Cabinet approves ₹30,000 crore LPG subsidy to OMCs to ensure affordable cooking gas for middle class: Ashwini Vaishnaw

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved LPG subsidy to oil marketing companies (OMCs) amounting to ₹ 30,000 crore, Union I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The move has been taken to ensure affordable LPG for the middle class amid the current geopolitical situation, Vaishnaw said. 'To ensure that the LPG gas is affordable for the middle class, a subsidy of ₹ 30,000 cr has been present geopolitics, gas prices fluctuate and to take care of that, the subsidy is given,' he said in a briefing after the Cabinet meeting. The compensation will be paid in 12 tranches to state-owned OMCs including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, the Ministry of Petroleum said in a statement on Friday. It said that international LPG prices continue to remain high. 'However, to insulate consumers from fluctuations in international LPG prices, the increase in cost was not passed on to consumers of domestic LPG which led to significant losses for the three OMCs,' it said. The Cabinet further approved a ₹ 12,060 crore support for PM Ujjwala beneficiaries for FY 2025-26, a statement said. This will entail a subsidy of ₹ 300 per cylinder to eligible Ujjwala subscribers and will benefit 10.33 crore households and around 45 crore individuals across India. The Ujjwala Scheme was launched by PM Narendra Modi in 2016. The Cabinet's decision came days after US President Donald Trump doubled US tariffs on India to 50 per cent — the highest in the world — citing its continued purchase of Russian oil. PM Modi had earlier this week, without naming Trump, said that the government will do everything to defend its citizens even if it comes at a personal cost. 'This step also underlines the Government's commitment to protect consumers from volatility in global energy markets while maintaining the financial health of these PSU OMCs. It also reaffirms the objective of ensuring the widespread availability of clean cooking fuel to all consumers of domestic LPG, including those under flagship schemes like PM Ujjwala Yojana,' the petroleum ministry said in its statement.

Think Gas seeks subsidy for D-PNG consumers

Think Gas, along with other compressed natural gas (CNG) providers, has been working with various agencies asking them to encourage the provision of subsidy to domestic piped natural gas (D-PNG) on a par with liquefied petroleum gas. The company has also held meetings with State governments including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Chiradeep Datta, it's COO said that like the subsidy provided to BPL beneficiaries under the Ujjwala Scheme, the government should provide something to CNG as well. In Andhra Pradesh, the company has had talks with government officials and that government was mulling on extending subsidy to D-PNG as well. In Tamil Nadu, they have met the Chief Secretary, he added. The household sector, he said, was not growing as much due to a host of reasons including subsidy. 'Homemakers are hesitating when they hear that this does not have subsidy despite the fact that it is priced 15% lesser than LPG, he explained. The company has tied up with ABB India to provide Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADAvantage) that monitors lines and storage facilities. 'We have provided the latest in SCADA technology to Think Gas. The platform enables centralised price management and billing, and helps in pressure and flow control, explaied G. Balaji, senior vice president and head of energy industries division, ABB India.

LPG Supply: Trouble Ahead As Distributors Threaten Strike If Demands Not Met

The LPG Distributors Association has threatened an indefinite countrywide strike if their demands, including higher commission, are not met in three months The LPG Distributors Association has threatened an indefinite countrywide strike if their demands, including higher commission, are not met in three months. Such a strike would potentially disrupt home delivery of gas cylinders. In a press release following the national convention of the association in Bhopal, its president, BS Sharma, said: 'A proposal has been approved by the members from various states about the charter of demands. We have also written to the Petroleum of National Gas Ministry about the demands of LPG distributors. The present commission being given to LPG distributors is very low and it is not commensurate with the operational cost," he said. As per the letter to the Union government, the commission on LPG distribution should be increased to at least Rs 150. 'LPG supply is based on demand and supply. But oil companies are forcibly sending non-domestic cylinders to distributors without any demand, which is against legal provisions. It should be stopped immediately. There are also problems in the distribution of Ujjwala Scheme LPG cylinders," the letter said. If the demands are not met in three months, then the LPG Distributors Association will go on an indefinite countrywide strike, the letter warned. First Published:
