Chicago Sky Coach Has One Reason for Angel Reese Losing Playing Time
Chicago Sky Coach Has One Reason for Angel Reese Losing Playing Time originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky now own a 6-13 record during the 2025 WNBA season after Wednesday's win against the Dallas Wings. The 87-76 win moved them into 10th place in the league standings. Advertisement Second-year forward Angel Reese led the way for Chicago, recording her seventh-straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Veteran wing Rebecca Allen poured in a game-high 27 points, which was also her season-best scoring output. Reese had played 32 minutes or more in six consecutive contests before the matchup against the Wings, as well as 34 minutes or more in four straight. However, she only played 29 minutes in Wednesday's win. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Rookie forward Maddy Westbeld has begun playing more in July, appearing in each of the team's three games and averaging seven minutes per contest. Before these games, she had not subbed into four straight contests. Advertisement Westbeld's recent surge in playing time, however, has allowed other key rotational players to play fewer minutes. First-year Sky head coach Tyler Marsh admitted on Saturday that Reese is able to relax a bit more with Westbeld finally adjusting to the WNBA. "Maddy Westbeld has shown growth in adjusting to the speed of the game, and she has been beneficial in helping reduce Angel Reese's minutes as of late," Coach Marsh said, via Chicago State of Mind Sports. Reese is averaging 13.3 points, a league-leading 12.8 rebounds and a career-best 3.8 assists per game this season. She was named to her second consecutive All-Star team on Sunday. Advertisement Westbeld has only played in nine of the team's 19 contests this season, and she is averaging 1.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists per contest. The Sky's game against the 18-3 Minnesota Lynx tips off at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Chicago Sky Coach Keeps It Real on What Went Wrong in 14th Loss of the Season
Chicago Sky Coach Keeps It Real on What Went Wrong in 14th Loss of the Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky suffered their 14th loss of the season on Monday, falling 91-78 to the Minnesota Lynx. Advertisement Chicago kept the game close in the first half and led 46–44 at halftime, thanks to Angel Reese and Rachel Banham, who combined for 21 points. However, the team appeared to lose its edge in the second half, failing to reach the 20-point mark in both the third and fourth quarter as the Lynx pulled away for good. A 24-17 third quarter put the Lynx back in control, and they didn't look back after that en route to the 13-point victory. Napheesa Collier led the way for Minnesota with 29 points, three rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block. Meanwhile, Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams combined for 25 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and five steals and two blocks. Reese had a double-double for Chicago with 22 points and 10 boards, but her efforts were not enough to lead the team to another victory against the WNBA's best team this 2025. Advertisement Following the game, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh got painfully honest about their defeat, particularly pointing to their disappointing second-half display as a big reason for the loss. "We didn't handle the pressure great today," Marsh said, per Moreau Sports Media Prod Co. "The first half we managed it pretty well … the second half they just played a little bit harder than we did. We didn't close out the game like we wanted to today." Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh offers a blunt assessment of his team's performance in its loss to the Minnesota Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Marsh also highlighted the Sky's inability to protect their 10-point lead, which they had with 1:29 left to play in the second quarter. The Lynx went on to an 8-0 run to close out the half and cut their lead. Advertisement "We got to be able to capitalize when we get the lead to 10 points," Marsh added, per reporter Karli Bell. "Against a team like Minnesota, we can't have that big of a lapse in that short of a time." Aside from that, Marsh wasn't happy with their turnover woes. The Sky finished with 18 turnovers, which allowed the Lynx to score 24 off those mistakes. "The ball didn't move as quickly as we wanted to," Marsh added, according to Bell. "They did a decent job with us on the offensive glass. They capitalized off our turnovers. We just got to do a better job of taking care of the ball." The Sky dropped to 7-14 on the season with the loss. They have one more game, against the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday, to return to the win column before the All-Star break. Tyler Marsh Gives Chicago Sky Injury Updates
Tyler Marsh Gives Chicago Sky Injury Updates originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was a tough night for the Chicago Sky, who came up short in their bid for a third straight win. After beating Minnesota on Saturday at Wintrust Arena, head coach Tyler Marsh and his squad couldn't keep the momentum going Monday night against the same opponent. Chicago dropped to 7-14 with the loss. Advertisement The 91-78 loss didn't just sting in the standings, it hit the roster hard as well. Two key players left the game due to injuries and didn't return. Ariel Atkins exited after 15 minutes of action with a leg injury. Later, Michaela Onyenwere went down hard in transition and stayed on the floor for a moment before being helped off. She had played 21 minutes at the time. Coach Marsh provided brief updates after the game. "I think Michaela is fine. No concussion. Ariel is still being evaluated," Marsh said. The good news for the Sky is that Onyenwere appears to have avoided a concussion. The bad news is the uncertainty surrounding Atkins, who has been one of the team's leading scorers. Advertisement Chicago is already without veteran Courtney Vandersloot, who underwent ACL surgery in June. The WNBA veteran from Gonzaga was averaging 10.6 points per game before the injury. Atkins, a former Texas Longhorn, came into Monday's game averaging 14.5 points per contest. She had scored 27 in Saturday's win over the Lynx. Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh gives updates on players after a tough Gonzales-Imagn Images Onyenwere, the sixth overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft out of UCLA, doesn't fill the box score but plays an important role. She's averaging 14 minutes per game this season. In 2024, her first season with Chicago, she started 18 of 34 games and logged 18.7 minutes per game. The Sky will wrap up the first half of their season on Wednesday when they host the Atlanta Dream. Angel Reese Bracing for Punishment After Another Brutal Loss
On Sunday, July 6 the Chicago Sky suffered their 12th loss of the season, this time in an 80-75 contest against the Minnesota Lynx, who own the best record in the WNBA at 17-2. The Sky dominated the first quarter, out-scoring the Lynx 24-10 before Minnesota immediately fired back with a 28-13 second quarter run to take a one-point lead into halftime. Following the game, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh made it clear he wasn't too happy with the officiating. Advertisement "Yeah, I mean, it's hard to imagine that we would only have eight free throws with the amount of opportunities that we have in the paint," he said. "I think that we're top 2 or 3 in the league in terms of shots at the rim, but in the bottom three or four in the league, in terms of getting to the free-throw line, and the reason for that, I'm not sure. "But I know that [Kamilla Cardoso] and [Elizabeth Williams] and Angel receive a lot of contact down there and have a lot of opportunities to be at the rim. And that's kind of how we play as a team, and for us to not get to the line more than that is a little frustrating." Angel Reese #5 of the Chicago Sky drives towards the basket against Napheesa Collier #24 of the Minnesota Lynx during the third quarter at Target Center on July 6, 2025 in Minneapolis, wasn't the only member of the team frustrated with the officiating on Sunday, though. Star forward Angel Reese called the officiating "diabolical" and when a fan pointed out her comment about not caring about receiving a fine for her critical comments after the game Reese wrote, "idgaf. DO BETTER. @WNBA." Advertisement The All-Star forward wasn't pleased with the fact that Minnesota went to the free-throw line 17 times during the game, but Chicago went to the stripe just eight times. 'Yeah, I think we fought really hard," she said after the loss. "It's tough when you talk to officials, and I ask them, 'Hey, we only shot 2 free throws. We've only been to the free throw line twice up into the 4th quarter,' and she tells me, 'It's not her job,'" Reese complained. "So I know it's frustrating because I know how hard we're battling inside, and I think that we came down and fought as hard as we could with what we had. "I just know we continue to grow in this. And I think this is a leaping step for us. And obviously we know we can compete with the best, but that has to be fixed, and I don't give a damn if I get fined, because that s--- cheap, and I am tired of the s---, because I've been nice, and I've been humble with it. But I am tired of the s---.' Chicago fell to 5-12 on the season. Chicago Sky Coach Issues Angel Reese Take Before Napheesa Collier Matchup
Chicago Sky Coach Issues Angel Reese Take Before Napheesa Collier Matchup originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky now have a 6-13 record during the 2025 WNBA season. They defeated the 6-15 Dallas Wings on Wednesday by a score of 87 to 76 to earn their sixth victory of the season and move into 10th place in the league standings. Advertisement Rebecca Allen, a 10-year veteran wing, led the way for Chicago with a game-high and season-best 27 points in the win. Angel Reese also recorded her seventh-straight double-double with a 15-point, 11-rebound outing against the Wings. Wednesday's win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Sky, which began on July 6 against the 18-3 Minnesota Lynx after a six-day rest. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images On Saturday, the Sky will take on the Lynx once again. Minnesota has the WNBA's best record and is led by MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier. She is currently averaging 23.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in her seventh professional season. Advertisement Before the game between Chicago and Minnesota, first-year Sky head coach Tyler Marsh spoke on Friday about the looming matchup between Reese and Collier. "I think Angel plays Phee tough pretty much every matchup. I think that there's a certain point with Phee, where it's just like, you know, she's gonna get her numbers," Marsh said. "You just try to make it as difficult as possible, and I think that Angel does a good job of being physical with her and not bailing her out, making her work for everything, and that's all you can ask for." Marsh went on to talk about how Reese, who is averaging 13.3 points and a career-best 3.8 assists per contest, also does a great job of putting pressure on Collier defensively. Advertisement "She returns the favor on the other end, too," Marsh said. "Angel tries to attack her on the offensive end as well, so I think they've got a good competitive spirit and relationship when they match up against each other. Angel is always ready for the matchup." Reese and Collier will face off on Saturday and Monday in back-to-back games. After that, the two will team up for Team Collier in the 2025 WNBA All-Star game on July 19. Saturday's game will tip off at 1:00 p.m. ET at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
