For the Texas baseball program, the hunt for a seventh national championship began on Friday.
Texas opened up regional play with a 7-1 win over Houston Christian at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. A 64-time qualifier for college baseball's postseason, Texas is chasing its first national title since the 2005 season. Earlier this week, Texas was awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA's 64-team field.

Texas (43-12) and Houston Christian (32-24) had already played once this season as UT recorded a run-ruled rout of the Huskies in Austin on April 8. A little less than two months later, the Longhorns used a five-run fifth inning to pull away from the Huskies.
More: The ABCs of the Austin Regional
Texas will play either UTSA (44-13) or Kansas State (31-24) on Saturday evening in the winner's bracket of the Austin Regional. Since this is a double-elimination competition, Houston Christian will play the UTSA-Kansas State loser tomorrow.

End 8: Texas 7, Houston Christian 1
Texas got its first two runners aboard in the eighth inning but was unable to add to its lead. Hudson Hamilton will remain on the mound and attempt to close out this game.
Mid 8: Texas 7, Houston Christian 1
Texas is closing in on its 13th straight regional win in Austin. Texas reliever Hudson Hamilton has pitched 2 ⅔ innings of no-hit relief for the Longhorns.
Mid 6: Texas 7, Houston Christian 1
Texas reliever Hudson Hamilton got out of a bases-loaded jam as Houston Christian attempted to rally in the sixth inning. With one out, Hamilton picked HCU catcher Luke Bard off of third base. Hamilton then caught Graham Laxton looking at a third strike to end the inning.
End 5: Texas 7, Houston Christian 1
After waiting the whole day for a big hit, Texas got a few in the fifth inning. A two-out, two-run single by Kimble Schuessler doubled the Longhorns' score at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas then tacked on RBI singles by Adrian Rodriguez and Casey Borba and Will Gasparino's run-scoring double.
Texas has recorded six of this afternoon's seven hits in the fifth inning, but the Longhorns were also assisted by the Houston Christian defense. Texas led off the inning with an error by HCU second baseman Jeremy Rader, which allowed Jonah Williams to reach base. Due to that miscue, all five of the runs that Texas scored with two outs in the fifth inning were credited as unearned.

Houston Christian has committed three errors this afternoon. Only one of the runs scored by Texas today has been earned.
Houston Christian loses 2B Jeremy Rader after on-field collision
A scary play at second base has cost Houston Christian its starting second baseman. While trying to steal second in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jonah Williams slid into second base with his cleats up. Williams' foot appeared to hit the shoulder area of HCU second baseman Jeremy Rader, who was attempting to snag an off-target throw from catcher Luke Bard.
After walking off the field with trainers to the Texas locker room, Radar was replaced at second base by Graham Laxton.

Willams got on base to lead off the inning on an error by Radar. It was Radar's second error of the game.
End 4: Texas 2, Houston Christian 1
Through four frames, Texas has been out-hit by a 5-1 margin. The Longhorns' only hit so far has been Jonah Williams' infield single in the third inning.
Mid 4: Texas 2, Houston Christian 1
Just a few minutes after his error led to a Texas run, Houston Christian's Jeremy Radar produced a two-out double to left field to help Houston Christian cut the Texas lead in half. Houston Christian, however, left two runners in scoring position to end the inning.
The Huskies have stranded four runners in scoring position over the past three innings.
End 3: Texas 2, Houston Christian 0
Texas is on the board first after an RBI groundout by Ethan Mendoza scored Will Gasparino from third base. Gasparino got aboard on a leadoff walk and then scooted around the bases on a steal, Jonah Williams' infield single and that aforementioned groundout.
Texas added to its advantage on a two-out error by Houston Christian second baseman Jeremy Radar, who failed to field Max Belyeu's sharply-hit grounder with Williams on third base. That was the 69th error of HCU's season.
Mid 3: Houston Christian 0, Texas 0
For the second straight inning, Houston Christian got a runner to second base. But the Huskies remain scoreless after an inning-ending groundout.
Mid 2: Houston Christian 0, Texas 0
After Houston Christian got two runners aboard with a pair infield singles, Texas made a two-out pitching change. Reliever Grayson Saunier replaced Ethan Walker and retired Jeremy Radar on a pop-up to end the threat.
End 1: Houston Christian 0, Texas 0
Texas got its first two runners aboard on Friday, but a defensive highlight prevented the Longhorns from scoring. With one out and runners on second and third base, Kimble Schuessler lined a Parker Edwards pitch into right field. Houston Christian senior Tevis Payne made the catch and then rifled the baseball home in time to get Texas leadoff hitter Ethan Mendoza, who had tagged from third base.
Mid 1: Houston Christian 0, Texas 0
To begin his second start at Texas, Ethan Walker quickly worked his way through the first inning. While throwing just six pitches, Walker retired the three Huskies he faced on two fly balls and a groundout.
