Tommies led off the seventh with a solo homerun over the left center field fence and would threaten to extend their lead, but the Yotes would strand a pair of runners on base. Abi Brown got the Yotes going in the bottom of the seventh with a double, and pinch runner Isabel Carda would move over to third on a Villotta groundout to the right side of the infield. With two outs, McGee came through for the Yotes with an RBI single through the left side to push the game to extra innings. After three straight scoreless frames in extra innings, the Tommies broke through in the 11th with a pair of two-out runs. Autumn Iversen reached on an error in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tommies Ella Cook ended the game with a strikeout. McGee had a career high three hits, her seventh multi-hit game of the year, and drove in two runs. Evans, Jones and Brown also had multiple hits. Edwards started in the circle and threw 8.0 innings. She had six strikeouts and allowed four runs. Madison Evans is tagged with the loss after 3.0 innings pitched in relief. Evans had two punchouts and allowed two earned runs. Game 2 – W, 8-6 (5 innings)The second game of the doubleheader would be called final after five fully completed innings with the Coyotes grabbing an 8-6 win. Laken Leinhard homered for the second time on the day in the top of the first to give UST an early lead. McGee moved into the leadoff spot for the Yotes in game two and immediately tied the game at 1-1 as she rounded the bases and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. The Yotes grabbed the lead later in the inning after a line drive up the middle from Jones drove in Delaney White from second. A leadoff double from the Tommies in the second inning would end up tying the game at 2-2 after a passed ball and a single from UST. Leinhard sent her third homerun of the day in the third to give the Tommies a 3-2 lead. The Yotes erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead with a 7-3 lead. Brown got the big inning started for USD with a leadoff home run over the left field fence to tie the game, her second of the season. Iversen singled in the next plate appearance, and Carey pushed the Yotes in the lead with a blast to left field for her first homer of the year. Villotta and White kept the run going for the Yotes as Villotta doubled down the right field line and was quickly brought home on an RBI single from White. With the bases juiced and one out, Iburg grounded out to third but brought White in from third to give USD a 7-3 advantage. After the Tommies got three runs back in the fifth, off a pair of homeruns, three straight singles from McGee, Villotta and White added an insurance run for the Yotes who held an 8-6 lead. Campbell German made quick work of the Tommies in the sixth with a three up, three down frame, and in the bottom half of the inning, play was suspended and eventually the game was called final due to weather in the area with the Yotes taking an 8-6 win. McKenna Young earned her ninth win of the season after going 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts. White went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Jones, Villotta, Brown and Carey all recorded two hits each. After securing two hits in game two, Villotta now sits with 199 career hits as a Coyote. The Coyotes move to 20-14 on the season and 3-3 in Summit League play. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — JJ White scored 29, Marquel Sutton totaled 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds and Omaha beat St. Thomas-Minnesota 85-75 on Sunday night in the championship game of the Summit League Tournament. The top-seeded Mavericks (22-12) had already earned the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament entering the game because the Tommies (24-10) — the No. 2 seed — are in their final year of postseason ineligibility after making a rare leap from Division III to Division I. The Mavericks will play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time after transitioning to D-I play in 2011. Omaha's 22 victories this season are its most since the move up. White and reserve Lance Waddles both scored 11 in the first half and combined to make 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range to guide Omaha to a 39-33 advantage. Sutton, the Summit League player of the year, had his eighth double-double this season by halftime with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sutton opened the second half with a dunk and White followed with a 3-pointer to push Omaha's lead to double digits. A Waddles 3-pointer gave the Mavericks their largest lead at 51-36 with 14 minutes remaining. St. Thomas got within six points four times, the final one at 79-73 on two Minessale free throws with 1:58 left. Sutton followed with two foul shots and White added a layup to wrap up the title. White made 10 of 14 shots with three 3-pointers, adding five assists for the Mavericks. Waddles hit four 3-pointers and scored 15. Minnessale had 20 points to lead the Tommies. Preview: Omaha, St. Thomas meet in Summit men's title game

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The top two seeds in the Summit League men's tournament will meet Sunday night for the chance to cut down the nets as regular-season champion Omaha faces No. 2 seed St. Thomas. The Mavericks rolled past South Dakota 100-75 in Saturday's first semifinal. The Tommies knocked off North Dakota 85-69 in to close out the night. Summit League Page — WHAT'S AT STAKE Omaha and St. Thomas are each looking for their first Summit League Tournament championship. However, the conference's bid to the NCAA Tournament is already locked up for the Mavericks because the Tommies are ineligible for the Big Dance due to still being in the transitionary period from Division III to Division I. The Tommies are in their fourth season in DI. The Mavericks are in their 13th season in the Summit and matched their best regular season in league play with a 13-3 mark this year as they claimed their first regular-season title. WHAT IT MEANS 'This was the goal that we set out to at the beginning of the season,' Omaha head coach Chris Crutchfield said. 'They've played their butts off. It'll be a proud moment.' 'There is a certain element of this is pretty incredible,' St. Thomas head coach John Tauer said. 'At the start of the year, if you get to play the last possible day you can, that's a pretty cool accomplishment.' PLAYERS TO WATCH Marquel Sutton (Omaha) — Sutton won the Summit League Player of the Year award this season. He was the only player in the league to rank in the top five in scoring (second at 19.1), rebounding (second at 7.7) and FG% (fourth at 48.6%). For the tournament, the senior forward is averaging 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Miles Barnstable (St. Thomas) — Barnstable leads five Tommies who are averaging at least 9.9 points a game with 14.8 points a night, which ranks ninth in the conference. He is averaging 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds over UST's first two tournament wins. Tony Osburn (Omaha) — After being held to one point in the Mavs' quarterfinal win, Osburn went off for 30 points in the semifinals. He was a blistering 8-for-9 from 3-point land. Kendall Blue (St. Thomas) — Blue leads the Tommies in scoring this tournament with an average of 18 points per game. He netted a team-best 21 in the semifinals and scored 15 in the quarters. SERIES HISTORY This game marks the ninth meeting between the two teams as St. Thomas leads the series 6-2. They split in the regular season. The Mavs won 89-78 on Jan. 23, and the Tommies returned the favor with a 95-84 victory on Feb. 15.
