Miami Dolphins' Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson address practice altercation: 'Brotherly love'
CHICAGO — Shortly after Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks began answering questions about an incident with teammate Tyrel Dodson, the latter stood up right next to Brooks to join the chat with media. Brooks and Dodson had a fiery altercation at the Dolphins' recent joint practice with the Bears, two days before Miami's preseason opener. "Wasn't no disagreement," Brooks said. "My dawg right here, man, with us. Fight all the time. So anybody got kids, they fight all the time. That's all. That was man, brotherly love, man." Former Dolphin Terron Armstead said on his podcast that Brooks was challenging Dodson to more physically bring down a Bears player. "I mean it's practice," Dodson said. "It's a thud tempo, so we can't worry about what others do. We have our own discipline and stuff like that. So we can only have our standard, which is our standard. If it's thud, it's thud. It's no tackling. So that's what it is." Bears defenders were seen tackling, shoving and throwing down Miami offensive players. Jaylen Waddle was injured after he was hit by a Bears player in practice. Mike McDaniel: Jaylen Waddle had injury after Bears practice hit Coach Mike McDaniel did not reveal details of the injury, which kept Waddle out of the preseason opener. McDaniel also revealed he was not thrilled to hear about the Brooks-Dodson incident. At the time, McDaniel was on the Dolphins' offensive practice field. "I'm not pumped about the front part of it, but I also knew that the people that were engaged in it, they came up to me and explained what happened," McDaniel said. "And the biggest thing is they took the time to apologize to the team." McDaniel hopes there is a positive outcome. "They knew it wasn't to our standard and what we're about," McDaniel said. "And so they were accountable with their teammates and I think into the team. So overall, I think it was something that was family business that families go through." Jordyn Brooks-Tyrel Dodson scuffle not up to Miami 'standard' In the locker room after the game, Brooks said he knows what Dodson can do. "That was part of what the scuffle was about," Brooks said. "Knowing his abilities to do everything out there on the football field." Brooks was asked which linebacker is the big brother. "Definitely me," Brooks said. In the preseason game, Dodson made a tackle to get Miami's defense off the field in the first quarter. Brooks enthusiastically celebrated with him. "That was awesome," Brooks said. "You know what I mean? Getting off the field, being extra physical, getting off down. It had me excited. Anytime we get off the field, I'm excited." Miami Minicamp Confidential: LB Tyrel Dodson heads into first full season in South Florida
Miami Minicamp Confidential: LB Tyrel Dodson heads into first full season in South Florida The Miami Dolphins start mandatory minicamp this week. It will be the first in South Florida for a returning signee from the middle of last season, linebacker Tyrel Dodson. Playing eight games for the Dolphins after claiming him off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, Dodson will stay in Miami Gardens after inking a two-year contract in the offseason, worth $6.25 million Dodson played outstanding football in his appearances, which included three starts. The coverage aspect of his game was on display, tallying three interceptions from Week 11 through Week 18. The trio of picks was the most from a linebacker during the 2024 season, and in the timeframe with the Dolphins, just five other defenders overall recorded at least three interceptions. He also was able to rack up four passes defended with Miami and six total on the season. In addition to his coverage skills, Dodson showed he could get to the quarterback as well, notching a pair of sacks back in Seattle in the first half of 2024. As a tackler, Dodson racked up 15 against the Cleveland Browns in a 20-3 Week 17 Dolphins victory. That performance featured the most single-game tackles by a Miami player since 2020 when linebacker Jerome Baker had 16 against the New England Patriots in the season opener. With his interception against the Browns in that same game, Dodson became the first Miami player to record 15 tackles along with a pick since 1994. Dodson put together a very respectable season across his play with both teams, finishing the season with a career-high 107 tackles along with five tackles for loss and four quarterback hits in addition to his work in coverage. Dodson held quarterbacks to a career-best 66.7 passer rating through his eight games with Miami, and 77.2 on the season when factoring in his work in Seattle. His previous seasonal best in this metric was his rookie season at 87.2. Entering his sixth year in the NFL, Dodson was undrafted in 2020 out of Texas Tech and signed with the Buffalo Bills as a rookie. Mainly a special teamer in Western New York across his four seasons with Buffalo, Dodson showed sparks of his potential in the Pacific Northwest with Seattle, playing 98% of the defensive snaps in his nine games with the Seahawks. His first games with Miami last year plus a multi-year contract should send him into the 2025 season with momentum. However, the Dolphins also signed veteran free agent linebackers K.J. Britt as well as Willie Gay, Jr. this offseason, so Dodson still has some work to do to solidify a starting spot, or at worst, significant snaps. At this moment, you can pencil in Dodson to pair with Jordyn Brooks as inside linebackers, who also was a standout player in his first season in Miami. The middle of the second phase of defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver's unit will be crucial this season. Weaver's defense is a group that on paper is superior in talent within the front-seven as opposed to the secondary. Dodson and the Dolphins hold mini-camp on Tuesday, June 10 through Thursday, June 12.

Live updates: What the Dolphins are doing during Day 1 of free agency. All the news here
Welcome to Day 1 of the Miami Herald's Dolphins-flavored free agency blog. NFL teams can agree to contract terms with players from other teams beginning at noon Monday, but players cannot sign until 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Dolphins entered Monday with $28 million in cap space. Miami has 25 unrestricted free agents: offensive linemen Kendall Lamm, Isaiah Wynn, Robert Jones, Liam Eichenberg and Jackson Carman; outside linebackers Emmanuel Ogbah and Tyus Bowser; defensive tackles Da'Shawn Hand and Benito Jones; linebackers Tyrel Dodson, Duke Riley, Anthony Walker Jr. and Cam Brown; safeties Elijah Campbell, Jordan Poyer and Siran Neal; receivers River Cracraft, Braxton Berrios and Dee Eskridge; running back Jeff Wilson Jr.; quarterback Tyler Huntley, tight end Jack Stoll and long snapper Jake McQuaide. Among restricted free agents, Miami tendered cornerback Kader Kohou but not linebacker Quinton Bell or receiver Anthony Schwartz. Among exclusive rights free agents, the Dolphins tendered outside linebacker Cameron Goode and offensive tackle Kion Smith, but not receiver Grant DuBose, though his return hasn't been ruled out. Check here all day for updates, with newer ones added at the top. 10 am: Besides the obvious needs that will be addressed in the next couple of days (guard, defensive line, cornerback, safety, backup quarterback), Miami also has inside linebacker very much on its mind. A source confirmed a Dolphins Talk report that San Francisco free agent Dre Greenlaw is someone of interest to Miami. But his market is expected to exceed what Miami is willing or able to pay. The Dolphins also remain interested in re-signing Tyrel Dodson if the sides can agree to terms. But they're exploring the market in case they don't strike a deal. Except for Jordyn Brooks and seldom-used Channing Tindall, all of Miami's other inside linebackers are free agents (Dodson, Anthony Walker Jr., Duke Riley). 9:50 a.m.: The Dolphins know they must add an established defensive tackle, and two more quality veterans just became available, with Atlanta set to release Grady Jarrett and the 49ers cutting Maliek Collins. Keep checking back all day for updates.
