LOUIS (AP) — Ernie Clement homered and Spencer Turnbull worked two scoreless innings to win his Toronto debut as the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Clement finished with three hits but did not take the field in the ninth at third base after suffering an apparent leg injury. He dove for a grounder in the eighth and needed some attention but finished the inning. Advertisement Clement's fourth homer gave Toronto a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Toronto won for the seventh time in eight games and is 22-10 over its last 32. Turnbull (1-0) worked the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two. He signed with Toronto last month and began the season in the minors. Turnbull played five seasons with Detroit and was with Philadelphia last year. Yariel Rodríguez pitched the ninth for his first major league save. The Cardinals lost their fourth straight. Matthew Liberatore (3-6) and gave up five runs, three earned, and eight hits in five innings. Yohel Pozo's second homer gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the second. Brendan Donovan leaves Cardinals' loss early with toe discomfort

(AP Photo/Scott Kane) ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals utilityman Brendan Donovan left Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with left toe discomfort. Donovan, who has mainly played second base this season but was the leftfielder on Tuesday, left the game after striking out on a nine-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning in the Cardinals' 10-9 loss. Advertisement 'It's kind of the joint in his big toe,' Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. 'You can see that last at-bat, he couldn't even get off his backside there. It was hurting him pretty bad so we took him out.' Donovan received treatment but did not have an x-ray after the game. He is considered day to day. 'I was running around in the outfield, and it just started bugging me, and then it kind of just got progressively worse, and then it just got real grumpy at me,' Donovan said. Donovan said that there wasn't one moment that he hurt it, that it was more of a repetitive use injury. 'It's on my left foot, so kind of that foot that I tend to rotate off of,' Donovan said. 'I think that's kind of what led to me coming out of the game. … Just kind of sleep on it, reevaluate it tomorrow, and then go from there.' Advertisement It would be a blow to the Cardinals if Donovan misses any time. Donovan won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022 and is putting together his best season at the plate hitting .310 with four home runs and 26 RBIs as the No. 3 batter in the St. Louis order. 'Donny's a big part of what we're about here,' Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas said. 'You know, the way he can move around the diamond and obviously, you know, be a really consistent anchor in that lineup as far as driving the ball and getting on base and driving runs in. Create Account Given the five-year deal worth a cool $92.5-million he signed this off-season in free agency, Anthony Santander isn't going anywhere any time soon. He is going on the 10-day injured list, a move the Blue Jays revealed in the hours leading up to Friday night's first pitch against the visiting Athletics. To date, the Jays have not received much from the investment they made into the switch-hitting slugger, whose struggles at the plate prompted the club to recently give Santander an off-day to reset, only to admit he was dealing with a sore shoulder and later a hip issue. For the record, Santander's activation to the injured list was necessitated because of left shoulder inflammation. He had an MRI on it done on Thursday. Please try again This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays recalled outfielder Alan Roden from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Despite dealing with his various health woes, at no point, until now, Santander was never placed on the IL, even though voices outside of the club were growing louder as his productivity at the plate faltered. Earlier this month, when the Jays were on a West Coast trip, Santander suffered the shoulder injury in a series against the L.A. Angels. The injury occurred when he crashed into the stands down the line in right field in pursuit of a fly ball. When the Jays got their hands on Santander — a move many in baseball endorsed, by the way — the thinking was the franchise had finally found a slugging piece to hit in the middle of the order. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. In 50 games, Santander, who hit a career-high 44 homers last season with the Baltimore Orioles, has gone deep six times. His 55 strikeouts does lead the Blue Jays, a stat no one envisioned when he arrived in town. If he had double-digit homers, perhaps all of those K's would be tolerated. On one side, credit goes to Santander for trying to play through the injury, even though he wasn't producing much in his at-bats. On the other, one is left to wonder why such a move to go on the IL wasn't made sooner. The team, meanwhile, continues to evaluate whether anything played out to make the shoulder worse in the wake of the initial setback, and if rest is the best course of action or resorting to a cortisone shot. In other IL-related developments, veteran right-hander Max Scherzer (thumb) completed a live bullpen session Friday at the Rogers Centre under the auspices of club GM Ross Atkins, manager John Schneider and pitching coach Pete Walker. Many of Scherzer's teammates were on hand as well. By all accounts, the experience went well. As Scherzer has constantly reminded anyone who would listen, the biggest hurdle involves how the thumb responds in the ensuing days. Schneider told reporters at Globe Life Field in Arlington that Bo Bichette was being kept out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers with what the team described as lower-back tightness. Create Account With that notable absence — and a desperate need to manufacture runs somewhere, somehow — Schneider shook up the order for Wednesday's contest with Daulton Varsho leading off, followed by Anthony Santander, Vlad Guerrero Jr. and George Springer hitting cleanup. The Jays offence has been uneven at best for much of the season, but has been particularly troubled through the first five games of this road trip through Tampa and Texas, in which they've scored just four runs and been shut out twice while going 1-4. Bichette had struggled through the first five games of the road trip with just one hit, while his team has been outscored 22-4. RECOMMENDED VIDEO A 2-0 loss on Tuesday was particularly gruesome, a game in which they got the leadoff runner aboard in four of the first six innings and had runners on base in all but the third and the ninth innings. Worse, Jays hitters had leadoff doubles in each of the first two innings and couldn't get home as Jays batters have gone 1-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the first two games against the Rangers. As miserable as the road trip has been, the Jays have a chance to win the three-game series against the Rangers on Wednesday and an opportunity to creep back to within a game of .500. Paxton Schultz will get the start in what is expected to be a bullpen day for the Jays, who are just 10-16 on the road this season and 26-28 overall. It won't be an easy task for the Toronto offence to get on track as they face yet another top-tier starter in Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle, who is 5-2 with a tight 1.80 ERA. After a return to Toronto in the wee hours of Thursday, the Jays begin a four-game weekend series against the Athletics on Thursday night at the Rogers Centre.
