Saints' former 1st-round pick carted off in preseason opener vs. Chargers
The post Saints' former 1st-round pick carted off in preseason opener vs. Chargers appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints' offensive line might have suffered a significant blow in the team's preseason opener. After playing just one series against the Los Angeles Chargers, left guard Trevor Penning suffered an injury deemed significant enough to warrant the cart. Penning did not need any attention on the field and instead headed straight toward the medical tent once he reached the sidelines. Moments later, the training staff removed his shoes and carted him into the locker room, according to sideline reporter Jeff Nowak. The Saints did not confirm the severity of the issue or the cause of it. Nowak noted that Penning was walking under his own power, suggesting that it might have merely been a precautionary measure taken during the preseason. However, the removal of his shoes and using the cart is enough to raise a red flag. Penning, who started the game at left guard, was likely not returning to the game regardless. The Saints pulled many starters after just one series, but notably left quarterback Spencer Rattler in as they continue to seek answers under center. Trevor Penning's injury puts wrench in Saints' offensive line plan The Saints initially drafted Penning in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, hoping for him to be their long-term answer at left tackle. His progression has not gone as planned, but the Northern Iowa alum finally emerged as a full-time starter in 2024. However, ahead of his fourth season, first-year head coach Kellen Moore decided to move Penning from tackle to guard. The move was somewhat of a success, with Penning earning a spot atop the Saints' first unofficial depth chart. He remained in the starting lineup over veterans Shane Lemieux and Dillon Radunz. The move to guard ideally addresses the speed issue that plagued Penning's early career. He allowed five sacks in 2024 and allowed a whopping 54 pressures, by far the most on the team. Most of his issues came from his failure to set the edge and getting beaten around the outside. While his pass-blocking was an issue, Penning was actually an above-average run-blocker in 2024. He received a 70.1 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, the 36th-highest among the league's tackles. That strength of his game should carry over to his new position, even with Penning now facing bigger and stronger defenders on the interior. Saints' Trevor Penning gets optimistic diagnosis after concerning injury
The post Saints' Trevor Penning gets optimistic diagnosis after concerning injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints got banged up during their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, but they finally got some good news on one of the injuries. Former first-round pick Trevor Penning was carted off during the game, leading many to assume the worst, but he got a positive diagnosis on Tuesday. Penning is dealing with a foot injury and is expected to only miss a few weeks, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. This is about as good of an update as could've been hoped for considering the visual of Penning leaving the game on a cart. Unfortunately, all of Penning's teammates didn't get as fortunate. Center Will Clapp is officially out for the season with a foot injury of his own that he sustained on Sunday. The Saints gave up a lot of draft capital to go up and get Penning with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he has had a rocky career thus far. He came into the league as a tackle, but has struggled to give New Orleans consistent production on the outside. This season, Penning has shifted inside to guard and was having a very strong training camp on the inside. That has given the Saints optimism that he can be a stalwart up front long into the future, and they will get a chance to see him at that spot this season when he recovers from this relatively short-term injury. Having a healthy offensive line will be paramount for the Saints and new head coach Kellen Moore this season if New Orleans wants to provide a good ecosystem to grow for whichever young quarterback that it decides to go with. Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough are battling it out for the starting job during the preseason, with the rookie showing some signs of promise despite Rattler holding a slight lead in the competition at the moment. Regardless of who ends up on top of the depth chart, both signal callers will be relieved that Penning should be back on the field before too long despite this injury. New Orleans Saints OL Trevor Penning could miss season opener with turf toe
Trevor Penning has turf toe, which often takes four to six weeks to heal. Week 1 is less than four weeks away. The Arizona Cardinals play the New Orleans for their season opener on September 7. The Saints, already expected to be a team that will struggle, might be missing a starting offensive lineman, although it is far better than initially believed. Starting left guard Trevor Penning was carted off the field in the Saints' preseason game last weekend but he avoided major injury. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it was only a minor foot inury and will miss a few weeks. That could, though, include the start of the season. The Cardinals and Saints play their opener in three and a half weeks. According to Nick Underhill, Penning has turf toe, which can take four to six weeks to recover from, although it is possible to return earlier. Penning moved from tackle to guard this offseason, as the Saints drafted Kelvin Banks in the first round and make him their starting left tackle. New Orleans could have rookie Tyler Shough as their starting quarterback, so losing Penning, even for a game or two to start the season, is less than ideal. Fifth-year guard Dillon Radunz is currently listed as the backup left guard on the Saints' depth chart. He started 26 games over the last two seasons. It could be a great opportunity for the Cardinals' remade defensive line to do some damage. Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 70
Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 70 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Sunday means 70 days separate us from now until the 2025-26 season opener for the New Orleans Saints. Advertisement New Orleans will open their year at home against the Arizona Cardinals. This is their 59th year of NFL existence, but first season under new head coach after the team finished 5-12 a year ago. One of the returning faces for the Saints in 2025 is offensive lineman Trevor Penning, who wears jersey number 70. A first round choice in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Northern Iowa, Penning is entering his fourth year with the team but is expected to play guard, his third different position. The 19th overall pick in 2022, Penning is the second highest drafted New Orleans player to wear 70. Here is a look at all Saints to wear that jersey. However, he didn't appear in any games through his two seasons with the franchise. Sam Holden was the first player drafted by the Saints to wear number 70 during a regular season game. Holden was a second round choice in 1971. He played in only nine games as a rookie with no starts. It was also the only season of a one-year career in the NFL. Advertisement Craig Robinson was the first to play in multiple games for more than one year wearing No. 70 for New Orleans. A 16th round draft pick in 1971, Robinson played in 19 games for the team between the 1972 and 1973 campaigns. 1992 Topps Stadium Club football card of New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Chris Port. That player was Jim Rourke in 1985, who started five of 13 game appearances in his only year with New Orleans. Bill Contz followed him up by playing three years and 27 games with 16 starts as a Saint. Kevin Haverdink played three years with New Orleans. However, he wore 70 only during his rookie year of 1989 during 16 games and 7 starts at left tackle. Chris Port arrived as a 12th round choice in 1990. He'd quietly go on to play five years with the Saints, playing in 69 games and making 50 starts. Advertisement Amazingly, Port's five years and 69 games are the most for any New Orleans player who has worn the number 70. Only Marcus Price, who played in 19 games without a start over two years, wore 70 for the Saints between 1996 and 2005. After starting at right tackle as a rookie, Brown would be the team's starting left tackle for the next three years. Brown missed the 2009 season with injury before departing in free agency. Prior to that, he started all of his 58 games with New Orleans over a four year stretch, making two Pro Bowls in the process. Brown's tenure with the team is the second longest of any player who has worn number 70. He is also the highest drafted player by New Orleans to wear this number. Advertisement There wasn't a defensive player to wear 70 for the Saints until Mitchell Loewen in 2017. He was with the team for three years, but appeared in just four games. Christian Ringo followed Loewen as No. 70 on the defensive line, playing in 18 games with four starts in two years. The Saints used the 19th pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Northern Iowa Panthers tackle Trevor Penning. A foot injury sustained in the preseason of his rookie year kept him sidelined for the first 11 games and limited him to only one start. Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images Penning struggled tremendously as the left tackle to open the 2023 season. In fact, he was benched in the year's sixth game and only saw limited playing time the rest of the year. Advertisement Moved to right tackle in 2024, Penning's play improved slightly and he started all 17 games. After this year's first round pick of Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and 2024 first rounder Taliese Fuaga, it looks like Penning will be moved inside to guard this season. Now in a contract year, Penning's play at another new position will likely dictate whether he remains in a New Orleans #70 jersey beyond 2025-26.
