Dibrugarh: In a breakthrough, Tinsukia police arrested Rupam Asom, the operational commander of the banned militant outfit Ulfa (Independent), from Lekhapani forest in Tinsukia district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border early on Saturday.
Asom, a self-styled brigadier of the insurgent group, was a key figure behind multiple violent attacks, including the killing of Bordumsa Police Station OC Bhaskar Kalita in May 2018. In 2020, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a chargesheet against Asom and six other Ulfa (I) operatives in the Bhaskar Kalita murder case.
Security forces had been pursuing Asom for years. He was known for leading attacks, kidnappings and gunfights against security personnel.
His capture marks a significant victory for the police, who had intensified regional operations over the past few months.
Speaking to media persons, Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav termed his capture as a "big achievement" for security forces.
"Asom's capture is a major success for us. He was involved in numerous criminal activities, including the killing of OC Bhaskar Kalita in 2018. He led multiple attacks on security forces, engaged in gunfights, and carried out abductions," the SP said.

Gurav revealed that for the past four to five months, security agencies were tracking Asom's movements across Arunachal's Namsai and Lohit, as well as border areas of Tinsukia.
"With the help of Arunachal Police, the Army, and the CRPF, we have been conducting continuous operations based on intelligence inputs. Today, our efforts have paid off, and we have finally apprehended him from the Lekhapani forest," he added.
The SP said a firearm and other incriminating materials were recovered from Asom, and search operations are ongoing in the area. "We expect more recoveries and are working to nab other members of his group," Gurav added.
The operation was led by Tinsukia Additional SP (headquarters) Mrinmoy Das, Margherita SDPO and Lekhapani Police Station OC, with support from security forces.

Manhunt underway for 57-year-old Vance Boelter: Minnesota lawmaker, husband killed; second legislator wounded in politically motivated shootings
A 57-year-old man is being sought by authorities in connection with two politically motivated shootings that targeted Minnesota lawmakers early Saturday, killing former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and injuring Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, officials told the Associated Press. Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Vance Boelter, according to two individuals familiar with the investigation. The suspect is accused of posing as a police officer and carrying out coordinated attacks at two homes — one in Brooklyn Park, where Hortman and her spouse were fatally shot, and another in Champlin, where Hoffman and his wife were wounded. Police say the attacker was dressed in a fake police uniform and drove a vehicle designed to resemble a squad car. 'The suspect exploited the trust of our uniforms,' said Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson. 'That betrayal is deeply disturbing.' A fake police SUV found at one scene contained a manifesto that named several lawmakers and officials, including the two victims. 'We immediately made alerts to the state,' Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said, adding that officers were now providing additional security to other potential targets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Governor Tim Walz called the shootings 'targeted political violence,' adding: 'We must all… stand against all forms of political violence. Those responsible for this will be held accountable.' According to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a shelter-in-place order was issued after the attacks. Authorities believe the suspect fled from Hortman's home following an exchange of gunfire with police. Autopsies confirmed that Hortman and her husband died from gunshot wounds. The Hoffmans, though critically injured, were reported to be receiving treatment. In response to the incident, Minnesota's State Patrol urged people to avoid 'No Kings' protests planned across the state, citing precautionary concerns after similar flyers were found in the suspect's vehicle. Organisers have since cancelled all protests. Hundreds of heavily armed police and sheriff's deputies, including SWAT units, were deployed throughout the Minneapolis suburbs, setting up checkpoints and searching for the gunman. President Donald Trump said the FBI would assist in the investigation, promising full prosecution of those involved. 'Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America,' he said. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican, called the killings 'evil,' and asked residents to 'lift up in prayer the victims… and law enforcement personnel.' Hortman was first elected in 2004 and served as House Speaker. Hoffman, in the Senate since 2012, previously served on the Anoka Hennepin School Board. The shootings have raised alarm nationwide as political figures face increased threats. Gabrielle Giffords, a former congresswoman and shooting survivor, said: 'An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself.'

Two cases of attempted murders in 12hrs in city
Nagpur: In two separate incidents within 14 hours, Nagpur witnessed acts of violence that led to the registration of two attempted murder cases. Both cases are being investigated by local police, with one suspect still at large and another in custody. In the early hours of Friday, around 1am, 60-year-old security guard Abdul Rahim Sheikh Hussain, a resident of Sai Baba Nagar in Wathoda, was brutally attacked while on duty under Nandavan police station limits. An unidentified person struck him on the head with a broken shovel containing a sharp metal clip. The motive remains unknown. PI Vinayak Koli said that the victim and the attacker had no known connection — no relationship, no enmity, not even prior acquaintance. "It appears random. Nothing about it adds up," he said. Abdul Rahim remains in critical condition. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for public help, as the suspect remains unidentified. On the same day at around 1.30 pm, a verbal spat between an auto driver and a passenger escalated into violence in front of a restaurant on Quetta Colony Road, Lakadganj. Accused Ashok Mendhe (52) allegedly attacked Nilesh Nagrare (27) with a razor after a confrontation inside the auto. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The victim was seriously injured but is now stable at Mayo Hospital. Choked Mahal Sits On Tinderbox, Complaints, Fines Go Up In Smoke
Nagpur: The civic body's abject failure to act decisively on illegal commercial activities inside residential premises led to Saturday's deadly fire in Mahal, which killed two and left two others injured. Sources said the flat where the blaze erupted was long used as an illegal godown to stock fireworks and electrical material. Despite repeated complaints by residents and several notices by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), no concrete steps were taken to remove the dangerous material. The flat owner, Girish Khatri, who died in the fire, was warned multiple times by civic officials but continued to ignore the orders. Assistant commissioner of Gandhibagh zone, Ganesh Rathod, confirmed that NMC issued multiple notices and even levied a Rs10,000 fine on Khatri in February. "We also imposed a daily penalty of Rs100 until the fine was paid. But he didn't comply and instead moved court," Rathod said. Residents of the building claimed they raised the issue with the civic body about the illegal storage several times, fearing precisely the kind of disaster that eventually struck. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "We filed several complaints, but no action was taken beyond slapping notices," said one resident. The fire, which broke out on the first floor of a G+4 building, led to panic as fireworks began exploding. Fire tenders had to park on the main road and manually carry hoses into the narrow lane where the building stood. "Fortunately, the building was not too deep inside the lane. Had it been located further down the lane, the consequences could have been far worse," a fire department official said. This incident has once again underlined the vulnerability of the Mahal market area, much of which is crammed into old, narrow lanes where access for emergency services is extremely limited. Locals say that several other illegal godowns continue to operate in residential buildings across Mahal, making the entire area a disaster waiting to happen. Central Nagpur MLA Pravin Datke, who visited the incident site, held the civic body accountable for the avoidable tragedy. "Residents repeatedly complained. NMC did issue notices but failed to enforce them. Had timely action been taken, this tragedy could have been avoided," Datke said. This isn't the first such incident in a crowded Nagpur market. In August last year, a fire in a G+2 unauthorized residential-cum-commercial building in Itwari claimed the life of 17-year-old Anushka Bakhade. She died of suffocation after hiding in a bathroom to escape the blaze. Like Mahal, Itwari too is known for narrow lanes and mixed-use structures where residential buildings are used for commercial storage and activities, often illegally. Fire officials then, too, faced immense difficulty accessing the site. The Mahal fire has reignited concerns over the unchecked commercialization of residential properties and the NMC's repeated failure to act with urgency, even after being warned. With many such ticking time bombs in the city's crowded commercial zones, Saturday's tragedy is a chilling reminder of the consequences of civic inaction.
