What is social media vetting? The new policy that could decide international students' futures in the US

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered the suspension of student visa processing as President Donald Trump 's administration intensifies the vetting of applicants' social media activity, according to an internal cable. This move is part of a broader strategy to tighten immigration controls, particularly in response to recent campus protests in support of Palestine. The cable stated, 'Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued septel, which we anticipate in the coming days.' The term 'septel' refers to a separate telegram with detailed instructions, as used within the State Department.
