What UT officials said about Austin Regional status after storm damages Disch-Falk Field
Update, Thursday at 9:00 p.m.: The center field wall and a new, shorter batter's eye are back in place. A severe thunderstorm that rolled through Austin on Wednesday evening caused damage to UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the home of Texas baseball. Advertisement Wind blew green panels off the batter's eye and into the outfield. The fencing that forms the structure of the batter's eye was also forced out of place, with debris scattered across the warning track and throughout deep center field. The Longhorns are scheduled to host the NCAA Tournament's Austin Regional beginning on Friday. As of Wednesday evening, a spokesperson for the Texas athletic department said the schedule for the regional remained the same. Work had already begun on the damaged wall late Wednesday night. "As of this moment, the Austin Regional is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.' Texas baseball vs Houston Christian game score: Replay as Longhorns win regional opener
For the Texas baseball program, the hunt for a seventh national championship began on Friday. Texas opened up regional play with a 7-1 win over Houston Christian at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. A 64-time qualifier for college baseball's postseason, Texas is chasing its first national title since the 2005 season. Earlier this week, Texas was awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA's 64-team field. A little less than two months later, the Longhorns used a five-run fifth inning to pull away from the Huskies. Texas has recorded six of this afternoon's seven hits in the fifth inning, but the Longhorns were also assisted by the Houston Christian defense. Texas led off the inning with an error by HCU second baseman Jeremy Rader, which allowed Jonah Williams to reach base. Williams' foot appeared to hit the shoulder area of HCU second baseman Jeremy Rader, who was attempting to snag an off-target throw from catcher Luke Bard. After walking off the field with trainers to the Texas locker room, Radar was replaced at second base by Graham Laxton. Advertisement Willams got on base to lead off the inning on an error by Radar. It was Radar's second error of the game. End 4: Texas 2, Houston Christian 1 Through four frames, Texas has been out-hit by a 5-1 margin. End 3: Texas 2, Houston Christian 0 Texas is on the board first after an RBI groundout by Ethan Mendoza scored Will Gasparino from third base. Reliever Grayson Saunier replaced Ethan Walker and retired Jeremy Radar on a pop-up to end the threat. End 1: Houston Christian 0, Texas 0 Texas got its first two runners aboard on Friday, but a defensive highlight prevented the Longhorns from scoring.
