Painful truth of 'insane' skin needling K-pop stars use in name of beauty
A skincare entrepreneur has lifted the lid on the 'insane' deep needling procedure used by K-pop stars to maintain South Korea 's unrealistic beauty standards. The skin-tightening acupuncture is used by models and members of the wildly successful girl band Blackpink. But Tina Chen Craig, founder of U Beauty, has revealed the painful procedure sees patients inserted with needles '20 times thicker' than those used by traditional Chinese acupuncture practitioners. Tina dished about her experience during a recent appearance on the Well with Arielle Lorre podcast. The entrepreneur underwent an extreme form of skin-tightening acupuncture at the hands of Blackpink's mysterious dermatologist, who is known only as 'Dr Yoon' due to the secrecy around her methods. 'It was a Korean deep needling, it was so insane,' explained Tina, who said most patients go under anesthesia for the painful procedure. 'It was about 20 times thicker than the traditional Chinese acupuncture needle. 'When she inserted it I could feel her twisting it, and then she electrified it.' 'It hurts so bad that I started crying,' she added, comparing it to 'acupuncture on steroids.' After patients are needled and electrified, Dr Yoon uses a 'deep, pulsating tightening machine' that she invented herself. 'That hurt the most,' said Tina. 'I felt my face melting off.' While Tina admits she did not see results right away, within a month of the procedure she said her skin had started becoming noticeably tighter. 'It's over time. That's what the Asians are about, it's never a quick fix,' she explained. 'By the third month I really felt the tightening. It was crazy. I'd go back in a heartbeat.' In an interview with Into The Gloss last year, Tina said that patients are 'sworn to secrecy' when it comes to identifying Dr Yoon publicly. 'She's all about improving the texture and health of the skin and avoiding surgery,' she explained. While Tina couldn't say too much, she did reveal that Dr Yoon's mysterious machine is a combination of two other skincare devices, one being Ulthera - an ultrasound cosmetic procedure used to lift and tighten the skin. South Korea is known for having some of the strictest beauty standards in the world, and is revered for its cutting-edge plastic surgery procedures and skincare. Some of the most common physical features considered beautiful in the country include a V-line jaw, pale skin, double eyelids, a thin high nose, and a small face. According to statistics, nearly 25 per cent of women aged 19 to 29 in South Korea have undergone plastic surgery. The unrealistic beauty standards in the country have sparked a backlash, particularly from feminist groups. In 2022, a popular cosmetic surgery reality series was shut down following growing criticism from the public. The show, titled Let Me In, saw people come in and plead their case to receive a plastic surgery makeover so that they could improve their lives. Blackpink is composed of four members: Jisoo, 30, Jennie, 29, Rose, 28, and Lisa, 28. The quartet, the most popular girl group in the world, are set to kick off their next world tour in July. The tour will kick off in Seoul, with two shows at Goyang Stadium, before stopping in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Tokyo and more. The Pink Venom hitmakers will also perform at London's Wembley Stadium on August 15, making them the first K-pop girl group to headline the venue. This marks Blackpink's first headline tour since their record-breaking Born Pink World Tour, which ran from 2022 to 2023. It became the highest-grossing tour by a girl group and drew over 1.8 million fans to stages worldwide. Together, they have redefined global K-pop success, captivating audiences around the world with their dynamic live performances and record-breaking achievements. They also hold the title as the most-subscribed artist on YouTube, boasting over 96 million subscribers. Over the past few years, the singers have launched highly successful solo careers, releasing several debut albums, EPs and various chart-topping hits. Some of the members have also branched out into acting, with Lisa starring on HBO's The White Lotus, while Jennie starred in HBO's The Idol alongside The Weeknd.

Vogue's Guide to the Different Types of Sunscreen You Need This Summer
Ask any dermatologist what the best sunscreen is and they'll most likely tell you this: the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use everyday. But how does one choose that perfect sunscreen that will make you remember this very important step in your routine? To figure that out, you'll have to understand what all of your options are. Below, the experts break down every type of sunscreen to help you make wise skin health (and shopping) decisions. Types of Sunscreen There are two types of sunscreens you can choose from: mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. The difference between the two can be broken down as follows: Mineral Sunscreens Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, block the sun's harmful UV rays from penetrating the skin. As Marisa Garshick, MD, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, explains it, mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to scatter and reflect the UV rays when it bounces off the skin to protect it from damage. There are many pros of mineral sunscreen, but they are most known to be less irritating and great for sensitive skin. Though they may leave behind a white cast, Dr. Garshick says that newer formulations have been developed to minimize that. Options like the U Beauty's Multimodal Sheer Mineral Sunscreen or Shiseido's Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion Mineral SPF 60+ provide nourishing skincare benefits while also blending quite nicely into the skin. Chemical Sunscreens According to Hadley King, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's UV rays and create a chemical reaction to turn the UV rays into heat that will be released from the skin. They're usually made of chemical ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, and homosalate, and Dr. Garshick says these formulations are generally easier to rub in and won't leave a white cast. But because they are made of various chemical filters, she does warn that some people may experience some irritation or sensitivity to these types of formulas. But a lot of formulations are made with sensitive skin in mind, such as the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 or the Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+. If you happen to like the feel of these chemical sunscreens more, you can easily opt for these gentle options over a mineral one. Lotions, Sprays, Sticks, and More Sunscreens also come in many forms. You can find a mineral and chemical sunscreen in a lotion, stick (the E.l.f. Cosmetics Suntouchable Invisi-Stick SPF 50 makes reapplying so easy while on the go), spray, and even serum format (cult-classic Australian sunscreen brand Ultra Violette is finally available in the U.S. and the Future Screen SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen Serum is a current fave among many). Mineral sunscreens also come in powder form like the classic Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50. When it comes to choosing between these types of sunscreen, Dr. King says that you should pick the one most appropriate for your lifestyle. What does SPF mean? We're always told to look for sunscreen with SPF, but what does that actually mean? SPF stands for sun protection factor and as Dr. King explains it, it measures how much a sunscreen will shield your skin from ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which can cause sunburn.

Michelle Monaghan on ‘The White Lotus' Cliffhangers and Her Thailand Beauty Routine
It's a good week to be Michelle Monaghan. Episode five of 'The White Lotus' has had everyone abuzz since airing Sunday night, with Monaghan's character Jaclyn caught in one of the episode's major cliffhangers. In the midst of talking about the show, Monaghan was also celebrating her first beauty campaign, for U Beauty. After the news was announced earlier in the day, the actress was on hand at The Mark Hotel Tuesday evening for a celebratory dinner hosted by U Beauty's Tina Craig and Katie Borghese. 'I'm so excited about this campaign,' said Monaghan, sporting a pale pink Khaite slipdress. 'I've been a longtime fan of their products and it just felt like we were all aligned in terms of what our beauty standards are and what our goals are.' More from WWD The 14 Best Hydrating Serums That Moisturize Dry Skin, According to Experts Michael Kors Celebrates Amazon Launch With Campaign Star Suki Waterhouse and More NYX Professional Makeup Partners With 'A Minecraft Movie' for New Collection of Game-inspired Beauty Essentials Framing the dining room were several blown-up images from the campaign, which Monaghan said was a little 'surreal' to walk into. 'I can say that I've never really enjoyed looking at myself so much,' she said. 'They really did such a beautiful job.' While on set in Thailand shooting 'The White Lotus,' Monaghan especially relied upon U Beauty's resurfacing compound, which she called her 'holy grail' product. 'It helps lighten my dark spots and some of my sun damage and texture of my skin. It brightens my skin, which was actually a really key component in Thailand because it was so hot there. It was really hard to wear makeup so I wanted my skin to be healthy. So the resurfacing compound was lovely,' she said. 'It gives me a nice glow.' The rest of her Thailand beauty routine included drinking lots of water and applying bug spray, but she also incorporated U Beauty's lip plasma into her character Jaclyn's wardrobe. 'I use the universal lip plasma, but for my character, I chose it in rose. She likes to make a statement,' Monaghan said. The room buzzed around her as she chatted with reaction to Sunday's episode, which saw Jaclyn seduce a man she'd previously been encouraging her friend Laurie to go for. 'I'm hearing through the grapevine that there are two different schools of thought. There's a lot of people who are like, 'Go Jaclyn, go get yours.' And then there is another school of thought where Jaclyn broke girl code with Laurie,'' Monaghan said. 'We all knew that that was going to spark conversation. And I think that we'll see how it all kind of pans out [in] episode six. But I think Jaclyn sincerely wanted Laurie to hook up and have a great time and deserved it. I think Jaclyn is the type of person that needs a lot of external validation, and she wasn't getting it. She was getting a little bored. She went out, had some fun, hit the 'f–k it' button and was thinking, 'I'm going to tell the girls about it in the next morning.' I don't think she feels like she's done anything wrong — but we'll see how the ladies feel.'
