Dibrugarh: In a breakthrough, Tinsukia police arrested Rupam Asom, the operational commander of the banned militant outfit Ulfa (Independent), from Lekhapani forest in Tinsukia district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border early on Saturday.
Asom, a self-styled brigadier of the insurgent group, was a key figure behind multiple violent attacks, including the killing of Bordumsa Police Station OC Bhaskar Kalita in May 2018. In 2020, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a chargesheet against Asom and six other Ulfa (I) operatives in the Bhaskar Kalita murder case.
Security forces had been pursuing Asom for years. He was known for leading attacks, kidnappings and gunfights against security personnel.
His capture marks a significant victory for the police, who had intensified regional operations over the past few months.
Speaking to media persons, Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav termed his capture as a "big achievement" for security forces.
"Asom's capture is a major success for us. He was involved in numerous criminal activities, including the killing of OC Bhaskar Kalita in 2018. He led multiple attacks on security forces, engaged in gunfights, and carried out abductions," the SP said.

Gurav revealed that for the past four to five months, security agencies were tracking Asom's movements across Arunachal's Namsai and Lohit, as well as border areas of Tinsukia.
"With the help of Arunachal Police, the Army, and the CRPF, we have been conducting continuous operations based on intelligence inputs. Today, our efforts have paid off, and we have finally apprehended him from the Lekhapani forest," he added.
The SP said a firearm and other incriminating materials were recovered from Asom, and search operations are ongoing in the area. "We expect more recoveries and are working to nab other members of his group," Gurav added.
The operation was led by Tinsukia Additional SP (headquarters) Mrinmoy Das, Margherita SDPO and Lekhapani Police Station OC, with support from security forces.
