Melaka to improve lighting at blackspot areas to prevent road crash
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that statistics by the state police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) showed that 68 fatal road accidents and 7,871 cases of road crashes were recorded from January to April this year.
'Therefore, the state government will improve the lighting in the affected areas to improve the safety of road users,' he said at the state administration's monthly assembly at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) Ayer Keroh here today.
Ab Rauf said that 131 cases of housebreaking and 16 cases of child abuse were also recorded during the same period.
He said Mobile Road Block operations in targeted areas, as well as the Integrated Crime Prevention Operation, which involves the cooperation of other enforcement agencies, were being carried out to increase the effectiveness of monitoring and control in high-risk areas.
This resulted in the arrest of 73 suspects in 58 housebreaking cases, he said.
Meanwhile, Ab Rauf said the state government is committed to strengthening the education sector through various programmes and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of learning and facilities at all levels.
'Alhamdulillah, the federal government has approved projects to renovate and upgrade 25 schools in Melaka. The projects will be implemented in stages,' he said.
The schools include Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bandar Hilir, SK Bukit Beruang, SK Bukit Rambai, SK Limbongan, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tinggi Perempuan, SMK Bukit Baru and SMK Ghafar Baba.

Safe Internet Campaign empowers kids to navigate online dangers
KUALA NERANG: A total of 101 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lamdin recently took part in the Safe Internet Campaign, aimed at raising awareness about online risks and threats among children. Organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the campaign is designed to enhance students' understanding, particularly those under the age of 13, of responsible internet use and the functions of various online applications. This edition of KIS focused on the Siamese community, as SK Lamdin has a majority of students from the Thai ethnic group. The programme utilised the Teaching Session Plan (RSP) module for two age categories: Primary School Students aged 7–9 and those aged 10–12. SK Lamdin's Senior Administrative Assistant, Cikgu Amran Salleh, said the campaign effectively improved students' awareness about safe and responsible internet use, especially for children under 13 whose cognitive development is still maturing. "A total of 10 facilitators from the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in the Padang Terap Cluster were involved in conducting the module activities," he said at the closing of the campaign, which was also attended by Kedah MCMC deputy director Sharliza Saary. Cikgu Amran said the campaign also addressed the dangers of unregulated internet usage while promoting more positive and productive alternatives for students. "This initiative has successfully met its objectives by increasing students' understanding of digital literacy, age limits for social media use, the risks of cyberbullying, and safety practices when using the internet," he said. Prior to that, it was discovered that 78 students at the school had active social media accounts. However, following the awareness sessions, nearly all of them agreed to refrain from using social media until they reach the age of 13. At the end of the programme, Cikgu Norhazifah Mohd Noor was named the K-DAT KIS Icon in the Teacher Category, while Plai Foon A/P Mongkon was awarded the same title in the Student Category. – BERNAMA

Headmaster dies in Bera road accident, motorcyclist killed by falling tree
KUANTAN: The headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Durian Hijau in Jerantut was killed today when his car skidded off the road and crashed near SK Guai in Bera. Bera police chief Supt Zulkiflee Nazir said Mohd Sabri Bakar, 59, from Temerloh, was driving a Proton Preve to his brother's house in Kampung Guai when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle at about 6.30 pm. He died at the scene. 'Members of the public pulled the victim out before the car caught fire and was 80 per cent destroyed,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. In a separate incident, Zulkiflee said a 65-year-old motorcyclist, Kamar Seman, was killed when a tree fell on him while he was riding along KM34 Jalan Kuala Bera-Chenor around 7 pm. Both bodies were sent to Bera Hospital for post-mortem. - Bernama
