Euro 2025 semifinals: Live updates, highlights as England continues title defense against Italy
The UEFA Women's Euro 2025 continues on Tuesday, as England and Italy face off in the semifinals. After a stunning comeback victory over Sweden in penalties, the Lionesses will now face the surging Italians in the semifinals for a chance to keep that run going. The Lionesses took home the 2022 Euro, marking the first major soccer trophy for the country in more than 50 years — men or women's. Now, the team is one game away from defending its title, but will have to get through Italy first. Advertisement England survived a highly competitive Group D — easily this year's group of death — to advance to the knockout stage, unseating the Netherlands in the process. But Sweden took control early in the quarterfinals, earning a 2-0 lead in the first half. Despite going down, the Lionesses were able to force extra time behind goals from veteran defender Lucy Bronze and 19-year-old forward Michelle Agyemang. English keeper Hannah Hampton had three saves in a decisive penalty shootout as Bronze scored the winning kick to send England to the semis. Also, England fans will rest easy: Despite going down with a nasty-looking ankle injury partway through the game against Sweden, captain Leah Williamson is set to play on Tuesday. Italy, meanwhile, picked up a 2-1 win over Norway off a brace from striker Cristiana Girelli, with Girelli's second goal coming in the 90th minute. The Italians finished second in Group B behind a dominant-looking Spain, pulling just ahead of Belgium and Portugal on points. It may be an uphill battle for Italy — Norway has not been playing its best this tournament, and only barely pulled off its three group stage wins in a very soft group — but the team will do its best to spoil England's party. England's Jess Carter 'steps back' from social media due to racist abuse in Euros
England defender Jess Carter has revealed she will be 'stepping back' from social media as she has been the target of 'a lot of racial abuse' during the UEFA Women's Euro 2025. The 27-year-old, who has started all of the defending champions' matches so far in Switzerland, says she will be taking a break from being online to focus on the remainder of the tournament. It comes as the Lionesses will next travel to Geneva where they will face Italy in the semi-finals on Tuesday night (July 22). England's Jess Carter to 'step back' from social media due to racist abuse Writing on her Instagram account to her 148k followers, Carter said in a statement: 'A message to the fans… 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race. 'As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team any way I can. 'Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it. 'We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be a part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all. 'I'm now looking forward and focusing on putting all of my energy into helping my team.' Many of Carter's fellow teammates took to the comments section on Instagram to show their support. Lucy Bronze, Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead and Hannah Hampton were among those who left a red love heart emoji on Carter's post.

Germany women's team keeper Berger not thinking about retirement
Germany's goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger arrives at a press conference for the team ahead of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 quarter-final soccer match against France. Sebastian Christoph Gollnow/dpa Veteran goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger is not thinking about ending her career with the Germany women's national team after this summer's Euro 2025 in Switzerland. "I'm not looking so far into the future. I'm someone who lives here and now," she said in a news conference on Wednesday ahead of the Euro 2025 quarter-finals. Advertisement Germany will face France on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals. Berger, 34, said that being number one in a tournament such as the Euros is a "very, very beautiful feeling." "If someone had asked me three or four years ago if that would happen, I would have called them crazy," she added. Berger has survived thyroid cancer. She was first diagnosed with the disease in 2017 and underwent surgery. During Euro 2022, when she was a back-up keeper, Berger learned that the cancer was back, but kept it to herself at that time. She told reporters that her 92-year-old grandfather wants to come to a game, but only for the final. Advertisement "He said the quarter-finals and semi-finals aren't worth it. If he does it, he'll come to the final," she said. "He's really serious. He's actually only coming to the final. I tried to persuade him, but he's a tough nut to crack." She now has her own motivation to go far and "simply make him proud.". "My grandfather was always a very, very strict but kind man. I usually get either a thumbs up or a thumbs down from him." Her grandfather was in the stadium for the opening match against Poland, which Germany won 2-0 - and Berger got a "thumbs up."
