Nicki Minaj praises Lana Del Rey's new song amid Ethel Cain feud references

Nicki Minaj is playfully obsessed with Lana Del Rey's latest lyrical jab in her upcoming album, sharing her infatuation via an exuberant tweet. Minaj confessed, 'I've been singing 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post' all morning. Help!!!!!' She marveled at how the melody, instruments, background vocals, and mixing are so intoxicating that she can't stop humming—even though she doesn't know Ethel Cain or own the post referred to. I've been singing 'Ethel cain hated my instagram post' all morning. Help!!!!! And something about the Waffle House & a picture w/some boy? But how can a melody & instruments & background vocals & the mixing be so good that I'm walking around all day talking about a person named… — Nicki Minaj (@NICKIMINAJ) August 15, 2025 The lyric originates from a teased snippet of Del Rey's new song—possibly titled Track 13 or 'All About Ethel'—which opens: 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it's cute reenacting my Chicago pose.' The reference appears to call back to a 2022 Instagram photo Del Rey shared with then-partner Jack Donoghue outside Chicago's Cook County Jail, which Ethel Cain mirrored in her own post soon after. The two artists have since exchanged subtle jabs online, with Cain claiming Del Rey blocked her and Del Rey accusing Cain of body-shaming her through side-by-side images. Minaj didn't stop there. In a follow-up tweet, she joked about Del Rey's unapologetic style, writing: Remember that time Lana dissed all the girlies but we had no idea why but none of us said anything back? Lmaooooo not we let Lana walk in the lunchroom & run EVERYBODY pockets wit no weapon & no gang & said not one thing about it. Lmfaooooo. AYO🤣 I fkng love this shit yo. 😩😂 — Nicki Minaj (@NICKIMINAJ) August 15, 2025 Between the biting lyric, the real-life drama, and Minaj's playful commentary, the track has already cemented itself as a pop culture moment — and it's not even officially out yet.

Tagging Jack Antonoff as the song's producer, Lana's fans were left stunned to realise she was taking a jab at Ethel. In the teased lyrics, she can be heard singing: "Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it's cute reenacting my Chicago pose." Many fans were quick to assume that Lana was making a dig at Ethel for posing for photos with Lana's ex-boyfriend, Jack Donoghue, a musician in the band Salem. Ethel posted a photo alongside Jack that was very similar to one shared by Lana whilst she was in a relationship with the hunk. Not much was known about Lana and Jack's romance but they were believed to be romantically involved between 2022 and 2024. Whilst Jack and Ethel also appeared to hang out with one another at one time, it has never been clarified if they dated. Jack is also understood to have dated Julia Fox and Courtney Love as well as sharing photos to his own social media accounts kissing different men in the past. However, Lana continued to fuel rumours of a rift with Ethel with even more lyrics which appeared to be directed at her. One part of the track contained the words: 'The most famous girl at the Waffle House / I don't regret it / The most famous girl at the Waffle House.' Lana Del Rey cries on stage at opening night of her first stadium tour in Cardiff This appeared to be in reference to a 2023 New York Times profile piece on Ethel which referred to her in the headline as "the most famous girl at the Waffle House". Ethel soon confirmed the feud with her own social media post when she took to Instagram to confirm she had been blocked by her music rival. In a post she shared to her story, Ethel wrote: "Update: Lana Del Ray has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram." The drama continued when Lana went on to leave a length Instagram comment about what was behind her sudden feud with her musical counterpart. Lana explained: 'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at. "Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.'

Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain feud explained: Are indie music girls fighting over a boy? Diss track and Instagram block fuel drama

While diss tracks are usually a rapper's playground, Lana Del Rey seems to be taking a page out of that playbook — only her target isn't a hip-hop heavyweight but fellow indie darling Ethel Cain. From sly shade to the ultimate social media power move (yes, she actually hit the block button), Lana's moves have left fans both shocked and wildly curious. Why is she beefing with Cain in the first place? And how did this niche indie spat become one of the most unexpectedly entertaining pop culture feuds of the week? Keep scrolling, because the tea here is oddly specific and surprisingly messy. Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey's 2025 feud explained: From past tensions to recent drama The sudden feud between Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey has set social media ablaze, igniting one of the rare but fiery clashes in the indie scene, which is known for keeping it peaceful. What started as subtle tension has now spiralled into a full-blown online standoff, complete with direct shade and even an Instagram block. Below, we break down everything you need to know—from the history between Cain and Lana to the turning point that brought their differences into the spotlight and why this unexpected clash has been reignited in 2025. Lana Del Rey shades Ethel Cain with her new song Lana Del Rey caught everyone off guard with her recent Instagram post that quickly set the internet on fire. She uploaded a short snippet of Track 13 from her upcoming album—previously known as The Right Person Will Stay but still untitled for now—and it didn't take long for fans to start dissecting every word. The opening lyrics were enough to send social media into speculation, with many convinced she was taking aim at Ethel Cain. She also tagged Jack Antonoff as her collaborator on the track, and the snippet's lyrics have pretty much left everyone stunned. The opening line goes, 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Thinks it's cute reenacting my Chicago pose' — a direct callout that had fans instantly pausing and replaying. Are the girls fighting over a boy? Fans are convinced the lyric is a nod to the fact that both Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey have eerily similar photos with Jack Donoghue — Lana's ex-boyfriend and one-half of the underground music duo Salem. While the imagery has fuelled plenty of side-eye and speculation, there's no actual proof that Cain and Donoghue were ever officially a couple. Lyrics leave little to the imagination In another part of the track—which some Twitter users claim is titled All About Ethel (though that's still unconfirmed)—Lana sings, 'The most famous girl at the Waffle House / I don't regret it / The most famous girl at the Waffle House.' Fans immediately connected the line to Ethel Cain, who was profiled by The New York Times in an article headlined 'The Most Famous Girl at the Waffle House.' The reference hits even harder considering Lana herself pulled a quirky stunt in 2023 by actually working a shift at a Waffle House. Ethel Cain addressed the Lana Del Rey beef on her story What some thought was just a cheeky lyrical jab quickly escalated when Ethel Cain took to her Instagram story, revealing that Lana Del Rey had blocked her. But the drama didn't stop there. Lana later weighed in herself, responding to news outlets covering the feud. In a comment, she wrote, 'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters, making constant comments about my weight. I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life, I was definitely disturbed.' Ethel Cain is having a sad girl summer In July 2025, old social media posts from Ethel Cain's late teens resurfaced, showing her using racist language, making offensive jokes, and wearing provocative clothing, sparking widespread backlash. The controversy deepened with criticism over past album imagery resembling a real missing child poster. On July 9, Cain issued a 2,000-word statement admitting the posts were hers, apologising 'from the bottom of my heart,' and explaining they came from a time when she was intentionally provocative online while dealing with personal trauma. She denied serious allegations like creating child pornography or promoting abuse and claimed the resurfacing was part of a coordinated, transphobic smear campaign that included hacking and doxxing. Coming back to her Lana feud, it was a rare, direct statement from the Margaret singer, and one that made it clear this wasn't just about a couple of shady lines in a song. Will Cain respond with another diss track? We'll have to wait, but this is definitely shaping up to be one of the most famous feuds in the indie music scene in recent times.

Taylor Swift on 'New Heights': Meeting Travis Kelce, Chiefs Fandom, New Music, More

National Football League Taylor Swift on 'New Heights': Meeting Travis Kelce, Chiefs Fandom, New Music, More Published Aug. 13, 2025 7:39 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Taylor Swift shined as this week's special guest on "New Heights," discussing learning the ins and outs of the NFL, becoming a Kansas City Chiefs fan, reclaiming her master recordings, wrapping up her latest world tour and the release of her highly anticipated upcoming 12th studio album, "The Life of a Showgirl," in Wednesday's new episode. This was Swift's first appearance on the mega-popular podcast, which is hosted by her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and his brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. Here are the standout moments from Wednesday's episode: Meeting Travis "This podcast has done a lot for me," Swift said with a grin "I owe a lot to this podcast. This podcast got me a boyfriend ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app about two years ago. … It was such a wild, romantic gesture. … I was like, 'If this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.'" Travis famously mentioned on "New Heights" that he went to one of Swift's shows at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in July 2023 and tried to connect with her at the show but wasn't able to. Rumors quickly began to swirl that word had gotten back to Swift and that the two had met and ultimately sparked a relationship that summer, but the pair didn't go public until the fall, when Swift attended her first Chiefs game on September 24, 2023. ADVERTISEMENT Fans had been strongly anticipating this episode's release ever since "New Heights" dropped its initial promotional graphic on Monday teasing a "very special" surprise guest. Later that day, Swift was confirmed as the guest with another promo post — a clip featuring her and Travis sitting side by side in the podcast studio. In the very early hours of Tuesday morning, "New Heights" dropped a third promo post that nearly broke the internet — a clip from the episode in which Swift revealed the completion of her 12th studio album to the Kelce brothers. Here are some fun facts about Wednesday's "New Heights" episode featuring Swift: The episode dropped on August 13. Thirteen is widely known as Swift's lucky number, as she has incorporated it into various aspects of her career for decades. Swift was born on the 13th, turned 13 on Friday the 13th and had her first album go gold in 13 weeks. Her first hit song had a 13-second intro, and she often puts her most significant songs as Track 13 on all her albums. This season serendipitously marks Travis' 13th in the NFL. During the podcast, Jason wore a navy blue T-shirt from The Eras Tour, Swift's iconic 149-show concert tour that spanned 51 cities, 21 countries and five continents from March 2023 to Dec. 2024. Jason reportedly attended at least six shows during The Eras Tour, while Travis reportedly attended at least 14. One of the most noteworthy shows was Swift's second show in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 11, 2023, when she famously changed the lyrics in her finale song "Karma" from "Karma is the guy on the screen" to "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs." Travis watched from the VIP tent with Swift's dad, Scott. Another was when Travis made a surprise on-stage appearance during Swift's third show at Wembley Stadium in London on June 23, 2024 The initial "New Heights" promo graphic featured a glittery orange background, which fans were quick — and correct — to connect to upcoming new music. Each of Swift's 10 albums released before The Eras Tour is tied to a specific color: mint green ("Taylor Swift"), gold ("Fearless"), purple ("Speak Now"), red ("Red"), turquoise ("1989"), black ("Reputation"), pink ("Lover"), gray ("Folklore"), peach ("Evermore") and navy ("Midnights"). Prior to Wednesday, orange hadn't yet been used to represent her discography, but it's officially the featured color for TS12, as the same glittery orange background from the "New Heights" promo is being used as the banner on her official online store and as the sneak-peek color for the vinyl version of her new album . Oh, and if you Google "Taylor Swift" right now, orange confetti drops from your screen. Swift grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania, just 90 minutes outside Philadelphia. Her song "Gold Rush" includes a lyric about an "Eagles T-shirt," which she clarified during her stop in Philly on The Eras Tour in February is about the football team, not the rock band. With 14 Grammys, 12 number-one singles and the highest-grossing tour of all time under her belt, Swift is one of the most decorated, highest-certified and best-selling music artists of all time. Travis is a highly decorated star in his own right. A three-time Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowler, Travis holds a handful of NFL records, including most consecutive and overall seasons with 1,000 receiving yards by a tight end (seven) and most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season (1,416). Jason is also a Super Bowl champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, and he's widely considered to be a future first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. The Kelce brothers launched "New Heights" in Sept. 2022, and the show saw a huge rise in popularity in the summer of 2023 at the start of Travis and Swift's relationship. The podcast has grown to over 2.85 million subscribers as of Aug. 13 and gained over half a million new YouTube subscribers after Swift's new album announcement on Aug. 12. The "New Heights" promo video of Swift announcing her album got 175 million views on Instagram. Within the first minute of Wednesday's episode's release on YouTube, 720,000-plus viewers were tuned in to watch the live premiere. Over a million people were tuned in and watching the episode within five minutes of it being live. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
