Use tech to expand services of IRCS: Guv
1 2 3 4 Mangaluru: Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot said the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) should adopt technology by using digital platforms to expand its humanitarian services. He was speaking after inaugurating the new centenary building of the IRCS Dakshina Kannada (DK) unit at the Old DC office premises on Saturday. Suggesting the IRCS extend its services beyond the traditional approach, he insisted that there is a need for the involvement of more young volunteers in community service through the Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross units. He called upon IRCS DK members to put in efforts into making the new centenary building serve as a hub for public welfare activities. "Being a symbol of humanity and selfless service, the IRCS has upheld its ideals for decades. It has been standing as a supporting force with its humanitarian services in times of illness and crisis. The only religion before the IRCS is humanity, and it works for the welfare of society, thereby offering happiness to all," he said. Rapid urbanisation and rising health challenges increase the scope of IRCS services, he said, adding that the organisation has expanded its services to all villages and cities, offering medical care, emergency services, and promoting blood donation. As an international organisation, it has a presence in over 190 countries, he said. IRCS Karnataka has bagged the national award twice for its active involvement in humanitarian services like health initiatives and awareness campaigns. Assembly speaker UT Khader said that the DK unit of the IRCS, which has been offering dedicated service in the district for the past 70 years, has instilled humanitarian values among the young generation. He said the IRCS should continue its effective campaigns by motivating young people to donate blood. "There was a time when people had apprehensions about blood donation. The campaigns of the IRCS instilled confidence among people and made them understand that blood donation is the greatest gift one can give," he added. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, lauding the efforts of DK IRCS, said that he will extend his support to avail funds through CSR initiatives and govt schemes to expand the Red Cross Society activities in the district. "The govt may not be able to help everyone directly, but organisations like the IRCS can reach the masses," he said. A digital souvenir titled 'Samarpana' was released on the occasion. IRCS Karnataka vice-president Bhaskar Rao, IRCS Dakshina Kannada president Dr Shantharam Shetty, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath were present.

Rising demand for girls-only colleges in Dakshina Kannada; Karnataka govt sanctions two institutions
MANGALURU: In a notable shift in parental preferences, Dakshina Kannada district is witnessing a growing demand for girls-only colleges, particularly from sections of the minority community. Responding to this trend, the Karnataka government has sanctioned two new girls' educational institutions in the Mangaluru Assembly (Ullal) constituency, which is represented by Assembly Speaker UT Khader. The Department of Minorities has sanctioned Rs 17 crore for a new educational complex offering schooling from Class 1 through degree level. The facility, which will cater to both residential and day scholars, will be established between Konaje and Pajir. Additionally, the Waqf Department will develop a girls' PU college in Ullal town. Both institutions will follow a 75:25 reservation ratio for minority and non-minority students, respectively. The move aligns with a larger trend in the region. In Derlakatte, a government PU college, that was co-educational until last academic year, has now been converted into a girls-only institution, citing poor male enrolment and complaints about disruptive behaviour from some boys. In 2022-23, only 41 of the 91 enrolled were boys. The change was made after a proposal from the College Development Committee, led by MLA Khader, and was supported by parents. Officials and educators say that the demand for girls-only colleges rose sharply in Dakshina Kannada post the 'Hijab episode'. According to the principal of a government women's college in Mangaluru, the dropout rate among Muslim girls tends to increase after Class 10 and PUC, especially when access to nearby girls-only colleges is lacking. Early marriage and parental hesitation toward co-education have also been cited as contributing factors.

Railways approves underpass for Thokkottu-Olapete link
Mangaluru: Southern Railways has approved the construction of a pedestrian railway underpass at Thokkottu to connect Olapete. Residents of Olapete in Ullal, one of the oldest towns in the area, have faced difficulty for a long time to cross railway tracks due to a lack of infrastructure. With no railway gate, foot overbridge, or underpass, people were forced to walk across the tracks illegally. Following repeated representations and inspections, Southern Railway approved a pedestrian underpass of 3m to connect Thokkottu with Olapete, said speaker and Mangaluru MLA UT Khader. The underpass will be built for Rs 2 crore, he said. "The access from Thokkottu to Olapete is a major stretch that connects the national highway with Ullal town. However, the railway tracks on the stretch cause inconvenience for thousands of people, including students and residents. They are forced to cross the railway track on the stretch to access markets, schools, colleges, mosques, temples, and churches. Although the railway department long demanded the closure of the level crossing due to safety concerns and past mishaps, local authorities so far maintained access in consideration of public convenience," the MLA said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like അപൂർവ്വയിനം റോസാ വിത്തുകൾ: വേഗത്തിലുള്ള ഡെലിവറി Rare Climbing Rose Seeds Learn More Undo "With the railway department giving approval for constructing the underpass, the work will be taken up within three to four months. Once completed, pedestrians and two-wheelers will be allowed," he added. Ullal Students Union, in association with various like-minded organisations, held protests to draw the attention of the people's representatives and the railways to the demands of an underpass. Organisations also submitted memoranda to people's representatives and officials in the past.

Mangaluru: Speaker and MLA of Mangaluru, UT Khader, said that a drone survey will soon be conducted in Ullal to identify encroachments on rajakaluves and other stormwater drainages. He told reporters on Monday that the move comes in the wake of widespread waterlogging and artificial flooding reported during the monsoon. Rampant encroachments on natural pathways are a major reason for recurring flooding, the MLA said. Stating the situation as a wake-up call, Khader said a situation similar to what Bengaluru witnessed in recent years may take place in Ullal too if necessary steps are not taken immediately. On the proposed drone survey, he said it will help in mapping out all encroached zones. He said awareness campaigns will be launched to encourage people to voluntarily clear the illegal structures built on rajakaluve and other water pathways. Women's college in Ullal Khader said that the state cabinet has sanctioned a residential women's college for minorities in Ullal taluk.
