Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler? Saints QB choice in trouble either way
Yahoo Sports host Andrew Siciliano, senior NFL writer Frank Schwab and senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson discuss the only remaining open quarterback job in the league and why either choice by Kellen Moore won't do much to turn New Orleans around this season. View more Video Transcript There's only one job remaining. So let's tell you about that one job. It is the job quarterbacking the New Orleans Saints, and it's between Tyler Shuck, who as a second-round pick and an older quarterback, 26 years old when they drafted him, man, he just assumed he would easily get the job. However, don't discount Spencer Rattler, friends, because Spencer Rattler rallied them back to a tie with Jacksonville this week, had a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He's got a little moxie; he's got a foot in the system, he could play a little bit; certainly, if you thought he was the guy though, you wouldn't take Tyler Shuck at 26 years old in the second round. Shuck played four drives. Rattler played five drives. Some people say maybe they'll trade for Kenny Pickett. I would push back and go, Charles, why would the Saints trade for a veteran quarterback at all? Just pick one of these two guys, and I, I don't say, what does it matter? That sounds flippant and sarcastic and mean-spirited, but I don't think they're gonna win a lot of games with either. Let's just be blunt. They're closer to a drive-through window than a Super Bowl window. Just go with Shuck. Yeah, it's like he's, yeah, yeah, that's the thing. He's not a developmental guy. Like, if he doesn't play right away, what the heck did I, I've been saying all offseason: draft him. It makes no sense. Just take this thing, but I, I unfortunately drafted him. Yeah, you have to draft him; if he doesnt, I, I've watched every snap of Saints preseason football, unfortunately this year, and I could tell you, I probably think Rattler is the better choice right now, as sad as that sounds, but either way, this is a bad Andrew. I, you say the only team I haven't been positive about is the Browns. I will put the Saints in that category too. The Saints are going to be awful. Like Kellen Moore, I hope they have patience with him because they're gonna be bad, bad, bad. Frank, in our final minute, I read your entire column about, like, the whole wrap-up of the preseason. Thank you. It was a great cheat sheet as I was flying home from the one game that I saw in person. You watched them all. I get it. It's part of the job, but every snap of the Saints in the preseason, I deserve hazard pay, hazard pay. I'm gonna be putting in for that. Joey, if you're still listening, I'm, I'm putting in hazard pay. I haven't watched the Saints team. Oh, they're bad. Were you wearing a guardian cap? I was wearing a cap. Close

Will Kellen Moore and the Saints improve on last season?
Will Kellen Moore and the Saints improve on last season? | Inside Coverage Jason Fitz, Charles Robinson, and Frank Schwab discuss the offseason for the New Orleans Saints and where they stand in comparison to 12 months ago. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. Advertisement View more Video Transcript The Saints, over under 5.5 wins. They went 5 and 12 last year. Today, right now, see, Rob, are you rise, repeat, or retreat compared to how you felt a year ago today on the Saints. Repeat, what, 5 and 12? I think they could go 5 and 12 again. I think, I think it's more repeat. I look, I don't like the quarterback situation. Obviously, Derek Carr retires, uh, Tyler Sho is, it appears is gonna be your starting quarterback there, um. I, I just don't have a lot of faith and, and, I mean, Chris Olave, like, where's his health at? Um, can he come back and, and play at, you know, the top level that we've seen in the past? Advertisement That's a big if. The backfield, I think is a huge question mark. Um, it's, it's just to me again, I, I wanna keep this brief. Um, I, I feel like it all is gonna derive from having to stick a, you know, a, a quarterback in there who's a rookie, granted, well, he's 25, he's not like he's a You know, he's played a ton of football at 77 seasons. So, um, but again, yeah, I don't, I, I don't feel great about the Saints, and I think a lot of it just has to do with what's going on in quarterback. Yeah, I, I think this is a big time retreat for me. I think this could be the worst team in the NFL. I mean, when you look at, you look at everything, there's a reason they did not get one primetime game this year because the NFL does not want us to watch the New Orleans Saints and for good reason. Advertisement I think this, this roster is a lot older than you think. The only true blue chip player they have under the age of 28 is Chris Olave, who you just talked about, has concussion issues. I, I just don't see any good reason to, to back the Saints this year. They're, they're aging in a lot of key spots. That there's not a lot of young talent coming through. They really need to hit the reset button. They've been striving for mediocrity so long. That's why I really didn't like the Tyler Shuck pick, because the worst possible scenario for the New Orleans Saints is you play Tyler Shuck, and he's just good enough that instead of winning 2 games this year, getting the first pick of the draft and say, come on home, Arch Manning. Advertisement Well, you win like 5 games and you're, you don't have a shot at the quarterback you want because this New Orleans Saints team needs something. happen. They, they keep going about their business the same exact way, and they just keep getting worse and worse and worse, and their ceiling is like absolute positive ceiling is like 8 or 9 wins, tops. And what are you doing? You're just spinning your wheels. So I, I think the Saints are going to bottom out this year. I think they're gonna be really, really, really bad. I think they're gonna get one of the top 3 picks. They're gonna get that quarterback in next year's draft, whether it's Archer or somebody else, and then you can kind of start to say, all right, we need a new era of New Orleans Saints football. Advertisement Yeah, I, I retreat on the Saints. I think they, they are gonna be the worst, but the age and the chaos in me, this is how I wanted to go down. I want everybody to sit there and all year put the, the bricks together of Arch to the Saints, only to have the Saints get the first overall pick. Archie looks at it and says, not a great situation around the franchise right now. Let's stay back for another year in Texas. And then all of a sudden, uh, there's no Arch. Can you imagine Archie Manning like orchestrating that? It's like, I don't want my kid to play over the Saints. Look what happened to me.

Is Tyler Shough a shoo-in to start for the Saints?
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz, senior NFL reporter Jori Epstein and senior NFL writer Frank Schwab discuss the starting quarterback situation in New Orleans following Derek Carr's retirement and predict who will behind center when the season begins. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Who do you guys expect to start week one in New Orleans, and how would you go about making that decision? Advertisement To me, it's, it's almost has to be Tyler Sch because he's a senior citizen already. Like, I, I mean, like, let's be real, like, if he's not ready to start week one, then why you draft him? You have to have some self-awareness if you're the Saints and realize, you know what, we're back. We, we are one of the three worst teams in the NFL right now. What, like, just Just be bad. It's OK to be bad for a year if the end result means in the 2026 draft, you get your quarterback in the future and you're set for the next 10 years. Let me give Saints fans a beacon of hope here. Nate Tice, who does great work breaking these things down, and you should check out Football 301. Advertisement Tice made it very clear in the first meeting that Tyler Shuck was the guy that Keller Moore liked. Just because he went at 40 doesn't mean he was the 40th best. Player to the Saints. Like, if Kellen Moore really walked into this draft process saying, Tyler Shuck is our guy, and I'm willing to spend a second round draft pick on him, I'm not willing to say with that information that there's any proof that the Saints don't believe that Tyler Shuck can be their starting quarterback. What are the odds that the Saints are in April 2026 saying, yeah, we got a top three pick, but we got our quarterback. Tyler Shuck is our guy. Advertisement We're not drafting. Arch Manning or or anybody else like I, I think there's I think it's 5% tops that that that happens. To me, I think the two reasons that I would push back on that one is a year ago I'd be like, these quarterbacks that are drafted, not at the top, a little bit beyond those like first few picks, do we feel like they can succeed? And then I think Boonne and Michael Pennix Junior showed us. And then there might be something there. So I do think that Tyler Shark should be ready to hit close to his ceiling. The question is just what his ceiling is. The other thing I'll say is, when you look at Dak Prescott, who was the last 3rd day draft pick who has had multi-year success, who was with him when that was happening? Advertisement Well, his backup quarterback and soon to be Quarterback coach and offensive coordinator was Kellen Moore, and now Kellen Moore is the head coach of the Saints going to be in Tyler S Shack's here. And I'm not saying that Tyler Shack is going to have Dak's career or even Dak's rookie year, but I do think that if you want to say, do we understand the formula, do we understand the blueprint, you have people who watched it front and center up close with Dak Prescott.
