New Delhi | Guwahati: Precision strikes were carried out on United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) camps in Myanmar , targeting the terrorist outfit's senior leadership sheltering across the border to stay out of the reach of Indian armed forces. Sources said pinpointed attacks were carried out and loitering munitions and drones were used to take down high-value targets. They added the attacks were carried out from a standoff distance. In a statement, Ulfa(I) claimed that three of its senior leadership were killed and 19 others injured after the Indian Army launched an operation across the border. Attack took place between 2 am and 4 am on Sunday." The outfit claimed that there was another attack later in the day on Sunday. It also said that mobile camps of the banned outfit have been severely affected as Indian forces dropped about 150 bombs in the area. In a second statement, the Ulfa (I) said another attack was launched as they were cremating Asom's body, leading to death of two other senior cadres, identified as Ganesh Asom and Pradip Asom. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday asserted that the state police was not involved in the drone attack carried out at Ulfa(I) camps.

1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: In a breakthrough, Tinsukia police arrested Rupam Asom, the operational commander of the banned militant outfit Ulfa (Independent), from Lekhapani forest in Tinsukia district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border early on Saturday. Asom, a self-styled brigadier of the insurgent group, was a key figure behind multiple violent attacks, including the killing of Bordumsa Police Station OC Bhaskar Kalita in May 2018. In 2020, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a chargesheet against Asom and six other Ulfa (I) operatives in the Bhaskar Kalita murder case. Security forces had been pursuing Asom for years. He was known for leading attacks, kidnappings and gunfights against security personnel. His capture marks a significant victory for the police, who had intensified regional operations over the past few months. Speaking to media persons, Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav termed his capture as a "big achievement" for security forces. "Asom's capture is a major success for us. He was involved in numerous criminal activities, including the killing of OC Bhaskar Kalita in 2018. ASOM is an umbrella platform of opposition parties, except alliance president Ajit Kumar Bhuyan and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi alleged that BJP misused govt machinery to ensure victory in many panchayat bodies across the state. They added that BJP used police to weaken opposition candidates and even blackmailed voters by threatening to withhold welfare schemes if votes were not cast in BJP's favour. This, they said, marked a new low in Assam's electoral also accused some BJP leaders and candidates, without taking any names, of importing unethical political practices from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, using money and muscle power to influence the outcome. "By holding the democratic system hostage, BJP has falsely projected an image of widespread popularity in Assam," they stated in the further emphasised that to defeat the anti-democratic, anti-people BJP, there is no alternative but for all BJP and AIUDF-opposing parties in Assam to unite. They argued that whenever BJP secured a sweeping victory in the past, it was due to the fragmentation of opposition votes. Similarly, in this Panchayat election, BJP capitalised on the divided opposition.
