Trump says proud of stopping Pak-India war

Photo:REUTER Listen to article US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan's leadership during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House on Thursday, repeating his stance that he saved the world from a major crisis by preventing a war between the nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. The US-German summit at the Trump's Oval Office was the first since Merz's election as the German Chancellor on May 6. Their talks covered a range of topics, including the wars in Europe, South Asia and the Middle East, besides the US-China trade issue and bilateral matters, according to media reports. During the meeting Trump insisted that the reduction in tension was possible because of his efforts and cooperation with the leaders of India and Pakistan. He praised the Indian and Pakistani leaderships and stressed that in the event of a nuclear conflict, the entire world could have been in danger. Taking pride in his role as the peacemaker, Trump regretted that he did not get the recognition he deserved for this important diplomatic achievement. "No one else could have done it," he said, referring to the ceasefire he had announced on May 10, and later confirmed by both the countries. Tensions between India and Pakistan reached a boiling point after an attack in the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on April 22, which killed 26 people. India swiftly blamed Pakistan, but did not present any evidence. However, the situation escalated as missile strikes and air raids rocked both nations, resulting in dozens of casualties between May 7 and 10. Trump said his diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation involved intense talks with both sides. "Pakistan has very strong leadership. Some people won't like when I say that, but it is what it is," Trump said. "I spoke to very talented people on both sides," he added. "They stopped that war. I was very proud of that."

German minister notes 'harsh tone' in US ahead of Merz-Trump meeting

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for the preservation of the well-established US-German relations ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's meeting with US President Donald Trump. "Yes, the tone hasn't been as harsh as this for a long time," Wadephul said in the evening at a meeting of former Arthur F Burns Fellowship scholars in Berlin. He diagnosed "profound changes in the US itself with an unknown outcome" and a new style of interaction following the Trump administration's inauguration, "which is unsettling and also disconcerting." However, the conservative politician stressed that one must "not panic." "Instead, we must endure this storm phase by first focusing on our own interests." This also means that Germany must strengthen its defence capabilities, safeguard its trade interests, and "articulate [its] understanding of freedom of expression and academic freedom." Wadephul, who visited the US capital Washington last week, assessed the talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio as a positive signal: "They have made me confident that we can reach agreements in mutual interest even on issues where we have differences of opinion." Difficult talks for Merz Merz is travelling to the United States on Wednesday and is due to speak with Trump at the White House on Thursday. During the election campaign, the chancellor sharply criticized the US government's interference in German domestic politics. Currently, Trump's threat of permanently high tariffs on EU goods is also straining the relationship. With regard to the Ukraine war, Merz, along with other European leaders, is striving for a common stance with the US towards Russia. There is anticipation as to whether Merz will have to contend with a similarly unfriendly reception at the White House as, for example, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Wadephul stresses US support Wadephul emphasized that the US had repeatedly supported Germany after liberation from Nazi rule during reconstruction and also during reunification. "We should and will never forget that." The Arthur F Burns Fellowship is a trans-Atlantic exchange programme for journalists, named after a former US Federal Reserve chairman and ambassador to Germany.

Germany's Wadephul sees alignment with US on Ukraine despite wrinkles

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul sees a fundamental alignment with the United States in the struggle for peace in Ukraine, despite existing differences. "In many issues, as we were able to ascertain again today, we share the same interests and goals - for example, when it comes to a sustainable peace for Ukraine," the conservative politician said after his inaugural visit with his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday. He had earlier exchanged views with Rubio for about 15 minutes in private and then for another 30 minutes together with the delegation. "We both want an immediate ceasefire. This has been repeatedly stressed," said Wadephul. "And that is why we agreed today that we will closely coordinate the next steps so that [Russian President] Valdimir Putin finally comes to the negotiating table, so that Russia finally enters into serious negotiations." It was important to maintain the pressure, Wadephul said. Wadephul wanted to advocate for a trans-Atlantic alliance in dealing with Putin and other current crises during his meeting with Rubio, given the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine. Wadephul's trip also served as preparation for a visit to the US by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz has announced his intention to travel to Washington shortly and meet with Trump. Challenging short trip It was probably the most challenging inaugural trip for the new German foreign minister so far. The US is Germany's most important partner outside the EU. However, the trans-Atlantic relationship is not without tension. US President Donald Trump and his administration are considered unpredictable. Wadephul sees "mature, viable partnership" Wadephul highlighted the close trans-Atlantic ties with the US and their efforts to combat Nazi terror and to promote German reunification. "Especially in challenging times, this common foundation is central," he said. "This is also true when we have different perspectives, when we occasionally have disagreements." US-German relations "are close," he said, adding: "You can also deal with each other clearly and confidently. That is part of a mature, viable partnership." Little time for Wadephul and no joint appearance There was no joint appearance by Wadephul and Rubio in front of journalists, as has been usual with Rubio recently. This is likely to be quite different during the visit Merz is aiming for with Trump in the Oval Office of the White House. Wadephul had problems meeting other high-ranking politicians besides his counterpart during the inaugural trip to the US capital, which was requested immediately after taking office - such as members of the Senate, as is often customary on such trips. On Wednesday morning, the German minister met with representatives of US think tanks. Wadephul has intensive contact with Rubio Despite important appointments in Berlin - such as a Cabinet meeting, the visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, or the first meeting of the new coalition committee - Wadephul nevertheless decided on the one-day short trip. He was likely hoping to expand contact with his US counterpart, who is considered a close ally of Trump. Rubio has recently also become the interim national security advisoer to the president, bringing him even closer to him. The former senator loyally represents his boss' line, presenting himself as an uncompromising hardliner. For the first time since taking office, Wadephul and Rubio exchanged views personally in mid-May at an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in the Turkish city of Antalya, with telephone contacts having occurred more frequently. It was said that a constructive and productive atmosphere prevailed. Birthday gift for football fan Rubio The fact that Rubio only had about 45 minutes for Wadephul - including the obligatory photo session at the beginning - may also be due to Rubio celebrating his 54th birthday on Wednesday. Wadephul brought football fan Rubio a framed poster as a gift, depicting a game by his favourite football team, the Miami Dolphins, against the Kansas City Chiefs on November 5, 2023, which took place as part of the NFL-Frankfurt Games. Commemoration of Jewish attack victims In the afternoon, Wadephul laid two roses at the Jewish Museum in Washington in memory of the two Jewish victims of an attack on May 21. A representative of the Israeli embassy in Washington was also present. The couple, employees of the Israeli embassy in the US capital, were shot dead when leaving an event at the museum, apparently for anti-Semitic reasons. Meeting at Organization of American States Subsequently, the minister was briefed by Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Albert Ramdin on the work of the organization. Founded in 1948 and to which all states of the Americas belong, the OAS has its headquarters in Washington. The goals of the OAS include securing peace and stability, strengthening democracy, and promoting press and freedom of expression. Wadephul then planned to visit Arlington National Cemetery.

German top diplomat Wadephul to make inaugural visit to Washington

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is to travel to the United States on Tuesday for an inaugural visit. Wadephul was invited by his counterpart Marco Rubio for a meeting in Washington on Wednesday, the Foreign Office said in Berlin on Monday. The topics to be discussed are US-German relations, further support for Ukraine, trans-Atlantic security and defence policy, and the situation in the Middle East. Trade relations between the US and the European Union are also on the agenda amid a smouldering conflict over the high tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said that the two sides would discuss all major international challenges and crises in order to find joint solutions. She called the US Germany's closest partner outside the EU.
