Dan Lanning, Oregon Suffer Troubling Loss With Former 5-Star Recruit

Dan Lanning, Oregon Suffer Troubling Loss With Former 5-Star Recruit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dan Lanning is set to enter his fourth season with the Oregon Ducks, leading the Big Ten team into the 2025 college football season. Oregon has improved each season under coach Lanning and continues to take the necessary steps to set itself up for a national title. Ducks have consistently been recruiting alongside some of the biggest names in college football, such as Alabama and Georgia, winning battles off the field. One of Lanning's biggest recruiting wins during his time at Oregon came when the Ducks landed five-star prospect Trey McNutt. McNutt, a top-rated defensive back, was set to enter his freshman season at Oregon, but his future took an unfortunate turn just weeks before the start of the season. According to On3's Pete Nakos, Trey McNutt has broken his right leg. Trey McNutt committed to the Oregon Ducks as a five-star prospect, ranked as the No. 2 safety and the No. 31 overall player in the nation, per 247Sports. McNutt chose to continue his football journey with Dan Lanning, committing to Oregon over Texas A&M, USC, Florida and other powerhouse programs in the college football landscape. He committed to Oregon in August 2024 and eventually enrolled in the Big Ten program in December 2024. The Oregon Ducks finished the last college football season with a 13-1 record. They suffered a loss to the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff after an incredible regular season. Oregon's loss came in the Rose Bowl, led by Heisman Trophy candidate and quarterback Dillon Gabriel. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Oregon Ducks 5-star freshman Trey McNutt suffers broken leg

The Oregon Ducks suffered an unfortunate injury in fall camp last week, leading up to the first game of the season on August 30 against the Montana State Bobcats. Ducks Wire has confirmed that 5-star true freshman safety Trey McNutt suffered a broken right leg, knocking him out of play for the time being. On3's Pete Nakos first reported the news. The severity of the fracture is not known, but McNutt is expected to be sidelined for the foreseeable future, with a chance that he is healthy enough to return before the end of the season. McNutt was one of three 5-star players whom the Ducks signed in the 2025 class. The 247Sports Composite rated him as the No. 31 player in the class and the No. 2 safety in the nation. While many true freshmen tend to redshirt in their first year at the collegiate level, McNutt was one of a handful of players who were expected to get some valuable snaps in his first year with the Ducks. Although the injury is unfortunate, Oregon remains in a good position at the safety spot, led by Purdue transfer Dillon Thieneman. The Ducks also have guys like Kingston Lopa, Peyton Woodyard, and Aaron Flowers competing for starting spots, and there are high expectations for the back-end of Oregon's secondary. Oregon Ducks 5-star commit draws Ken Griffey Jr. comparison after OT7 showing

The Oregon Ducks scored a major recruiting win in June, landing 5-star safety Jett Washington, the No. 18 player in the 2026 class. Washington is the highest-ranked safety the Ducks have ever had committed, and he is certainly living up to the hype so far this summer, with an impressive showing this past weekend at the OT7 camp. With a long list of the top-ranked players in the nation getting together for the elite 7-on-7 camp, Washington is standing out, being named the "Alpha Dog" for 247Sports on Saturday. With multiple interceptions, Washington is drawing comparisons to Ken Griffey Jr. in his prime, mainly for his ability to patrol the secondary — or centerfield, in Griffey's case — and make tough plays look easy. Advertisement "The way he breaks on the ball, the way he takes away his entire side of the field, we were talking over the on the sideline, it's kind of like watching Ken Griffey (Jr.) in his prime, patrolling the center field," 247Sports' Brandon Huffman said. "That's what Jett Washington looks like in that back-half. ... Jett looks like a million bucks out there, but he plays like it too." The commitment from Washington is huge for Dan Lanning and his team, who now have back-to-back years of bringing in a 5-star safety, with Trey McNutt coming as a member of the 2025 class. While we are still months away from signing day, it appears that Washington is locked in with the Ducks, and it will be fun to watch how he performs and rises over the next several months before putting pen to paper with Oregon in December. Kingston Lopa says 5-star freshman Trey McNutt will ‘be a dude' for Oregon

Kingston Lopa says 5-star freshman Trey McNutt will 'be a dude' for Oregon The days of freshmen coming into a football program wide-eyed and green around the gills are long over. Many freshmen now enroll early, fully participate in spring practice and are expected to perform immediately. In short, they're more prepared to play now than ever before and one of those freshmen for the Oregon Ducks in defensive back Trey McNutt. According to redshirt freshman defensive back Kingston Lopa, McNutt is even more prepared to play than he was at this time last year. 'Man, Trey McNutt, he's gonna be a dude. For sure, he's gonna be a dude," Lopa said. "He's young, but I kind of look at it, I kind of see myself in him from last year. So that's why I really try to help him and try to make sure, like because he's ahead of where we were, where a lot of us freshman last year were like around this time, so he's really trying to get him to be at the level that we're trying to be at.' Lopa didn't play a whole lot last season, as he retained his redshirt status from his freshman year, but he did play in the Big Ten Championship Game and gain valuable experience that will help him this season with a young, but talented, defensive unit. McNutt, out of Cleveland, was rated the No. 21 recruit nationally and the top safety in the country by Rivals and with as young as the defensive back room is at Oregon, he could see some significant time on the field in 2025 if McNutt shows he's capable of handling it. He might be that "dude" sooner rather than later.
