Thrice rejected for MBBS, disabled to get entry to AIIMS after Supreme Court order
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has ordered that Kabir Paharia , who was rejected thrice by medical boards and judged ineligible to pursue MBBS, be given admission to MBBS in AIIMS, New Delhi, in the 2025-26 a fourth medical board, set up on the SC's orders, declared Kabir eligible in its April 24 report, the court noted that a candidate who secured a rank lower than his had been granted admission under the SC disability quota in MBBS at AIIMS Delhi for 2024-25. Since the 2024-25 academic session must have progressed significantly, it would not be expedient to grant him admission to that session, concluded the court. The court also stated that in view of the high marks secured by Kabir in the NEET UG 2024 examination (542 out of 720), he shall not be required to undergo the 2025 examination. The court held that denial of admission to Kabir was "grossly illegal, arbitrary", and violative of his fundamental rights. "Such action not only reflects institutional bias and systemic discrimination but also undermines the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination enshrined in our constitutional framework. The constitutional mandate of substantive equality demands that persons with disabilities (PwD) and PwBD (people with benchmark disabilities) be afforded reasonable accommodations rather than subjected to exclusionary practices based on unfounded presumptions about their capabilities," stated the court in its order. Kabir Paharia had cleared class X with 91.5% and class XII with 90% marks without the help of a scribe to write the exams. Kabir's disability is described as "congenital absence of multiple fingers in both hands as well as involvement of left foot (2nd and 3rd toe), the extent whereof has been assessed at 42%." Three of the fingers on his left hand are half-grown, as are two on his right hand. On his left foot, two toes are half-grown. The court further directed the National Medical Commission to complete the process of revising the guidelines in light of its earlier judgments, which emphasised functional assessment rather than an assessment of the extent of disability, within a period of two months and at any cost before the counselling for the 2025-2026 session commences.

Bihar: CBI secures four-day remand of NEET paper leak mastermind
Patna: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday secured four days' custody of Sanjeev Mukhiya, the alleged mastermind behind the NEET paper leak and several other examination scandals in Bihar. While the agency had sought a seven-day remand to interrogate Mukhiya, the court approved only four days. Mukhiya, who is currently lodged in Beur Jail, was produced before the court after the completion of a prior two-day remand granted to the Economic Offences Unit (EOU). During EOU's interrogation, Sanjeev Mukhiya reportedly made several shocking revelations, including his ambition to use the proceeds and influence of leaked exams to elevate his wife to a prominent political position. Mukhiya evaded arrest for nearly 11 months, despite a Rs 3 lakh bounty placed against him. He was finally arrested on April 24 during a raid by Patna Police at an apartment in Danapur, Patna, following a tip-off. CBI investigators are now preparing to grill Mukhiya with specific questions related to the NEET paper leak, as they attempt to uncover the larger nexus of organised examination fraud. Officials believe that more arrests and significant disclosures could follow in the coming days. Mukhiya is believed to have orchestrated multiple high-profile leaks beyond NEET, making him one of the most wanted figures in India's exam corruption cases. This development comes amid growing public and political outcry over the sanctity of national-level entrance exams and the need for stringent reforms to prevent such leaks in the future. Sanjeev Mukhiya is believed to have leaked the NEET UG 2024 question paper before the exam held on May 5, 2024. Investigations revealed that students were charged up to Rs 40 lakh each and made to memorise answers at a private school in Patna. Mukhiya was allegedly running an organised gang in Bihar to leak the question paper. His son, along with a number of relatives and youths of Nalanda, were involved in the question paper leak scam.

"The accused Pankaj Kumar was clandestinely allowed entry into the control room by Ahsanul Haque, the Principal, and Imtiyaz Alam, the Vice Principal of the school, as part of the conspiracy. Pankaj Kumar tampered with the hinges of the trunk containing the question papers, removed one question paper, photographed all its pages, replaced the paper and resealed the trunk, and exited the control room," the CBI stated. Following this, the solved question papers were then distributed to the candidates present at the Raj Guest House, Hazaribagh. Further, the solved question paper was scanned and sent digitally to predetermined locations where the members of the accused gang received it. Only those who paid in advance could enter these locations. After their exams, the candidates were prohibited from taking any printed copies with them.
