New Orleans Saints OL Trevor Penning could miss season opener with turf toe
The Arizona Cardinals play the New Orleans for their season opener on September 7. The Saints, already expected to be a team that will struggle, might be missing a starting offensive lineman, although it is far better than initially believed.
Starting left guard Trevor Penning was carted off the field in the Saints' preseason game last weekend but he avoided major injury. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it was only a minor foot inury and will miss a few weeks. That could, though, include the start of the season. The Cardinals and Saints play their opener in three and a half weeks.
According to Nick Underhill, Penning has turf toe, which can take four to six weeks to recover from, although it is possible to return earlier.
Penning moved from tackle to guard this offseason, as the Saints drafted Kelvin Banks in the first round and make him their starting left tackle.
New Orleans could have rookie Tyler Shough as their starting quarterback, so losing Penning, even for a game or two to start the season, is less than ideal.
Fifth-year guard Dillon Radunz is currently listed as the backup left guard on the Saints' depth chart. He started 26 games over the last two seasons.
It could be a great opportunity for the Cardinals' remade defensive line to do some damage.

Broncos trade WR Devaughn Vele to the Saints for a pair of draft picks
Sean Payton is doing business with his former team. Payton's Broncos are trading wide receiver Devaughn Vele to the Saints for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick, the teams announced. The emergence of Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant made Vele expendable. In last week's preseason game against the Cardinals, Bryant caught four passes for 70 yards and Franklin four for 67 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos drafted Vele in the seventh round in 2024, and he caught 41 passes for 475 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games as a rookie. Vele, who is 6 foot 5, adds height to a relatively small Saints' wide receivers room.

Saints' trade for talented Broncos WR Devaughn Vele is clouded by injury concern
For a team with a bad history of managing wide receivers with knee injuries (remember Cameron Meredith?), the New Orleans Saints aren't shying away from them. On Wednesday the Saints agreed to send two draft picks to the Denver Broncos in exchange for second-year wide receiver Devaughn Vele -- who missed mandatory minicamp in the spring and has had regular rest days at Broncos training camp while dealing with a knee injury. Vele also missed four games last year with a ribs injury, but thankfully that isn't related to his knee issue. The Saints wouldn't have made this trade if they weren't comfortable in taking a risk on the 27-year old. "Part of it is the maintenance on his knee, making sure he's fresh," Broncos coach Sean Payton said earlier this summer, when asked about Vele's absences. "It's a little bit easier to maintain in-season than when you're just stacking day after day in training camp. So we'll continue to find his spots. He's a big target on third down and in the red zone.' Hopefully it isn't a big deal. Vele only played in one of Denver's first two preseason games so far, but that may or may not be related. And Payton is right about his efficiency on critical downs: Vele caught 12 of his 16 targets on third downs as a rookie, converting 11 first downs; in the red zone, all six of his receptions (on seven throws) moved the chains or scored a touchdown. And in contested-catch situations, Pro Football Focus charting found that he went 9-of-15, turning 50/50 balls into 60/40 opportunities. He knows how to use his 6-foot-5 frame. Let's see if it can make a difference.

Former NFL Quarterback Derek Carr Quickly Lands New Job
Former NFL Quarterback Derek Carr Quickly Lands New Job originally appeared on The Spun. Back in May, the New Orleans Saints learned that veteran quarterback Derek Carr is retiring from the NFL. It only took a few months for him to write the next chapter of his career. Carr, 34, was set to enter his third season with the Saints before announcing his retirement. The veteran quarterback decided to hang up his cleats after learning he had a torn right labrum and "significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff." The former second-round pick from Fresno State finished his NFL career with 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions. 'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' Carr said in a press release. 'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. 'It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.' Since Carr retired after just two seasons with the Saints, he had to give up $30 million this offseason. It was a move that certainly sat well with the fan base in New Orleans. Fortunately for Carr, he'll have the chance to make plenty of money through a different profession. According to Rashad Milligan of Carr will be a studio analyst for a Week 1 showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. That game will be exclusively on YouTube TV. Carr's former teammate will join him on YouTube TV. Former Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu is also expected to be an analyst for the Chiefs-Chargers game in Brazil. Mathieu announced his retirement right before the start of training camp. The former LSU star had 838 tackles, 100 pass break-ups, 36 interceptions and seven forced fumbles during his incredible NFL career. His biggest highlight was winning a Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Will Carr be a great analyst? Troy Aikman and Tony Romo have called plenty of marquee games for FOX and CBS, respectively. They know how to diagnose certain defensive packages and are able to predict plays before they even happen. It wouldn't shock us at all if Carr ends up being a great analyst. In fact, we expect him to be quite sharp. After all, he's not even a full year removed from the NFL. He should know what schemes the Chiefs and Chargers are running considering the Saints played against both teams during the 2024 season. Let's also not forget that Carr's older brother, David, has been an NFL Network analyst since 2016. He'll be able to receive a few pointers along the way.
