Joe Rogan confronts Gavin Newsom with ‘tough' questions on pandemic record: ‘Motherf–ker'

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom was pressed to defend his COVID-19 record by podcast giant Joe Rogan on Monday. The Democratic leader, and likely 2028 presidential candidate, appeared on former U.S. Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan's podcast for a wide-ranging interview about problems facing California as well as Newsom's personal life and political career. Advertisement During the interview, Ryan asked Newsom to respond to a question sent in to him by his friend and fellow podcaster. 'Motherf—–r,' Newsom exclaimed before saying he was a fan of Rogan, who has been critical of the Democrat. Ryan warned Newsom it was a 'tough' question before reading it aloud: 'Who will be held accountable for mandating COVID-19 vaccines for children, which were unnecessary and ineffective, and who will take responsibility for the unprecedented increases in myocarditis and cancer cases among them?' 'Second to that, do you feel any remorse for that draconian decision that was obviously heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical companies' desire for maximum profit?' Youtube / Shawn Ryan Show Newsom denied that he caved to the pharmaceutical industry, saying he's passed 'some of the most progressive laws' against Big Pharma in the nation. He also defended his record on the pandemic, arguing California worked closely with the Trump administration and moved aggressively to mitigate damage from the virus, 'like many states, red states included.' 'I mean, Florida shut down their bars and restaurants before California. The question was, when did we start to unwind some of those restrictions? California was more restrictive and we were certainly aggressive at scale,' he said. Regarding vaccines, Newsom declared they 'save lives' but that he respected Rogan's question. He explained that he received 'a lot of feedback' from independent advisors regarding their safety. 'I took their advice, not as a doctor, but as a governor. So, with humility —seriously —humility and grace, I've asked them to have that report done. It's going to be done next month. And it'll be the only state that I know of that is putting out a truly objective review of what went right and what went wrong,' he added. Youtube / Shawn Ryan Show 'I know everyone's a Godd— genius now in hindsight,' Newsom declared. 'But at the time, none of us knew what we were up against, including the President of the United States, who I worked very closely with.' Newsom appeared to shift some of the scrutiny of his leadership onto President Donald Trump, claiming he worked closer with Trump than any other Democratic governor during the pandemic. 'And I say that with the kind of humility he deserves as well —grace that he deserves in terms of the decisions he made early on. We were all up against something none of us had any experience on,' he said. 4 Regarding vaccines, Newsom declared they 'save lives' but that he respected Rogan's question. Youtube / Shawn Ryan Show When asked if he had made any mistakes during the pandemic, Newsom named the closures of outdoor spaces like beaches as something he would've done differently. The governor went on to argue that California had unfairly become a symbol of failed pandemic policies when states like Florida had taken similar actions during the pandemic early on. 'We weren't the only state doing it, but the state of mind of the 'California Derangement Syndrome.' There's a 'Trump Derangement Syndrome,' no question. But there's also 'California Derangement Syndrome.' As if California stands unique in some of these interventions and respects. It's true in some but not all,' he said.

UFC 317 results: Alexandre Pantoja taps Kai Kara-France in dominant title defense

Alexandre Pantoja is still on top of the UFC's flyweight division after turning in another dominant title defense. In the co-feature of UFC 317 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Pantoja (30-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC) put his title on the line against an opponent he faced on Season 24 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Kai Kara-France. The fight was one-way traffic throughout for the champion, ultimately finding a rear-naked choke submission of Kara-France (25-12 MMA, 8-5 UFC) at 1:55 of Round 3. Pantoja wasted little time letting Kara-France know he was in for a hard fight. After touching gloves, Pantoja rapidly applied pressure with strikes, leading straight to a takedown, and ending up on Kara-France's back with a tight body triangle. Pantoja calmly worked through submission attempts while adding a few hard strikes as the time ticked away on the dominant opening round. Early in Round 2, Pantoja allowed the fight to progress on the feet for a couple of minutes. He won those striking exchanges before blitzing with a combination into a takedown. Kara-France worked his way up fairly quickly, but didn't gain momentum on the feet as Pantoja continued to land cleaner strikes. Pantoja kept the pressure high by getting Kara-France to the ground early in Round 3. He once again found the back with plenty of time to work. This time, Pantoja went harder for the submission. He found the rear-naked choke opening and clamped down until the tap came. After the fight, Joshua Van was invited into the octagon to face off with Pantoja, as he was announced as the next title challenger after defeating former title challenger Brandon Royval in a Fight of the Year candidate in the bout prior. "He's a humble guy. He deserves to fight for the title next," Pantoja told Joe Rogan. With the win, Pantoja picks up his fourth title defense as he extends his winning streak to eight. Half of the fights he's won during this stretch have come by way of a rear-naked choke. Kara-France fails to capture UFC gold again. He fought for the vacant interim title against Brandon Moreno at UFC 277, but was also finished in the third round. Since that fight, he went 1-1, dropping a split decision to Amir Albazi, but rebounding with a first-round finish of Steve Erceg to earn another shot. Up-to-the-minute UFC 317 results

Kai Kara-France vows to make history at UFC 317 as first to finish Alexandre Pantoja

Kai Kara-France is fully confident he's just a few days away from becoming the new UFC flyweight champion and intends to pull off a first in the process. In the UFC 317 co-feature at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Kara-France (25-11 MMA, 8-4 UFC) gets the chance to fight for the undisputed flyweight title for the first time in his career. He'll share the octagon with champion Alexandre Pantoja for the second time, although this instance will go on their professional records. The first meeting was on Season 24 of "The Ultimate Fighter" in a two-round exhibition bout in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Kara-France isn't putting any stock into what went down in 2016. "We're not the same fighters as nine years ago," Kara-France told MMA Junkie. "I was just a boy pretty much, figuring this thing out. Didn't know how to weight cut, I wasn't training at CKB. I was training out of Thailand back then. So, a lot of things are different, and even Pantoja. Seeing the fighter that he is now and the world champion that he is – nothing but respect. He's done amazing in his career. "But every time you talk about the next contender in the flyweight division, after my last fight, you can't deny me that I'm at the top. That's because it's a fresh matchup, something that nine years ago, is not really relevant now. People even forgot that we even did fight. It's not on our records." Respect is present on both sides coming into this championship fight. Recently, Pantoja compared Kara-France to a hard-hitting boxing legend, Mike Tyson, for his knockout ability as a flyweight. Three of Kara-France's last four wins ended in the first round due to his excellent punching power. Kara-France appreciates the comparison to Tyson, but gives credit to his heritage. "It's definitely an honor to be in the same – to be brought up as the Mike Tyson of the flyweights, but I'm the first Kai Kara-France of the flyweights," Kara-France said. "So, I've got my own name to live up to and to write. I said that in my last fight when I fought Steve Erceg, when DC (Daniel Cormier) asked me, 'How do you have all these knockouts on your record? Where does that power come from?' "I went off the cuff, I didn't really think about it too much. I just said what I was thinking, speaking my truth, saying, 'It's because I'm Māori, and that's my superpower.' That's something I tap into. It's something that anchors me, it's something that fuels me, and allows me to make sense of everything. There's no difference in this fight, I just have a stronger connection to why I'm doing this." Kara-France, who lost a challenge for the interim flyweight title against Brandon Moreno at UFC 277, vows to get the job done for the undisputed title at UFC 317. Not only does he believe he'll win, but he'll also do something that has never been done before, and that's finishing Pantoja. "Nothing but respect to Pantoja, but the way that I respect you is coming for that belt, and coming for your head," Kara-France said. "I know he hasn't been knocked out in the UFC, and he hasn't been stopped. I want to be the first one to do that and make history."

Julianna Peña reacts to UFC 316 loss: 'Calling dibs on the winner' of Harrison vs. Nunes

Julianna Peña reacts to UFC 316 loss: 'Calling dibs on the winner' of Harrison vs. Nunes Julianna Peña wants to jump right back into the title picture after UFC 316. Peña (13-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) lost her bantamweight title to Kayla Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) by submission in Saturday's co-headliner at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Awaiting the outcome of this fight was former UFC dual-champion Amanda Nunes, who will come out of retirement to challenge Harrison. The pair faced off in the octagon after the fight. "The Venezuelan Vixen" took to Instagram to open up on her loss, and wants the winner of Harrison vs. Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC). "Thank you to the fans who lifted me with your love and encouragement during this #fightcamp.I love you all and feel so grateful for all the support and energy you guys give me—It truly means the world 🥹 ! I'm sorry I wasn't able to get the job done 💔I'm super disappointed but hats off to Kayla on her win! Time to get healed up and get ready for her next fight because I'm calling dibs on the winner !" Peña claimed the bantamweight title the first time with a stunning upset of Nunes at UFC 269. She then lost her title to Nunes in their rematch at UFC 277, but wasn't able to get her trilogy bout when Nunes opted to retire and relinquish the belt. Peña then defeated Raquel Pennington at UFC 307 to reclaim the bantamweight title, but lost it again when she was submitted by Harrison at UFC 316.

UFC 316: Julianna Peña vs. Kayla Harrison odds, picks and predictions

UFC 316: Julianna Peña vs. Kayla Harrison odds, picks and predictions In a 5-round women's bantamweight championship bout on the main card, Julianna Peña and Kayla Harrison meet Saturday at UFC 316 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The bout is expected to start approximately at 11:45 p.m. ET. Early prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN+ / Disney+) with the prelims set for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN / ESPN+ / Disney+) and the main card slated for 10 p.m. ET (Pay-Per-View). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's UFC odds around the UFC 316: Peña vs. Harrison odds, and make our expert UFC picks and predictions. Records: Peña (13-5-0) | Harrison (18-1-0) Peña picked up the championship belt in December 2011 from Amanda Nunes at UFC 269, posting a Round-2 submission win. But then Peña lost the strap in the rematch at UFC 277 in a unanimous-decision setback July 2022. She was expected to face Nunes in a trilogy fight at UFC 289 in June 2023, but Peña suffered broken ribs in training and had to pull out. 'The Venezuelan Vixen' bounced back at UFC 307 after more than a 2-year layoff, topping Raquel Pennington for the belt via split decision at UFC 307 Oct. 5, 2024. After 3 consecutive fights ending via submission from October 2020 to December 2021 -- Peña went 2-1 -- she had back-to-back 5-round decisions -- the rematch loss to Nunes and the title win vs. Pennington. Peña has actually gone the distance 5 times in her past 9 bouts with her last KO/TKO win coming back in April 2015. So, that method can mostly be ignored when it comes to wagering. Harrison gets a crack at the title just 3 fights into her UFC career. She opened with a Round-2 submission of Holly Holm at UFC 300 April 2024, before stopping Ketlen Vieira at UFC 307 via unanimous decision last October. Harrison has 3 consecutive victories across all levels since losing a title bout in the 2022 PFL World Championships to Larissa Pacheco Nov. 25, 2022. Harrison has gone the distance 3 times in her past 4 pro bouts. The southpaw Harrison is 34 years old, and she has a 4.87-to-3.25 significant-strikes-landed-per-minute advantage in this matchup. However, Peña has a tremendous 56.25% takedown-accuracy percentage, and she does great work on the canvas. The champ also holds a 3-inch reach advantage, so she'll be able to push and pull the challenger out at her discretion. Fight result (2-way line) : Peña +475 (bet $100 to win $475) | Harrison -700 (bet $700 to win $100) : Peña +475 (bet $100 to win $475) | Harrison -700 (bet $700 to win $100) Total rounds: 3.5 rounds (Over +100 | Under -135) 3.5 rounds (Over +100 | Under -135) Will the fight go the distance? (Yes +175 | No +250) UFC 316: Peña vs. Harrison picks and predictions It's time for Harrison (-700) to ascend to the throne as champ, but it isn't as huge of a disparity as the sportsbooks are making it out to be. Peña (+475) is a huge underdog, which is stunning considering she is the current title holder. We saw Peña as a giant +600 underdog against Nunes at UFC 269 when she picked up the surprising round-2 submission win. She lost to Nunes in the rematch but rebounded to regain the title vs. Pennington. She has been through the emotions and been through the wars, which will be an advantage against Harrison, who just doesn't have that experience to tap into. PASS. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Peña has 3 submission results in the past 5 fights, and 4 in the previous 7 outings since January 2017. For Harrison, she has 2 submission results in her past 5 pro fights. As such, betting SUBMISSION (+100) in "how the fight will end' method is a strong value at even-money ... and we don't need to worry about who is the winner. If you like the current champ, PEÑA BY SUBMISSION (+1200) on the 7-way line is a low-risk, high-reward possibility. OVER 3.5 ROUNDS (+100) is even-money is also a good play. Harrison is an upstart, and Peña has been going deep lately. She has gone the distance in the past 2 fights, and Harrison has gone the distance in 3 of the past 4 pro bouts.
