2.5 Million Vehicles Expected To Enter Penang Ahead Of Aidiladha

GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- Penang Police expect 2.5 million vehicles to enter the state ahead of the Aidiladha celebration this Saturday. State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the figure was based on projections by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of vehicles passing through the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from May 26 to June 8. 'In addition, the increase is likely attributed to the current fruit season in Penang,' he said when contacted by Bernama. To prepare, the JSPT launched an operation dubbed 'Op Lancar' from May 31 to June 8 to ensure smooth traffic flow during this period, he added. Hamzah said sufficient personnel have been deployed to patrol and monitor areas prone to congestion and accidents. Meanwhile, he noted that the police have identified several traffic hotspots where control efforts will be focused, including the Penang Bridge, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, and areas in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT). In this regard, he advised motorists to exercise caution by avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving and ensuring their vehicles are in good condition for safe travel. -- BERNAMA

Melaka to improve lighting at blackspot areas to prevent road crash

MELAKA: The Melaka government is identifying accident-prone 'blackspot' areas, particularly in rural locations, as part of efforts to prevent recurring road tragedies. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that statistics by the state police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) showed that 68 fatal road accidents and 7,871 cases of road crashes were recorded from January to April this year. 'Therefore, the state government will improve the lighting in the affected areas to improve the safety of road users,' he said at the state administration's monthly assembly at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) Ayer Keroh here today. Ab Rauf said that 131 cases of housebreaking and 16 cases of child abuse were also recorded during the same period. He said Mobile Road Block operations in targeted areas, as well as the Integrated Crime Prevention Operation, which involves the cooperation of other enforcement agencies, were being carried out to increase the effectiveness of monitoring and control in high-risk areas. This resulted in the arrest of 73 suspects in 58 housebreaking cases, he said. Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said the state government is committed to strengthening the education sector through various programmes and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of learning and facilities at all levels. 'Alhamdulillah, the federal government has approved projects to renovate and upgrade 25 schools in Melaka. The projects will be implemented in stages,' he said. The schools include Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bandar Hilir, SK Bukit Beruang, SK Bukit Rambai, SK Limbongan, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tinggi Perempuan, SMK Bukit Baru and SMK Ghafar Baba.

Asean Summit 2025: PLUS advises highway users to plan ahead due to road closures

KUALA LUMPUR: PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) advises highway users to plan their journeys in advance due to a series of phased road closures in conjunction with the 46th Asean Summit. In a statement on Thursday (May 22), PLUS said several stretches along its highways would be temporarily closed, following instructions from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the police, to facilitate the movement of international delegates throughout the summit. "The staggered road closures will be implemented from May 23 to 26 starting at 7am, and on May 28 starting at 8 am," the statement said. The affected routes include the stretch from KLIA to Putrajaya via the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE), Subang to Jalan Duta via the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) and Sungai Buloh to Jalan Duta via the North-South Expressway. PLUS said it has taken the necessary steps to ensure smooth traffic operations during the affected period and would work with the authorities to facilitate the movement of summit delegates. Highway users travelling to or from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Subang Air Force Airbase are advised to plan ahead to avoid delays. PLUS also urged motorists to follow the instructions of traffic personnel on-site and to use alternative routes where necessary to prevent congestion. For the latest traffic updates, users may refer to the PLUS app, X @PLUSTrafik, Variable Message Signs (VMS) at selected highway locations, official JSPT/police social media platforms, or navigation apps for more efficient route planning. – Bernama
