Oregon Ducks 5-star freshman Trey McNutt suffers broken leg

USA Today20 hours ago
The Oregon Ducks suffered an unfortunate injury in fall camp last week, leading up to the first game of the season on August 30 against the Montana State Bobcats.
Ducks Wire has confirmed that 5-star true freshman safety Trey McNutt suffered a broken right leg, knocking him out of play for the time being. On3's Pete Nakos first reported the news.
The severity of the fracture is not known, but McNutt is expected to be sidelined for the foreseeable future, with a chance that he is healthy enough to return before the end of the season.
McNutt was one of three 5-star players whom the Ducks signed in the 2025 class. The 247Sports Composite rated him as the No. 31 player in the class and the No. 2 safety in the nation. While many true freshmen tend to redshirt in their first year at the collegiate level, McNutt was one of a handful of players who were expected to get some valuable snaps in his first year with the Ducks.
Although the injury is unfortunate, Oregon remains in a good position at the safety spot, led by Purdue transfer Dillon Thieneman. The Ducks also have guys like Kingston Lopa, Peyton Woodyard, and Aaron Flowers competing for starting spots, and there are high expectations for the back-end of Oregon's secondary.

Oklahoma Sooners beat out Texas Longhorns for 2026 5-star defensive end

The Oklahoma Sooners landed one of the best prospects in the 2026 recruiting class on Tuesday, earning a commitment from ESPN five-star defensive end Jake Kreul. Kreul chose the Oklahoma Sooners over the Texas Longhorns and the Ole Miss Rebels. Kreul announced his commitment on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN. An IMG Academy product, Kreul joins former teammates David Stone and Jayden Jackson in Todd Bates and Miguel Chavis' defensive line room and will have an opportunity to make an instant impact in 2026. Kreul's a dynamic rusher off the edge with a big-time motor and an advanced set of pass rush moves. He can win with speed and athleticism and has the power to push offensive tackles into the backfield with a bull rush. Kreul's a complete defensive end with the length and the strength to set the edge in the run game. He had a total of 36 Power Four offers, with 13 coming from SEC schools and eight more from Big Ten schools. Kreul is the No. 22 player in the class according to ESPN and No. 61 according to 247Sports. He's one of the most polished pass rushers in the class, and with his size and strength, would have an opportunity to play early in his career. He's an elite player with the ability to be a difference maker against the run and as a pass rusher. He has 36 Power Four offers. Any team would be thrilled to land a player with his skill set. The Oklahoma Sooners will add Kreul to a class that also includes four-star defensive end prospect Daniel Norman and three-star edge Matthew Nelson. Oklahoma has an intriguing group of pass rushers that will be on the roster in 2026, but nobody that's established themselves as a bona fide defensive end. Unless Taylor Wein, Danny Okoye, or Adepoju Adebawore have a big year for the Sooners in 2025, the door will be open for Kreul to find a way into the defensive end rotation on day one. Pair of Florida Gators named to 2025 Bednarik Award preseason watch list

The Maxwell Football Club recently released its preseason watch list for the 2025 Chuck Bednarik Award, which included a pair of Florida football players. Defensive tackle Caleb Banks, along with edge defender Tyreak Sapp, were both named to the prestigious projection of college football's most outstanding defensive players. Last year, Banks played in 12 games — starting in 10 — totalling 21 tackles, 10 of which were solo tackles and seven tackles-for-loss, while also recording 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and recovered one fumble. So far this preseason, he has also earned a mention on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, which is awarded to the best defensive player in college football. Sapp played in all 13 games with nine starts in 2024, leading the team with seven sacks, 13 tackles-for-loss and two forced fumbles while also earning the highest PFF grade among all qualified Florida players with 90.4 — ranking him eighth highest among all FBS edge rushers and fifth highest among all SEC edge rushers. That was the highest ranking of any Florida defender since Jonathan Greenard in 2019, who posted a PFF ranking of 90.5. About the Bednarik Award Established in 1995, the Chuck Bednarik Award is a prestigious honor in college football, awarded annually to the most outstanding defensive player. This accolade recognizes exceptional talent, tenacity, and impact on the defensive side of the game. Chuck Bednarik, a legendary player for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1949 to 1962, is celebrated for his distinctive contributions to the sport. Renowned for his versatility, Bednarik was the last player in NFL history to play both offense and defense full-time. His remarkable career includes two NFL Championships and ten First-Team All-Pro selections, underscoring his dominance and versatility on the field. Bednarik's legacy is further cemented by his enshrinement in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. Steelers HC Mike Tomlin believes 2025 defense will rewrite history

The hype behind the 2025 Steelers defense is reaching historic levels — literally, if you ask head coach Mike Tomlin. On Tuesday's airing of 102.5 DVE, Tomlin gave his honest opinion on the 2025 ceiling for the Steelers defense — sharing that this All-Pro-filled unit is capable of creating history. "We feel really good about the prospects of this group," Tomlin said. "We gotta write that story, but we've got enough talent, we've got enough schematics to do big, big things. And when I say big things, I'm talking about historic things." T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Cameron Heyward represented one of the NFL's best pass-rushing units — but the recent additions of first-round DL Derrick Harmon and All-Pro CBs Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey truly transform this defense on paper from elite to record-setting. The history in question isn't about becoming one of the greatest units statistically — it's about leaning on this stacked defense to bring a record-seventh Lombardi home to the Steel City of Pittsburgh.
