Saints' trade for talented Broncos WR Devaughn Vele is clouded by injury concern
Vele also missed four games last year with a ribs injury, but thankfully that isn't related to his knee issue. The Saints wouldn't have made this trade if they weren't comfortable in taking a risk on the 27-year old.
"Part of it is the maintenance on his knee, making sure he's fresh," Broncos coach Sean Payton said earlier this summer, when asked about Vele's absences. "It's a little bit easier to maintain in-season than when you're just stacking day after day in training camp. So we'll continue to find his spots. He's a big target on third down and in the red zone.'
Hopefully it isn't a big deal. Vele only played in one of Denver's first two preseason games so far, but that may or may not be related. And Payton is right about his efficiency on critical downs: Vele caught 12 of his 16 targets on third downs as a rookie, converting 11 first downs; in the red zone, all six of his receptions (on seven throws) moved the chains or scored a touchdown. And in contested-catch situations, Pro Football Focus charting found that he went 9-of-15, turning 50/50 balls into 60/40 opportunities. He knows how to use his 6-foot-5 frame. Let's see if it can make a difference.

4 Trades Have NFL World Buzzing On Wednesday Night
4 Trades Have NFL World Buzzing On Wednesday Night originally appeared on The Spun. The 2025 NFL regular season is a little more than tow weeks away, as the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, Sept. 4. While one week remains in the preseason, teams are finalizing their rosters ahead of Week 1. NFL teams have been quite busy in this department, too. Four trades have taken place on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, August 20. It's rare to see this much movement at this stage of the preseason, but we got a lot of action. The Chiefs, Broncos and Browns, among other teams, were all involved in trades on one of the final days of the preseason. The Chiefs, 49ers, Broncos, Saints, Vikings, Jets and Browns all made trades on Wednesday. In total, four trades were made. Here's the full breakdown: Chiefs traded WR Skyy Moore and a 7th round draft pick to the 49ers for a 6th round pick. Broncos traded WR Devaughn Vele and a 7th round draft pick to the Saints for a 4th round draft pick. Vikings traded DT Harrison Phillips and a 7th round draft pick to the Jets for two 6th round draft picks. The Browns traded DT Jowon Briggs and a 7th round draft pick to the Jets for a 6th round draft pick. More NFL trades could be coming NFL teams have to cut down their rosters on Tuesday, August 26. The 32 teams across the league have to get down to 53 players by that Tuesday. Instead of cutting a player, teams will look to trade them, perhaps for NFL Draft pick compensation - as we saw in all four trades on Wednesday. New York Jets beat writer Antwan Staley noted this possibility on Wednesday night. "BTW, NFL cut down day in August 26, so expect more trades to come in the next few days," he wrote. He added: "It is a good time of the year because the season is close but it sucks for some players who will be looking for work after Tuesday." The possibility of a blockbuster trade or two remains, too None of the four trades made on Wednesday would qualify as blockbusters, but there's a growing possibility that we could get one before Week 1. Both Cowboys star Micah Parsons and Bengals star Trey Hendrickson have asked out, as they're seeking new contract extensions that their respective teams have yet to give them. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that the Bengals have been talking to other teams for a while now about a possible Hendrickson trade. "Teams that have recently inquired about Bengals star Trey Hendrickson were told Cincinnati's asking price included a young defensive player and a 2026 first-round pick, according to league sources. The player heading back does not have to be a pass rusher," she reported. Meanwhile, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Cowboys and Parsons seem headed for a divorce, which could spark a trade possibility. "It feels more likely that these sides are heading for a divorce today," Schefter told the Pat McAfee Show. More movement could be coming ahead of the first week of the 2025 NFL regular season in September. 4 Trades Have NFL World Buzzing On Wednesday Night first appeared on The Spun on Aug 21, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 21, 2025, where it first appeared.

49ers may be the new NFL home for former NAIA cornerback Dallis Flowers
No doubt remains as to who the San Francisco 49ers will start at cornerback come Week 1. Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green are the shoo-ins. If either miss time, as both have this training camp, the next man up is more a mystery. Some dude named Dallis Flowers could be the answer. 'I see a young man who's going for it,' defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said. Flowers is still auditioning for a role. That process, particularly for an undrafted free agent out of a college called Pittsburgh State (in Kansas), never actually ends. He learned the hard way. The NAIA product opened the 2023 season, his second in the NFL, as a starting cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts. Four weeks into the regular season, he stood with a 70.6 coverage grade on Pro Football Focus that ranked 23rd among 73 cornerbacks who played at least 100 coverage snaps. An Achilles tendon injury took away everything. 'As I was getting back, the vibes were just — it was different,' Flowers said. 'That's all I'm gonna say.' When the 49ers signed Flowers, 28, to a one-year deal this spring, it was Gus Bradley, the coordinator behind the 'Legion of Boom' secondary in Seattle, who underlined his second chance. Bradley left the Seahawks before their back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in the mid-2010s for a promotion. Multiple stops removed from his failed stint as Jaguars head coach, including one as the Colts' defensive coordinator, Bradley landed in Santa Clara to be the assistant head coach of defense for the 49ers. Shortly after Bradley was hired in February, Flowers put pen to paper in May. The week Flowers was waived, Bradley sounded regretful: 'Loved Dallis, loved coaching him and what he was all about. He's a great man. And this business is unfortunate that way.' Flowers sought temporary shelter on the practice squad for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers about a week after being waived by the Colts. He even suited up for a couple games late in the season. Now, a little more than a workweek away from Tuesday cuts, he finds himself on the fringe of the 53 names to be listed on the 49ers active roster. He is used to it. In the 2022 draft, Flowers was not one of the 262 players selected. The Colts then signed him along with 21 other undrafted free agents with a dream and a one-year contract. Flowers was a camp body. Perhaps a practice squad piece, at best. 'I wasn't supposed to make that team at all,' Flowers said. 'But I did.' As a rookie, the especially athletic 6-foot-1 cornerback made his money on special teams. His 31.1 yards per kick return average led the NFL. Keisean Nixon, a first-team AP All-Pro kick returner that season, ranked second (28.8). Flowers, with a 78-inch wingspan, ran a 4.40 40 and posted a 10-foot-11-inch broad jump at his pro day. His coachability helped. Everyone loves a coachable underdog. 'Like my mom and dad always told me growing up, you got two ears and one mouth,' Flowers said. 'You should listen twice as much as you talk.' Bradley saw something in Flowers. Still does. Since training camp began, Flowers has flashed enough athleticism to receive a steady dose of second-team reps. He also received countless snaps with the first team when a bum hamstring sidelined Green for multiple weeks. Darrell Luter Jr. and Tre Brown, who has missed a string of practices with a heel injury, make up his competition. Saleh said since the start of camp the CB3 job was up for grabs. An NAIA no-name could be the guy. And he knows it. 'I know I can play ball,' Flowers said. 'I'm not here for no reason, you know what I'm saying? I'm an NAIA product. People don't even know what NAIA is.'

Saints acquire second-year wide receiver Devaughn Vele from Broncos for a pair of draft picks
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos are alleviating some of the crowding in their wide receiver room by sending second-year pro Devaughn Vele to the New Orleans Saints for a pair of draft picks. The Broncos will get a fourth-round selection in next year's draft and a seventh-rounder in 2027 in exchange for Vele, who caught 41 passes for 475 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie last season.
