VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — South Dakota softball split Friday's doubleheader with St. Thomas at Nygaard Field. The Tommies took the first game 6-4 in an 11 inning marathon of a game, while the Yotes responded in game two of the afternoon with an 8-6 win in the series finale. Game 1 – L, 6-4The Yotes ran into trouble in the top of the second, as the Tommies quickly loaded the bases with one out. St. Thomas plated the first run of the day with after drawing a walk. Edwards forced a groundout back to herself in the circle, getting the force out at home, but the Tommies brought in a second run via a hit by pitch in the next at-bat. The Yotes limited the damage, however, with a groundout to Brylee Hempey at second base. Rylie Jones led off the fifth with a bunt single and would find her way home on an RBI stand-up double from Sara Iburg in the next at-bat. An infield single from Abi Brown and throwing error by the shortstop would result in Iburg scoring and cutting the Tommies lead to one, 3-2. A Tatum Villotta groundout to second would move pinch runner Piper Ruhl over to third, and in the next at-bat Ella McGee's infield single knotted the contest at 3-3. The Tommies led off the seventh with a solo homerun over the left center field fence and would threaten to extend their lead, but the Yotes would strand a pair of runners on base. Abi Brown got the Yotes going in the bottom of the seventh with a double, and pinch runner Isabel Carda would move over to third on a Villotta groundout to the right side of the infield. With two outs, McGee came through for the Yotes with an RBI single through the left side to push the game to extra innings. After three straight scoreless frames in extra innings, the Tommies broke through in the 11th with a pair of two-out runs. Autumn Iversen reached on an error in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tommies Ella Cook ended the game with a strikeout. McGee had a career high three hits, her seventh multi-hit game of the year, and drove in two runs. Evans, Jones and Brown also had multiple hits. Edwards started in the circle and threw 8.0 innings. She had six strikeouts and allowed four runs. Madison Evans is tagged with the loss after 3.0 innings pitched in relief. Evans had two punchouts and allowed two earned runs. Game 2 – W, 8-6 (5 innings)The second game of the doubleheader would be called final after five fully completed innings with the Coyotes grabbing an 8-6 win. Laken Leinhard homered for the second time on the day in the top of the first to give UST an early lead. McGee moved into the leadoff spot for the Yotes in game two and immediately tied the game at 1-1 as she rounded the bases and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. The Yotes grabbed the lead later in the inning after a line drive up the middle from Jones drove in Delaney White from second. A leadoff double from the Tommies in the second inning would end up tying the game at 2-2 after a passed ball and a single from UST. Leinhard sent her third homerun of the day in the third to give the Tommies a 3-2 lead. The Yotes erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead with a 7-3 lead. Brown got the big inning started for USD with a leadoff home run over the left field fence to tie the game, her second of the season. Iversen singled in the next plate appearance, and Carey pushed the Yotes in the lead with a blast to left field for her first homer of the year. Villotta and White kept the run going for the Yotes as Villotta doubled down the right field line and was quickly brought home on an RBI single from White. With the bases juiced and one out, Iburg grounded out to third but brought White in from third to give USD a 7-3 advantage. After the Tommies got three runs back in the fifth, off a pair of homeruns, three straight singles from McGee, Villotta and White added an insurance run for the Yotes who held an 8-6 lead. Campbell German made quick work of the Tommies in the sixth with a three up, three down frame, and in the bottom half of the inning, play was suspended and eventually the game was called final due to weather in the area with the Yotes taking an 8-6 win. McKenna Young earned her ninth win of the season after going 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts. White went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Jones, Villotta, Brown and Carey all recorded two hits each. After securing two hits in game two, Villotta now sits with 199 career hits as a Coyote. The Coyotes move to 20-14 on the season and 3-3 in Summit League play. Next up for the Yotes is a midweek doubleheader in Des Moines, Iowa to face Drake on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.

Chet Holmgren Roasts Anthony Edwards As The Past Comes Back To Bite Timberwolves Star

Chet Holmgren Roasts Anthony Edwards As The Past Comes Back To Bite Timberwolves Star originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The OKC Thunder beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma to proceed to the NBA Finals after over a decade. The Thunder's resilience on defense to put the clamps on Anthony Edwards for most of the series made this a lesson to remember for Edwards and the Timberwolves. To ensure that Edwards doesn't forget who beat him, Chet Holmgren, the Thunder player, further added salt to his wounds. Advertisement Holmgren took to social media and subtly reminded Edwards about his own words from back in February 2025. He posted his pictures from the WCF on Instagram with the caption: "Welcome home Chet" Holmgren was born and brought up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For him, even an away game in this series was a home game. But the victory over Edwards was the cherry on the cake. The caption was a reference to Edwards' words from February after a poster dunk over Holmgren. It was a subtle reminder from Holmgren that Edwards may have gotten the highlight and the win in the regular season, but when the stakes were at the highest and it mattered the most for them to win, it was Holmgren and his team, the Thunder, who came out on top. Advertisement The Thunder won the seven-game series in just five games (4-1). Holmgren averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in those games. Meanwhile, Edwards averaged 23.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in the same series. While the numbers may indicate that Edwards was more impactful and better, what matters the most in basketball is team success, and Holmgren ensured that better than Edwards. Edwards himself even acknowledged during the series that Holmgren was the difference maker for them in Thunder's Game 4 win at Minnesota. Of course, since the league's reigning MVP is on the Thunder (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander), Holmgren's numbers are nowhere close to Edwards' as he's not the No. 1 option on the team, however, it was Holmgren who got the last laugh. What Anthony Edwards Said To Chet Holmgren In February In a regular-season Timberwolves vs. Thunder game in February, Edwards posterized Chet Holmgren in the process of leading Minnesota to a 116-101 win. After the game, Timberwolves media caught up with Edwards to ask him about the poster dunk on the Minnesota native. Advertisement "All I was thinking for real was, he wasn't denying me because usually they deny me. And then Jaden caught it, I'm like "Let me see that, Slim!" and just ripped quick. And all I was thinking was like, 'he's not going to jump' and he [Holmgren] came over like he was a little scared, I'm not going to lie. I don't think he jumped to block it, he just wanted to be on the reel. Shout out to Chet, welcome home, baby." This did not age well for Edwards as Holmgren seemingly used his words to roast his team's loss in the Western Conference Finals. Five takeaways from LSU baseball's super regional win vs. West Virginia

Five takeaways from LSU baseball's super regional win vs. West Virginia LSU baseball is headed to Omaha. After sweeping West Virginia in the Baton Rouge Super Regional, LSU punched a ticket to the College World Series. The Tigers erupted for 16 runs in Game 1 before plating 12 more in Game 2. It was just what we wanted to see from the LSU offense after the Tigers' bats were inconsistent at points this spring. Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson didn't pitch at the elite level they did in the regional, but both were good enough to get the wins. Anderson allowed six earned runs, but made it through seven innings in Game 1. Eyanson held WVU to three runs and struck out seven of the course of five innings in Game 2. Tigers' head coach Jay Johnson has now led LSU to Omaha in two of his four years in Baton Rouge. LSU's last CWS trip came in 2023, when the Tigers won it all with Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews. Before LSU continues its quest for another national title, here are five takeaways from LSU's Super Regional win. 1. LSU responded in the seventh inning LSU controlled the game early, scoring six runs in the first two innings. WVU began to stage a comeback. The Mountaineers scored three runs in the fourth and plated another in the fifth. Then, LSU had a response of its own. LSU scored six runs in the seventh inning, putting the game out of reach. It started with a two-run single off the bat of Chris Stanfield. Not long after, Derek Curiel scored on a throwing error. Steven Milam kept the rally going with an RBI double. Jake Brown capped it off with a two-run shot to center field. West Virginia had the momentum entering the seventh, and the Mountaineers were a couple of swings away from tying it up. Good teams respond like LSU did in the seventh. 2. Anderson and Eyanson were good enough Good pitchers find a way to do enough even when they don't have their best stuff. Neither Kade Anderson nor Anthony Eyanson had their best, but they combined to pitch 12 innings and both got the win. Anderson held WVU to one run through five innings, which allowed LSU to build a substantial lead. West Virginia put up some runs in the later innings, but Anderson hung in there and threw 109 pitches, keeping LSU's bullpen rested. On Sunday, Eyanson held WVU to three runs in five innings. Between the regional and the super regional, Eyanson allowed just three runs over 13.2 innings. LSU can't expect eight shutout innings from Anderson and Eyanson every night, but the Tigers proved they can win a different style of game vs. West Virginia. 3. Steven Milam was a star Steven Milam had ups and downs in the regular season, but he's been a star for LSU in the NCAA Tournament. He stayed hot vs. West Virginia. On Saturday, Milam came to the plate with LSU up 3-1 and the bases loaded. Milam put one in the bleachers to give LSU a 7-1 lead. Milam walked twice and scored two runs. On Sunday, Milam had two more extra-base hits with four RBI. Again, he walked twice and scored twice. If Milam is going to hit like this, it changes the outlook for LSU's lineup. It gives the Tigers another all-around bat in the middle of the lineup. "He will play baseball for a very long time if he takes the caliber of at-bats that he has," Jay Johnson said of Milam last weekend. 4. Potential emergence of Cooper Williams Aside from Casan Evans, LSU's bullpen has struggled in recent weeks. Even Zac Cowan has faltered after being one of the nation's most effective relievers for most of the year. LSU needed another bullpen arm to emerge -- it might just be Cooper Williams. Williams, a true freshman, was ranked as the No. 12 left-handed pitcher in the 2024 class by Perfect Game. He began his career without allowing an earned run in his first 12 appearances, but didn't see a ton of high leverage spots in the regular season. After LSU struggled to get outs last Sunday vs. Little Rock, Williams entered and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings. Then, a week later vs. West Virginia, Johnson called on Williams with the tying run at the plate. Williams delivered and gave LSU 2.2 innings, allowing just one run. That'll play. In 19.2 innings, Williams owns a 1.83 ERA this year. LSU will need a strong effort from the freshman in Omaha. 5. LSU looks like a complete team The Super Regional was LSU at its best. The Tigers have not played two straight complete games like vs. a quality opponent all year. Sure, the Tigers have found ways to win, but LSU was dominant in every phase of the game vs. the Mountaineers. This team is good enough to go all the way in Omaha. We had questions about the lineup entering the weekend. Those were answered. We know guys like Derek Curiel and Daniel Dickinson are going to produce, but when Milam, Brown, and Josh Pearson are showing off the power too, it's hard to find outs vs. this group. And Tiger fans should feel better about the bullpen now, too. LSU finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the polls for a reason. When this squad plays to its potential, it's the best in the country.
