Grace Geyoro converted the subsequent penalty. France went on to have two goals ruled out, with Germany equalising in between through Sjoeke Nusken, and their 10 players put in an incredible shift to largely frustrated their numerically-advantaged opponents. Germany were handed a huge chance to go ahead with a penalty of their own midway through the second half, but Peyraud-Magnin stood firm and made an excellent save. The game went all the way through 120 minutes without a winner being found, before Germany edged the shootout. Spirited Switzerland fall against Spain

Friday evening marked the end of the journey for Viola Calligaris and Alisha Lehmann at UEFA Women's EURO 2025, with hosts Switzerland falling to world champions Spain despite a spirited showing. Spain came into the game as strong favourites, but the hosts proved to be a more-than-stubborn test in Bern. Despite winning an early penalty, which they missed, Spain struggled to break down a solid Swiss backline, which included Calligaris from the first minute. While Viola played the entire 90 minutes and put in a good performance despite the 2-0 loss, Alisha Lehmann came off the bench late on. BIANCONERE NEXT IN ACTION AT WEURO 2025 Next up is the fourth and final Round-of-16 game as Pauline Peyraud-Magnin and France take on Germany on Saturday evening, with kick-off set for 21:00 CEST. The winners of that game will take on Spain in the second semi-final on Wednesday, 23 July.

England boss Wiegman expecting unpredictable encounter with Sweden

England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that this evening's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 quarter-final tie against Sweden is a game that's hard to predict. The Lionesses return to Zürich to take on the Group C winners in what promises to be an epic battle. When speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, England boss Wiegman admitted that Sweden's excellent form in the group stage makes this evening's encounter unpredictable. 'I expect a very competitive game where it's very hard to predict the outcome,' Wiegman said. 'Of course, they've had a great group stage with the three wins that they've had but I think we are in a really good place too. We are ready to go, so hopefully, we can show that.' England's substitutes made an impact against Wales in their final group game. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones both came off the bench to score in a 6-1 win. Wiegman said that having substitutes that can keep the playing standards high is hugely important. She said 'It's very important because you can change in the game. There are players in the same position that have different attributes to the game, so you can change tactics and combinations a bit but still keep the levels up and try to harm your opponent. I think that's key. 'It's really important that they're ready to come in and that's what they are.' Latest opponents Sweden have delivered the most crosses in the tournament so far and are a real danger in the box. Wiegman expects more of the same from the Swedes but wants her side to control possession of the ball. She said 'That's what they want to do. We know that they have some qualities; they're good in the air and they want to put in crosses, they have some speed upfront too. We are going to try to prevent that and of course, it helps when we have the ball a bit more than they have. 'We expect what you say [crosses into the box] and some more of that.' England's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 quarter-final fixture against Sweden kicks-off at 8pm.

England qualify for EURO quarter-finals with demolition of Wales

England have qualified for the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 quarter-finals with a 6-1 victory over Wales in St. Gallen this evening. The Lionesses went into their final group game knowing that victory would see them reach the last-eight and they made easy work of a Welsh side that have given their all throughout the tournament. Advertisement The game started as an even battle but England were soon given a chance to take the lead when Carrie Jones caught Georgia Stanway in the box. The midfielder stepped up to convert the resulting penalty despite the best efforts of opposition keeper Liv Clark. England doubled their lead eight minutes later when Wales failed to defend a ball in-behind and Ella Toone fired home at the second attempt. Kiera Walsh then went close with a shot from the edge of the box before Lauren Hemp headed home from a Toone cross to make it three. Toone was also involved in England's fourth goal. She played in teammate Alessia Russo for a simple finish from just a few yards out. Advertisement It could have been five for England on the stroke of half-time but Lauren James fired over when it looked easier to score. The Lionesses continued to dominate in the second half and Clark had to be alert to deny both Jess Park and Stanway. England had to wait until the 72nd minute to finally get their fifth goal. Substitute Beth Mead showed clever feet to beat off a defender before drilling the ball home. Despite the game being beyond them, Wales never gave up and they netted a brilliant consolation goal 14 minutes from time. Jess Fishlock played in Hannah Cain and she thumped the ball beyond Hannah Hampton and into the net. Advertisement England's huge victory was sealed with a goal from Aggie Beever-Jones. She headed home from six yards with a couple of minutes to go. Tonight's result means that England will face a quarter-final tie against Sweden in Zürich on Thursday.
