MP: Collector's order for School Holiday on Shravan Mondays in Ujjain sparks political debate
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 9 (ANI): A political debate has erupted in Madhya Pradesh over an order issued by the Ujjain district administration declaring holidays for schools on Mondays during the month of Shravan, citing the traditional Mahakal Sawari (procession) in the city of Ujjain. Ujjain Collector Raushan Kumar Singh issued the order declaring a holiday for all government and private schools within the limits of Ujjain Municipal Corporation every Monday from July 14 to August 11. To compensate, schools will remain open on the preceding Sundays. 'In view of Lord Mahakaleshwar Sawari during Shravan, All the government and non-government schools within the limits of Ujjain Municipal Corporation area will remain closed on July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 11, every Monday. In lieu of this, the schools will operate as per their scheduled time on July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, and August 10 on every Sunday, respectively,' the order stated. Following the directive, a political war of words broke out between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress. Congress MLA, Arif Masood, criticised the move, saying the collector issued an 'irrelevant order' and only wished to appease the Chief Minister. 'Mahakal's ride has been observed for years and traditionally people welcome it. People belonging to every section of society and religion welcome it. But sadly, the collector issued this irrelevant order and only wanted to please the Chief Minister. It is relevant because the traditional procession is already observed for years, so what is the need for a holiday and running schools on Sundays,' Masood told ANI. 'Additionally, if people of other religions will also raise such a demand, then what will one do? Therefore, the country will operate in accordance with the constitution. Those who talk about one country and one constitution should think about it. This order is not for Mahakal Sawari or the education of children but to please the Chief Minister,' he added. Responding to the criticism, BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma said the Congress was 'unfortunate' and alleged the party was 'busy feeding biryani to terrorists.' 'Parents of Ujjain district must be happy that the school will be closed on Mondays and they will visit to take blessings of Lord Mahakal and participate in the 'Mahakal Sawari'. The Congress is unfortunate, neither they had a fate to behold Lord Ram nor Lord Krishna nor fortunate enough to get blessings of Lord Mahadev. The Congress is only busy feeding biryani to terrorists. Its people are busy sycophanting foreigners. I don't know whether this Congress belongs to China or Pakistan... The Collector has the authority to declare a government holiday based on public needs,' Sharma told ANI. There is a tradition of taking out Baba Mahakal's Sawari (procession) every Monday in the month of Sawan. It is believed that in order to know the condition of the public, Baba Mahakal goes on a tour of the city. The devotees also wait for hours on the roadside to witness the ride and consider themselves blessed by getting a glimpse of Baba Mahakal. (ANI)

Collector's order for school holiday on Shravan Mondays in MP's Ujjain sparks political debate
NEW DELHI: A controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh regarding the Ujjain district administration's decision to declare school holidays on Mondays during the month of Shravan , coinciding with the traditional Mahakal Sawari. The Ujjain Collector has mandated closures for all educational institutions within the Ujjain Municipal Corporation boundaries from July 14 to August 11 on Mondays. The schools will alternatively function on the preceding Sundays to maintain academic schedules. "In view of Lord Mahakaleshwar Sawari during Shravan, all the government and non-government schools within the limits of Ujjain Municipal Corporation area will remain closed on July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 11, every Monday. In lieu of this, the schools will operate as per their scheduled time on July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, and August 10 on every Sunday, respectively," the order stated. This administrative decision has sparked disagreements between the BJP and Congress parties. Congress representative Arif Masood questioned the necessity of the order, suggesting it was merely to gain favour with the Chief Minister, given that the procession has been traditionally observed without requiring school closures. Masood expressed concerns about potential similar demands from other religious groups, emphasising the need to adhere to constitutional principles rather than making decisions to please political leadership. BJP legislator Rameshwar Sharma defended the decision, suggesting it would enable families to participate in the religious proceedings. He criticised the Congress party's stance, questioning their national allegiance and defending the Collector's authority to declare holidays based on public requirements. The Mahakal Sawari, occurring every Monday during the Sawan month, represents a significant tradition where Baba Mahakal is believed to tour the city. Devotees often wait for extended periods to witness this procession, considering it a blessed opportunity.

Schools to close on Mondays during Shravan in Ujjain
Ujjain: Ujjain collector Roshan Kumar Singh on Monday declared holidays for all govt and private schools within Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) limits on Mondays from July 14 to August 13 in view of Lord Mahakal procession taken out during Shravan, one of the holiest and most revered months of Hindu calendar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now . So, the schools will be closed on July 14, 21, 28 and Aug 4 and 11. Sundays before them – July 13, 20, 27 and Aug 3 and 10, will be working days for the schools, the order stated. The decision was made to avoid hassles for school children during the grand processions taken out every Monday during the Shravan and Bhadrapad months of religious significance. District education officer Anand Sharma stated that the decision was made in the interest of children and parents to avoid traffic congestion caused by the procession on Mondays. Starting next Monday, a procession for Lord Mahakaleshwar will be organised as part of the Shravan-Bhadra month. This time, six processions will be taken out beginning July 14, and the final royal procession will be held on Aug 18. On the day of the royal procession, there is a local holiday in Ujjain. During the procession, traffic in the city increases, and for safety and crowd control, police set up barricades on the roads. This causes school vehicles to get caught in the crowd and stuck in traffic jams, the officials feel. To prevent this inconvenience for parents and children, the district education department proposed to the collector to hold school on Sundays instead of Mondays, DEO Sharma said, adding that students and their parents, who use other means to reach school also face difficulties. "This is not being done for the first time; it is being practised for the past two years," Sharma said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This arrangement has drawn flak from working couples. State Employees Union regional secretary Manohar Giri said, "Nowadays, both husband and wife need to work to manage family responsibilities. They have to work and typically get off on Sundays. Also, most employed individuals reside at the district headquarters and within the municipal limits, so operating schools on Sundays will create mental, physical, and financial pressure on working parents. "
