UFO 50 launches on Nintendo Switch 2 after surprise Indie World Showcase reveal
Nintendo's latest Indie World Showcase included a surprise announcement as Mossmouth's UFO 50 arrived on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 immediately after the event. The game is available now for $25 via the Nintendo eShop. Originally released on PC in 2024, UFO 50 was recognised by CNET as one of the year's standout indie titles. The game is notable for featuring 50 different retro-inspired 8-bit style games spanning genres such as platformers, shooters, and role-playing games. Each title was created by a different independent developer but is tied together by the fictional backstory of UFOSoft, a make-believe studio that supposedly produced the games decades ago without releasing them. Some of the included titles are designed for single-player experiences, while others support multiplayer gameplay. Although the collection draws heavily on the look and feel of classic NES-era games, Mossmouth has incorporated modern design elements to ensure the games appeal to contemporary audiences. In addition to UFO 50, the Indie World Showcase revealed more than a dozen other indie titles. Highlights included Little Kitty, Big City, Content Warning, Winter Burrow, and Mina the Hollower. Release dates vary, with some arriving in the coming weeks and others scheduled for 2026. A physical edition of UFO 50 is also available for preorder through Fangamer for $35. Players can choose to experience the collection on either the original Nintendo Switch or the newer Switch 2, with both versions offering the full set of games. UFO 50, a brilliant tribute to retro gaming, is out for the Switch right now
When UFO 50 , the dizzyingly ambitious fictional game compendium from the creator of Spelunky , landed on PC last year, a Switch port felt inevitable. We've had to wait nearly 12 months for that to happen, but it's finally here. Rudely shadow-dropped into a sizzle reel at the end of Nintendo's (otherwise largely underwhelming) Indie World showcase this morning, UFO 50 is available on Switch (and presumably Switch 2, barring any strange compatibility issues) for $25 right now. For those who missed it on PC, you're getting a wildly varied set of retro-styled games belonging to a console that never existed, all designed by a made-up developer called UFO Soft from the 80s. Confused? The high concept fictional premise is basically just a good excuse for the six modern-day indie developers actually responsible for the game to pay tribute to the 8- and 16-bit games they remember so fondly. The included games span just about every genre of the era, from platformers and puzzle games, to turn-based strategy, pure arcade titles and bafflingly fully-fledged RPGs. UFO 50 really is a remarkable achievement, and the Switch is the perfect platform for it. The end of the game's PC exclusivity could mean that Xbox and PlayStation ports will also arrive at some point, but it arrives on Switch as a console exclusive for now at least.

The August 2025 Indie World presentation featured eighteen games in all, including newly announced titles, announcements for ports of existing titles, updates to previously known games, and more. At a snappy 15 minutes long, not much time was spent on each game — but there was enough in there to get the gist of most games in the presentation. The big hitters for the Indie World presentation were bookended at the start and the end of the presentation. The presentation kicked off with Mina the Hollower, a brand-new NES-inspired Zelda-like RPG from Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games, which after years of development finally got a release date in October for both Switch and Switch 2, on the same date as the previously announced PC release date. The presentation then wrapped up with a fantastic shadow drop — UFO 50, an excellent collection of 50 small games and one of the best games of 2024, is out now on Switch.
