As part of the ritual, 25 truck loads of firewood will be collected and stacked in the shape of chariot on the north-eastern side of Madhwa Sarovara. This ritual is symbolic of readiness for the upcoming paryaya. Talking to reporters in Udupi on Friday, Diwan of Shiroor Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Udupi, Uday Kumar Saralatthaya, said Baale Muhurtha and Akki Muhurtha, the first two stages of Paryaya preparations, were already completed. Kattige Muhurta as part of Paryaya on July 13

Mangaluru: The third ritual as part of the Paryaya festival, the 'Kattige Muhurta', will be held on July 13. Udaya Kumar Saralatthaya, the Diwana of Sri Shiroor Mutt, Udupi, told reporters on Friday, that the 'Kattige Muhurta' is the third ritual being held prior to the Paryaya festival in Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt. The 'Akki Muhurta' to offer 'annadana' during the next Paryaya of 2026-2028, was already held. It is a custom in the mutt to offer 'naivedya' to the deity by cooking rice and cereals using only firewood. The preparation for the collection of firewood for this purpose is known as Kattige Muhurta, he said. "Devotees consider naivedya as prasada. It is believed that Srimad Madhvacharya himself offered naivedya to Sri Krishna. Devotees accept this naivedya as prasada and hence the kattige muhurta has its own significance. The ritual will be held during the 'Simha Lagna' at 9.15 am on Sunday. There is a rule to collect wood during the month of Aashada. This is because, during the rainy season, the cut trees can sprout again and grow for up to 16 years. About 25 truckloads of wood from the kari (karmaru) tree are gathered and stacked in an artistic chariot model approximately 50ft high and 25ft wide at the northeastern corner of the Madhva Sarovara," he explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensia privată facultativă NN Pensia Facultativă NN Vezi oferta Undo Dignitaries, scholars, diwanas, and devotees offer prayers at the shrines of Chandramoulishwara, Sri Anantheshwara, Sri Krishna, Mukhya Prana, and Garuda prior to the Kattige Muhurta ritual. This religious tradition is being followed in Udupi since the Sri Vadiraja era, he said, adding that the ritual will be held at an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakh. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that Udupi City Municipal Council has earmarked Rs 50 lakh to illuminate the city during the 10-day Shiroor Paryaya festival to be held in Jan, 2026.

Forest officials visit home of boy who flagged helpline failure in letter to Karnataka CM

Udupi: Forest officials visited the home of Class 10 student Deepesh Deepak Shenoy in Udupi after he wrote to the chief minister highlighting the failure of the department's wildlife helpline during a recent incident. It is learnt that Kundapur sub-division ACF Prakash Poojary, range forest officer (RFO) Varijakshi, deputy RFO Shivanand, and beat officer Devraj Pana visited the boy's residence to take stock of the situation on Thursday. ACF Prakash Poojary told TOI, "This incident occurred due to a communication gap. We do not ignore such calls. In this case, the staff the boy tried to contact were in interior areas with poor connectivity. The range officer even tried to return the call as soon as he got the message," he said. Deepak Shenoy, the boy's father, said that in addition to forest department officials, personnel from the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) also reached out to verify the incident. "We told them that my son only wanted to confirm whether the snake was venomous so he could act accordingly," he said. "He wrote to the CM, forest minister, and DFO to ensure the helpline works when it's needed most," Deepak added. The incident, reported by TOI on June 12 under the headline 'Student rescues snake, flags forest department helpline failure in letter to CM', took place on June 8 at the family's home in Kukkikatte, Udupi. Deepesh, a student of TA Pai English Medium School, Kunjibettu, responded calmly when a snake slithered into their home. With guidance from his father, he immediately called the wildlife helpline (1926) and was redirected to the local range office. Despite repeated calls, sharing photos of the snake, and informing officials about the presence of senior citizens at home, no assistance arrived, he alleged. With no response by late afternoon, Deepesh sought help from a local wildlife expert, who identified the reptile as a Buff Striped Keelback—a non-venomous species. He then safely released the snake back into the wild. Following the incident being reported, Deepak said they received supportive calls from various well-wishers and organisations recommending Deepesh for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar and Shaurya Award for his presence of mind and responsible action, Deepak said. Move to hand over Mannapalla Lake to private agency opposed

Mangaluru: Elected members of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) and Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna opposed the proposal to hand over the maintenance of Mannapalla Lake in Manipal to a private agency. Council members recently suggested that the tourist destination should be maintained directly by the CMC, instead of handing it over to a private agency. MLA Suvarna told TOI that he opposed the idea of handing over the lake to private individuals. "There are plans to maintain Mannapalla Lake with the participation of a private entity through the CSR funds. We have no clarity on the plans as to whether it will be just for maintenance or further development of the lake. We opposed the move and told the civic body that at any cost it should not be done. We demanded that the CMC only should take up the responsibility of maintaining the lake. Further, we demanded that the CMC should prepare an action plan to develop the lake as a tourist destination," he said, adding that currently, the lake is managed by the Mannapalla Development Committee . "Besides suggesting a draft master plan for the development of Mannapalla Lake, I also insisted the urban local body seek funds from central govt. However, the responsibility for the maintenance of Mannapalla should be entrusted to the CMC only," he added. During a council meeting held recently, CMC members also raised objections to the move of handing over the maintenance of the lake to private individuals. Ishwara Nagara Ward councillor Kalpana Sudhama emphasised that the Mannapalla Lake's management should be transferred to the CMC. She advocated for the development of conservation strategies and future development plans for the lake, which is spread across 120 acres. She also stressed on the importance of preventing private entities from gaining control, as they would prioritise commercial interests over preservation.
