Narrikup Sports and Community Group volunteers raise more than $2000 for Cancer Council at Biggest Morning Tea
More than 70 people attended the Narrikup Sports and Community Group's Biggest Morning Tea on May 28, raising more than $2000 for the Cancer Council. It was the seventh year the group had run the event with NSCG organiser Wendy Miell saying it was a really special morning. 'We were overwhelmed and are so grateful for the support we received from every corner of the community,' she said. The final total raised was $2093.50 and it came from a combination entry fees and a raffle featuring 27 prizes, the most popular of which was a ute load of firewood. Entertaining the participants was Albany musician Tony King while special guest Bruce Beamish, from the Cancer Council in Albany, spoke about the work done by the organisation to support those affected by the disease. Volunteers served a spread of tea and coffee along with a selection of delicious homemade cakes. Ms Miell said there was also an online fundraising page for those who could not come but wanted to contribute. 'Every act of kindness, whether it was baking a cake, donating a prize or simply showing up, helped create something really special,' she said.

North Charleston Rallies for Beloved Community Leader
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)–The parking lot of Revive Charleston on Remount Road was filled with purpose and unity early Saturday morning as dozens of residents gathered for a community yard sale benefiting a man who's spent decades serving others. The event, called 'Spring Clean for a Cause,' featured rows of tents offering everything from children's clothing to home decor. But beyond the bargains was a deeper mission supporting Tony King, a longtime mentor, youth leader, and outreach volunteer who recently experienced a life-altering health crisis. 'Tony, he's a brother to me,' said Steve Fowler-Vaughn, pastor of Revive Charleston. 'He's poured into this community for decades. Food banks, church events, youth mentorship—you name it. Now it's our turn to be there for him.' King, a fixture in Lowcountry outreach for over 40 years, has helped lead programs like Angel Tree, back-to-school drives, and community food initiatives. But after a recent leg amputation and cardiac arrest, he's had to step back from the work he's loved. That's when community members like event organizer Lanetra King stepped in with a plan. 'We wanted to take the spirit of spring cleaning and turn it into something meaningful,' Lanetra said. 'This was about love, support, and showing how much this community cares.' All items at the yard sale were donated, and 100% of the proceeds will go toward making Tony King's home handicap accessible and more comfortable as he continues recovery. Organizers are encouraging continued support. To donate or learn more, visit Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The simple 50p store cupboard staple to help keep your home pest-free this spring
A GARDENING expert has shared a simple 50p store cupboard staple to help keep your home pest-free. With spring bringing in warmer weather and longer days, many of us will be spending more time in the garden. 2 But as well as more barbecuing opportunities, higher temperatures are also the perfect breeding ground for pests like flies and slugs. Insects like moths, carpet beetles and spiders often sneak indoors causing damage to homes and belongings. Thankfully, one penny pinching pest expert has come up with a simple solution, that won't break the bank. Tony King, owner of pest control firm the Pied Piper, has insisted that whilst chemical detergents are effective in deterring creepy crawlies there are other more simple, cost-effective treatments too. Natural oils, for example, can be just as efficient. Spraying peppermint oil on surfaces is "surprisingly potent" and can deter spiders from coming in through the windows. Cleaning expert and owner of Flooring King, Liam Cleverdon explained: 'Chemical-free doesn't mean ineffective. "Natural oils like peppermint are surprisingly potent - you can mix 10–15 drops with water and spray around doors, windows, and cracks to deter spiders." Other methods include using a combination of household herbs, which cost as little as 50p, to prevent insect entering homes. These include rosemary, mint, and basil - items you'll likely already have in your pantry. 'That time of year again' - Peter O'Mahony's captivating garden update includes hilarious tip for parents Liam recommends placing the herbs in small sachets and tucking them into room corners, drawers, or under furniture. These can provide a "highly budget-friendly solution" to any insect woes. He added: "Dab a few drops of essential oils onto cotton pads and position them strategically throughout your home." However, for more severe infestations, the pest experts suggest resorting to harsh chemicals and sprinkling them on carpets. Liam said: 'If you're not opposed to more lethal methods, boric acid can be an effective last resort. "Sprinkle it on carpets, leave for a few hours, then vacuum to kill beetles, larvae, and eggs."
