Former MPs, ex-min in race for AIADMK RS seats; one candidate likely to be an SC
Chennai: Hectic parleys are underway within the AIADMK as several leaders, including former MPs Anwhar Raajhaa and S Semmalai, and former minister D Jayakumar, are seeking nominations to the Rajya Sabha. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is considering their requests and has called meetings with district secretaries and functionaries on Thursday and Friday. "No decision has been taken yet on the candidates. One of them will likely be from the Scheduled Castes," said a senior leader. Anwhar Raajhaa reportedly met EPS on Wednesday night to lobby for a nomination. The former minority wing leader gained prominence when he opposed the BJP govt's Triple Talaq bill. "The party lost its minority vote base to the opposition after striking an alliance with the BJP. Choosing a leader from the minority community will send a signal to the public," said a minority wing leader. The AIADMK has 62 MLAs and can expect the backing of four MLAs each from the BJP and O Panneerselvam's faction. This means the party is positioned to comfortably win two seats. A senior leader said, "The announcement of nominees is unlikely to be made this week as the notification for the election will be issued only on June 2."

MP CM Yadav congratulates PM Modi for 11 years of governance, historic decisions
New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for completing 11 years of governance, marking the anniversary of the Modi-led government. Yadav praised the PM for making historic decisions that have shaped India's political and economic landscape. As June 9 approaches, marking the completion of 11 years of Modi's government, CM Yadav hailed the leadership for overseeing major policy reforms and strategic decisions. He specifically highlighted decisions such as the outlawing of Triple Talaq, the construction of the Ram Mandir, border security initiatives against China, surgical strikes (2016), airstrikes in Pakistan, and the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST). 'June 9 marks the completion of 11 years of PM Modi's government - it's a kind of achievement. I congratulate PM Modi for not only forming the government for three consecutive terms but also making historic decisions - be it Triple Talaq, Ram Mandir and carrying out surgical strike, air strike and the recent operation inside Pakistan; and also to confront China at the borders, including implementing GST,' Yadav told reporters in Delhi. He also praised PM Modi for making the decisions to make India the 4th largest economy in the world. Talking about the preparations for Environment Day on June 5, he highlighted the Jal Ganga Sanrakshan Abhiyan, a water conservation campaign and how the state government is making efforts for conservation. 'June 5 is an important day for Jal Ganga Sanrakshan Abhiyan. It's Environment Day as well, and the state is making efforts to conserve our environment,' he said. Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh CM had come to Delhi to attend NITI Aayog's 10th Governing Council Meeting, and also to attend the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) conclave of Chief Ministers and Deputy CMs. Over 20 Chief Ministers and 18 Deputy Chief Ministers from various states gathered in New Delhi for the conclave, held under the leadership of PM Modi. The meet included a significant discussion on commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, declared on June 25, 1975 and also passed two resolutions; one on praising the armed forces for Operation Sindoor, and for conducting the caste census. Leaders resolved to mark the anniversary in remembrance of the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a period that exposed citizens to widespread political turmoil and suppression of civil liberties. Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda addressed a press conference after the conclusion of the meeting and stated that Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, was highly praised by multiple leaders with the bravery of the armed forces being highly appreciated. The resolution on the caste census was also passed in the conclave, with the leaders praising the decision of PM Modi to conduct the caste enumeration exercise, while also affirming that this was not done due to 'caste politics' but to ensure that the deprived, oppressed and exploited are brought to the mainstream. Vijay Shah remark row: Congress protests outside Raj Bhavan demanding dismissal of M.P. Minister
The Congress on Friday (May 16, 2025) protested outside the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal demanding the dismissal of Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah over his recent inflammatory remarks on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi even as top BJP leaders maintained that the party will follow court orders in the matter. A delegation of more than 15 Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, called on Governor Mangubhai Patel to give him a memorandum and press for their demands. Later, the MLAs in black attires staged a demonstration outside the Governor's House. An FIR was filed against Mr. Shah late on May 14 for allegedly calling Colonel Qureshi 'sister of the terrorists' of Pahalgam attack, after the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo moto cognizance of the matter. The court set a four-hour deadline and specified the sections under which the Tribal Affairs Minister was to be booked. However, the next day, the High Court expressed its dissatisfaction over the contents of the FIR. It said the report did not mention Mr. Shah's May 12 speech which was an evidence, and added that it would monitor the investigation. Meanwhile, State Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda sparked another controversy on Friday (May 16, 2025) with his statements in Jabalpur that the 'entire country, the Army and all the personnel bowed down at the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi' in the wake of Operation Sindoor, giving more fodder to the attacking Opposition. Congress MLAs detained The Congress MLAs were also detained briefly, and a scuffle broke out between them and the police personnel who tried to remove them from the Raj Bhavan. 'BJP is not with the army, nor is it with the Constitution…It is only there with its chair! History is a witness that whenever the government has become dictatorial, the public has made it bite the dust,' Mr. Singhar said on X after his detention. Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari asked why the BJP has not taken any action against its two leaders despite the High Court terming Mr. Shah's remarks 'language of gutters' and Supreme Court calling them 'shameful'. 'Yet, why no strict action has been taken against the two Ministers? Is the BJP government protecting such seditious statements?' Mr. Patwari asked. Protest a drama: Mohan Yadav Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav termed the Congress's protest a 'drama' and accused the Opposition party of 'disrespecting' the judiciary. 'No matter how much drama the Congress does, the party also knows that the matter is in the court and no one is above the court. There was a case against the Leader of Opposition (Mr. Singhar) too. Will the Congress demand his resignation? Wherever there is an opportunity to insult the court, the Congress does not miss it,' Mr. Yadav said. The Chief Minister also raked up former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying that she imposed Emergency after the Allahabad High Court pronounced a verdict against her. 'The Congress also changed the law on Triple Talaq given by the Supreme Court. We respect the order of the court, we follow whatever order the court gives,' he said, adding that the government will honour the court's decision in Mr. Shah's case. Meanwhile, the BJP is yet to initiate a formal disciplinary action against Mr. Shah.
