Painful truth of 'insane' skin needling K-pop stars use in name of beauty

Daily Mail31-05-2025
A skincare entrepreneur has lifted the lid on the 'insane' deep needling procedure used by K-pop stars to maintain South Korea 's unrealistic beauty standards.
The skin-tightening acupuncture is used by models and members of the wildly successful girl band Blackpink.
But Tina Chen Craig, founder of U Beauty, has revealed the painful procedure sees patients inserted with needles '20 times thicker' than those used by traditional Chinese acupuncture practitioners.
Tina dished about her experience during a recent appearance on the Well with Arielle Lorre podcast.
The entrepreneur underwent an extreme form of skin-tightening acupuncture at the hands of Blackpink's mysterious dermatologist, who is known only as 'Dr Yoon' due to the secrecy around her methods.
'It was a Korean deep needling, it was so insane,' explained Tina, who said most patients go under anesthesia for the painful procedure.
'It was about 20 times thicker than the traditional Chinese acupuncture needle.
'When she inserted it I could feel her twisting it, and then she electrified it.'
'It hurts so bad that I started crying,' she added, comparing it to 'acupuncture on steroids.'
After patients are needled and electrified, Dr Yoon uses a 'deep, pulsating tightening machine' that she invented herself.
'That hurt the most,' said Tina. 'I felt my face melting off.'
While Tina admits she did not see results right away, within a month of the procedure she said her skin had started becoming noticeably tighter.
'It's over time. That's what the Asians are about, it's never a quick fix,' she explained.
'By the third month I really felt the tightening. It was crazy. I'd go back in a heartbeat.'
In an interview with Into The Gloss last year, Tina said that patients are 'sworn to secrecy' when it comes to identifying Dr Yoon publicly.
'She's all about improving the texture and health of the skin and avoiding surgery,' she explained.
While Tina couldn't say too much, she did reveal that Dr Yoon's mysterious machine is a combination of two other skincare devices, one being Ulthera - an ultrasound cosmetic procedure used to lift and tighten the skin.
South Korea is known for having some of the strictest beauty standards in the world, and is revered for its cutting-edge plastic surgery procedures and skincare.
Some of the most common physical features considered beautiful in the country include a V-line jaw, pale skin, double eyelids, a thin high nose, and a small face.
According to statistics, nearly 25 per cent of women aged 19 to 29 in South Korea have undergone plastic surgery.
The unrealistic beauty standards in the country have sparked a backlash, particularly from feminist groups.
In 2022, a popular cosmetic surgery reality series was shut down following growing criticism from the public.
The show, titled Let Me In, saw people come in and plead their case to receive a plastic surgery makeover so that they could improve their lives.
Blackpink is composed of four members: Jisoo, 30, Jennie, 29, Rose, 28, and Lisa, 28.
The quartet, the most popular girl group in the world, are set to kick off their next world tour in July.
The tour will kick off in Seoul, with two shows at Goyang Stadium, before stopping in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Tokyo and more.
The Pink Venom hitmakers will also perform at London's Wembley Stadium on August 15, making them the first K-pop girl group to headline the venue.
This marks Blackpink's first headline tour since their record-breaking Born Pink World Tour, which ran from 2022 to 2023.
It became the highest-grossing tour by a girl group and drew over 1.8 million fans to stages worldwide.
Together, they have redefined global K-pop success, captivating audiences around the world with their dynamic live performances and record-breaking achievements.
They also hold the title as the most-subscribed artist on YouTube, boasting over 96 million subscribers.
Over the past few years, the singers have launched highly successful solo careers, releasing several debut albums, EPs and various chart-topping hits.
Some of the members have also branched out into acting, with Lisa starring on HBO's The White Lotus, while Jennie starred in HBO's The Idol alongside The Weeknd.

Kanye West and Bianca Censori go viral yet again after Grammys afterparty video resurfaces

Kanye West and have gone viral again for their rollicking antics at a late-night afterparty. It happened in February during a Grammys event at which Bianca performed a karaoke version Adele's Rolling In The Deep. In the resurfaced video Kanye can be seen running his hands over Bianca's body as their tongues meet. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO The video went viral this week as Bianca jetted into Seoul, wearing perhaps her most surprising look to date - a completely covered up-outfit. In a departure from her usual flesh-flashing attire, Bianca, 30, showed hardly a shred of skin as she touched down into the South Korean capital alongside her spouse, 48. She wore black leggings, furry leg warmers, and a taupe messenger cap. Kanye dressed similarly in all-black, opting for a zip-down sweatshirt, leather pants, and suede footwear. The couple's outing comes about a week after Censori appeared in scantily-clad photos, which were photographed by her rapper husband and shared to Instagram.

Elemis' £49 spa cleansing balm has thousands of 5-star reviews – I compared it to Boots £7.50 dupe everyone raves about

AS a dedicated skincare enthusiast, I'm always on the lookout for that perfect balance where effectiveness meets affordability. For what feels like an age, the beauty world has been abuzz with endless praise for the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, a product often dubbed a 'spa-worthy' luxury cleanser. 4 And, I won't deny it - it truly is a delight to use. The experience of the Elemis balm is truly an undeniable one. It begins as a rich, solid balm, melting seamlessly into a sumptuous oil as it warms on the skin, before finally evolving into a delicate, hydrating milk upon contact with water. And there's no denying that it dissolves every trace of makeup, daily grime and impurities. It certainly leaves my skin feeling soft, nourished, and pampered. The formula itself is a boasts exceptional ingredients such as Elderberry and Padina Pavonica, complemented by a meticulously crafted essential oil blend that elevates the cleansing process into a truly indulgent evening ritual. However, with a price tag of £49.00, from Boots for a modest 100g jar, it's undeniably a splurge - one that, for many, myself included, simply isn't sustainable for day-to-day use. This led me to a recent discovery that has completely shifted my perspective and won my heart: the Boots HABI Moisture Melt Cleansing Balm. Beauty fans have taken to internet to praise it for being a "dupe" to the Elemis product, and a "great alternative." At an astonishing £7.50 for a generous 100g pot, the HABI Moisture Melt Cleansing Balm offers everything I desire in a cleansing balm, without the hefty price tag. And like the Elemis cleansing balm, it's nothing short of a revelation. Even the design of the pot is something else. You can twist the lid for it to come out bit by bit, or use the provide spoon to scoop it out onto your hands. From the moment I scoop out a small amount, I'm greeted with a smooth, gel-like balm that feels wonderfully indulgent. As I dot it onto my dry face and gently massage it in, the texture transforms beautifully. I've come to realise that these extras, while lovely, aren't strictly necessary for achieving a great cleanse Yasmin Harisha Under the warmth of my fingertips, it melts into a silky, lightweight oil that glides effortlessly across the skin. This transformation is key - the oil works its magic, dissolving even the most stubborn waterproof mascara and lifting away the day's build-up of dirt and pollutants. Like the Elemis product it turns into a milky texture after water is applied to it. Once I felt I had immulsified it enough on my face, I grabbed a soaked flannel and wipe it off. After rinsing, my skin feels immaculately clean, soft, and comfortably refreshed, with no tightness, greasiness, or unpleasant residue. It delivers a thorough and satisfying cleanse every time - exactly what I look for in a cleansing balm. While the Elemis balm does offer a more aromatic experience and a slightly more intricate texture transition, I've come to realise that these extras, while lovely, aren't strictly necessary for achieving a great cleanse. Especially when the price difference is so stark. The HABI balm proves, without question, that you don't need to spend a small fortune to achieve beautifully clean, happy skin. It's straightforward, exceptionally effective, and wonderfully affordable, making it a true unsung hero of skincare - perfect for daily use. For me, the Boots HABI Moisture Melt Cleansing Balm is the undisputed winner. It excels in its primary purpose - cleansing - and does so at a price point that's accessible to all. Why spend nearly seven times more for a few extra essential oils when HABI delivers impeccable results for just £7.50? It's now my absolute go-to cleansing balm, and I genuinely cannot recommend it highly enough. If you're searching for a budget-friendly skincare gem that doesn't compromise on performance, HABI is the answer. Labubu fans dote over ugly-cute doll trending at Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO, July 27 (Reuters) - San Diego Comic-Con is the latest location where the ugly-cute dolls named Labubu have been trending, with fans carrying the plushies globally popularized by celebrities Rihanna, Lizzo, Dua Lipa, and Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink. The wide-eyed and grinning doll was created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung allowed them to be sold by Pop Mart ( opens new tab, a Chinese toy company that sells collectible figurines, often in "blind boxes". "Blind boxes" are sealed boxes containing a surprise item that is usually part of a themed collection. Naomi Galban, from San Diego, waited in line on Sunday at the Pop Mart booth in the San Diego Convention Center for a chance to get her first Labubu. "Every time I go to a Pop Mart store, they're sold out," the 24-year-old told Reuters. She hoped to buy one for her little sister. Emily Brough, Pop Mart's Head of IP Licensing, spoke to Reuters on Thursday about Labubu fans at Comic-Con. "We love to see how fans are personalizing it (Labubu) for themselves," Brough said next to the Pop Mart booth. While Brough noted that there were many people with a Labubu strapped to their bags and backpacks at Comic-Con, the doll's popularity did not happen overnight. Labubus had a huge boost in 2019 after Pop Mart began selling them, and in 2024, when Blackpink's Lisa, who is Thai, created a buying frenzy in Thailand after she promoted Labubu on social media. Pop Mart saw sales skyrocket in North America that same year, with revenue in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025 already surpassing the full-year U.S. revenue from 2024, Pop Mart said. When he created Labubu, Lung gave the character, who is female, a backstory inspired by Nordic mythology. He called her and his other fictional creatures "The Monsters." Diana Goycortua, 25, first discovered Labubu through social media, and before she knew it, it felt like a "game" to try and collect the dolls. "It's a little bit of gambling with what you're getting," the Labubu fan from San Diego said on Sunday while waiting at the Pop Mart booth, concluding that her love for the character made it worth trying blind boxes. Goycortua already has three Labubus, and was hoping to score her a fourth one at Comic-Con.
