Scientists try to bring 12-foot bird back from 600-year extinction – and director Peter Jackson is helping them
©UK Independent Today at 00:30 A Texas-based company with backing from Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson is trying to bring a giant bird back from extinction. Colossal Biosciences has announced an effort to genetically engineer living birds to resemble the extinct South Island giant moa, which once stood 12 feet tall (3.6 metres), with $15m (€13m) in funding from Jackson. The collaboration also includes the New Zealand-based Ngai Tahu Research Centre.

Most people in France, Germany, Italy and Spain would be in favour of UK rejoining EU on new terms, poll finds

At the same time, most Britons are in favour of rejoining the EU, the YouGov survey of six western European nations found, but only if they could keep the opt-outs the UK previously had, such as remaining outside the Schengen zone and keeping its own currency.

Hero dog saves 67 villagers from landslide in India's Himalayan region
©UK Independent Today at 00:30 A dog's frantic barking in the middle of the night saved the lives of 67 people in a Himalayan village before a massive landslide swept away their homes. Residents of Siyathi village in Mandi district, in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh, said their five-month-old dog began barking around 1am on June 30, just as heavy rains triggered a slope collapse that destroyed at least a dozen houses.
