A-GC: Anwar's royal pardon followed proper constitutional process

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has refuted claims by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the royal pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2018 was invalid. In a statement today, the A-GC said it took serious note of Dr Mahathir's remarks, in which the former prime minister alleged that the pardon did not go through the proper process, namely a meeting of the Pardons Board. "The A-GC emphasises that the 51st Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 11am at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. "The meeting was chaired by the 15th king of Malaysia, Sultan Muhammad V, and attended by Dr Mahathir himself in his capacity as prime minister at the time." As such, the A-GC said, based on the advice of the Pardons Board, His Majesty consented to grant a full royal pardon to Anwar and ordered his immediate release, effective from the date of the board meeting. It also said that the then attorney-general had provided a written legal opinion for the board's consideration in accordance with Clause (9), Article 42 of the Federal Constitution. "The A-GC views this matter seriously as it involves constitutional and institutional interests. Any statement that may mislead the public regarding the Pardons Board's decision is wholly inappropriate," it said.

Ditch traditional cures, prioritise early cancer detection

Dr Siti Hasmah attributed her courage and determination to the steadfast support of her husband, former two-time Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Never believe in traditional 'bomohs' or 'tok bidan' who claim they have cures for cancer. It's disheartening that many still trust these methods and dismiss professional medical advice, advises Tun Dr Hasmah Women must move away from relying on traditional medicine for cancer treatment and instead prioritise professional medical care, advises Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali. Drawing from her own experience with breast cancer, she cautioned that seeking unverified treatments from traditional healers, or 'bomohs' and 'tok bidan,' only delays crucial medical intervention. "Never believe in traditional 'bomohs' or 'tok bidan' who claim they have cures for cancer. It's disheartening that many still trust these methods and dismiss professional medical advice. "The Malay community, in particular, is deeply affected by this reliance on traditional cures," she shared during a talk at Prince Court Medical Centre last week. Dr Hasmah recounted her journey overcoming breast cancer to highlight the importance of prompt medical consultation. 'It all begins with awareness and taking responsibility for our health. Women must understand that early detection not only saves lives but ensures better outcomes," she stated. She urged women to schedule annual check-ups, including mammograms and ultrasounds, as these screenings are vital for early detection. "If something feels wrong, don't ignore it. Take action immediately. A simple pain or lump could be a sign and waiting only makes things worse," she added. Photo illustrated by Sinar Daily Prince Court Medical Centre Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon Dr Harjit Kaur described that most breast cancers are painless, which can make them particularly insidious. Often, by the time symptoms appear and patients seek help, it may be too late. "Early detection through screenings like mammograms and ultrasounds is vital. These procedures are straightforward and could save countless lives," she said. Dr Hasmah also addressed the stigma surrounding breast cancer, observing that shame and fear continue to prevent women from seeking medical attention. 'Women often hesitate because the affected area is private, or they are scared of what the doctor might confirm. But if God has given us the pain, He has also given us the remedy. It is our responsibility to find that solution," she added. She commended young women who use reliable internet sources to educate themselves and confidently seek medical advice. 'There is a positive shift among the younger generation. Many are proactive, asking doctors the right questions and taking charge of their health,' she added. Reflecting on her personal battle, Dr Hasmah attributed her courage and determination to the steadfast support of her husband, former two-time Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. "When the doctor brought the positive diagnosis report to my house, my husband was disappointed that I hadn't told him earlier. But he was proud of my determination to get well. His support meant the world to me," she added. Dr Hasmah passionately urged women to make their health and well-being a top priority in their lives. She emphasised the importance of overcoming fear and stigma, encouraging women to be proactive about their health. "To all women out there, don't be afraid. Seek help, get your check-ups, and take charge of your health. If you want a happy and long life with your family, fear and shame have no place in this journey," she said.

Repairs, not politics, behind Dr Mahathir mural removal

ALOR SETAR: The Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) clarified today that the removal of a mural of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was approved as part of renovation work by the building owner. Mayor Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya said the mural, painted in 2015 at Medan Seni,"had deteriorated significantly, with visible paint peeling and weather damage." The building owner received official permission to repaint the wall and carry out structural repairs. Photos of the mural's disappearance, posted on the 'Alor Setar Kita' Facebook page yesterday, sparked public concern recently. Abdul Gafar said MBAS and Kedah Tourism recognised the value of public art and had respect for national icons such as Dr Mahathir. Plans are underway to either recreate the mural or restore it at a new location, he added. He added that MBAS will soon introduce new mural guidelines for private buildings. These include requiring written consent from the owner, council approval of the design, and maintenance plans. The mayor stressed the removal was not politically motivated and urged the public not to speculate. "MBAS truly appreciate the feedback and concern shown by various parties and call for continued cooperation from the artistic community and building owners to support this initiative," he said.

Mahathir: Law change needed for Petronas-Petros deal

Published on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Any shift in oil and gas management between Petronas and Petros requires legal amendments approved by both the federal and Sarawak governments said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. 'And these must be agreed upon by both the federal and state governments,' he said in his podcast. He stressed that Petronas holds exclusive rights under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and changes can't happen without reform. 'As long as the law is in force, we can't simply allocate or separate part of it to Sarawak,' he said, suggesting Sarawak could be given a bigger role through other means. Mahathir warned that splitting management could harm Petronas's global standing, noting it's the only Malaysian company in the Fortune 500. 'If we're not careful, we may lose something extraordinary,' he said, citing Petronas's rare global reach compared to even oil giants like Saudi Aramco. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? I'll (Maybe) Be Back – Dr Mahathir Not Ruling Out Return As PM

Subscribe to our FREE Former two-time prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad attended a book launch featuring the Perdana Leadership Foundation (PLF)'s latest publication, A Conversation with Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad: A Legacy of Leadership and Vision, on 19 May at the Foundation in Putrajaya. The launch included a special dialogue with Mahathir discussing the theme 'Challenges of Economic Development in the 21 st Century.' Mahathir, who will turn 100 on 10 July, unsurprisingly made an interesting comment during the dialogue. He was asked what will be the first thing he implements if he becomes the prime minister again. Without missing a beat, Mahathir said he would abolish the punishments on those who speak of 3R (race, religion, and royalty). He explained that he must know what the people is thinking about, citing that keeping people's mouths closed is not a good idea for leadership. He said he needs to be able to respond to people's feelings and problems and failing to do so, he'll fail to build a developed country. We need freedom of speech. We need freedom to do business on our own. We need a good cooperation between the government and the private sector. We need to develop this factory and make things easy. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Mahathir added that he feels there's too much corruption, adding that the wealth of the country cannot be exploited due to corruption any more. Netizens were amused by Mahathir's comments regarding 3R due to his known stance regarding Malay supremacy and his previous comments that could divide races. Some shared they didn't want Mahathir to be prime minister again and wondered how many times he wants to lead the country. To refresh everyone's memory: Mahathir suddenly ''rage quit'' aka While Mahathir has his own lifetime fans, many agreed that he should remain permanently retired.
